I am trying to plan ahead for ds and clothes. He is 15.5 years old so will he grow much within the next year?

He could grow 1 inch, he could grow 8 inches - puberty makes it pretty hard to judge. I gave up on buying ahead years ago - there was just too much fluctuation! Ds10 never wore a size 8 - went from 6 - 10 in a year. Now he's a 14! :confused3

In my experience with our boys I'd say you should probably count on a lot of growth this year. But everybody's different and there is no one answer. Males typically grow, at least a little bit, until they are 25. Look at it like you would a dog. :p. If his feet are way too big for his body, you're going to spend a lot on clothes this year. :)

It's hard to say, everyone is different. My DS13 went through a HUGE growth spurt at age 12 and has finally slowed down a bit (he's now almost as tall as DH). I can buy shirts ahead of time and be pretty safe but I wait until the last minute for shorts and pants. DS11 on the other hand can wear the same size pants for a year. :confused3

It depends on how much you let him sleep! (or does it?)

I don't know because my son is only 10. But I can tell you when my neighbor's son was 15, the year he was in 10th grade, he grew 5 inches. She was buying him new pants MONTHLY.

That's a very good way to look at it! It's also true that males typically grow until they're about 25, as opposed to females, who typically don't grow much after around 15 or 16.

The year my son was 12, he started out the school year in a boy's size 5-6 shoe. By Easter, he was in a man's size 13. Even his doctor was amazed! We bought new shoes every 2-4 weeks. He was only about 5 foot 3 inches throughout that whole schoolyear. It was both funny and sort of sad. He was awkward and tripped, a LOT, since he really didn't have any time to adjust to the sudden growth of his feet. Thankfully, by the time he graduated from high school, he had grown to be 6 feet tall. Then when he was 22, he grew another 1 & 1/2 inch, making him 6 foot, 1 & 1/2 inch tall now at 23.

That awkward year, he always sort of reminded me of a basset hound!

You can't plan ahead. You just can't. I would just buy him a couple of pairs of jeans and a hoodie and call it good. Then when he outgrows the jeans you can buy him a couple more pair. He probably won't outgrow T-shirts or shorts. (FWIW, my DS17 wears shorts and T-shirts to school year round, even in winter. His school is overheated, and he'd rather be cold until he gets to school instead of hot all day in school.) If he has to dress up, buy what he needs at the time if the last occasion's clothes don't still fit him.

No way to tell.

I was 5'6" when I turned 16.I am now 6' tall. That 6" all came in the span of only 3 months during that year.Legs hurt like crazy, but I was so glad afterward.

Sure didn't expect that at the time.

I hit 6ft at age 14 and never grew another inch.

One of my best friends in high school started Freshman year at 5 feet, graduated at 5' 2". Ran into him a year after high school, he was 5' 11"

So it is different for everyone.

Egads! so true...My DS21 grew over 6 inches when he was 15--so fast it made his legs hurt. I had to buy him new shoes literally once a month. Now he's 6'2" (as of last month) and still growing. He wears a size 13 shoe!

Honestly, I would not even attempt to buy ahead for a boy in his teens. In one year DS grew a good 8 or 9 inches in height. At 15 he was 6'2" with size 14 feet...the only thing that shrunk on him was his waist size. I won't even horrify you with his stats now that he is 16, let's just say he's continued to grow as if we spiked his meals with Miracle Grow. Oh, and its no fun when your kid wears a shoe size that nobody carries...special orders for everything...it really stinks.

.

I was also 6ft at 14 and now 48 and still 6ft. Had size 10 feet then and now.

sadly the pounds have changed 154 to 188, although I have been as high as 210.

My 15 yo and my 17 yo sons both seem to have topped out at 5ft 10, both have size 10 feet. I cant see either of them growing any taller.

My good mate at highschool (titch) was about 5ft 3 aged 18. I met up with him 20 years later on and he had grown to maybe 5ft 7 and had bulkek out his chest, torso and arms with a lot of weight training.

Can't do it with teen boys. My 14yr old is 6ft tall. He did a majority of growing in 7th grade. I thought he was done the orthopedic dr looking at his x-rays a few months ago told me different. His grow plates are still very much open which means he is due to grow at least a little more. You can't plan more then a few months ahead with boys.

Sounds like my DH, 5'4" when he graduated from high school, grew 8" freshman year in college.

DS16 grew 6" last year--we just measured him last week on his birthday. The year before that he grew an inch. Who knows? Last year when he started to grow I bought him 3 pairs of pants and then just replaced as needed. I wouldn't buy anything ahead of time, even shirts, you just don't know. We just bought DS shirts in April, they were big then, they are too small now.

mine grew the most between 16 and 17-and how much is just scary-oldest has worn a size 12 shoe since 8th grade-but he grew a foot between 9th grade and graduation-most of it in his Junior year. Youngest wears a 17 shoe-and his feet grew til his junior year-and hes still getting taller-ugh-oldest is about 6 8-hes 23 and hasnt gotten appreciablely taller since freshman year of college. youngest is 19 =-6 8 and still growing-buying pants and shoes for him is just painful

OP, don't bother trying to predict. My just turned 14 year old has had a massive growth spurt over the last year - about 8 inches. At his well child checkup I asked the doc how much more she thought he'd grow. She had no idea. He's 6'3" now and she said, "eh, could stop at 6'4", may get to be 6'8", there's no way to tell."
