I say that I tip between 15-20%, but really, we usually tip higher these days. If the kids make any mess at all, or if the server goes out of her way to make it easier to dine with children (kids' meal out first, extra napkins, etc.), then we tip extra.

We usually tip at least 20%, especially if we take the children to the restaurant. They are more demanding than we are. Sometimes we like to linger and we'll tip more for taking up the extra time.
i tip 25% or more unless it's already added in, that's my pet peeve. I worked as a waitress and I hated to have the gratuity added, I always did better on my own. as a customer, regardless of the size of my party, i believe the amount to tip is up to me
We tip at least 20%...usually closer to 25%. However, we have 2 kids that are 2 & 3; and while I try to keep them quiet, well behaved and not throw or drop their food...sometimes it's not the prettiest thing a waiter has ever seen I do scan the area before we leave and pick up whatever I can, though. Most waitstaff is very accomodating to us, especially when the kids are with us, and I appreciate it.
How much do you tip when you go out to a table service restaurant? DH and I and everyone we know and dine with tip 15% unless the service is exceptional - then we'll tip more. But I notice a lot of people on here tip a lot more than that. Does it maybe have to do with geographic location?
I was wondering this very same thing. My husband and I normally tip 20%, a little more for better service, or a little less according to the service we receive. We were recently visting my IL's in a small town in NC. At their local seafood rest., I left my usual tip. My IL's (paying for 4, we were paying for 2) only left a couple of $'s. My SIL said the waitress' there (in their town) do not expect to be tipped 15% (or more), she thinks it is a "big city" type thing. Note: we are not from a "big city" by most standards. I was always taught to tip properly from a very young age (I thought it was fun to figure out the tip when I was a kid, my husband still has to ask me what to tip .
As far as I know, the norm here is 15% for average service, 20% for good service and on up as service improves. We tip below 15% for subpar service and nothing for really BAD service. And I don't mean the kitchen being slow or the food being lousy. I'm going only by what the server has control over.
I start at 15%, and then round the "change" (in restaurants O always use a credit card) up to make the total bill end in .00. Exceptional service, I'll go up to 20%.
We usually over tip. Especially if we have good service and a small check. Like breakfast? Breakfast checks are usually small. The two of us can get breakfast for about $10. We over tip in that case. 20% would only be $2 and the waitress has kept our coffee cups full, etc. We over tip in that case.
