How much do you tip your hairdresser?

Tipping is not allowed at my hair salon. No advice for you, sorry.

I tip a large percentage but I have a hairdresser that I've used for 15+ years and she's never raised her prices. Even with tip she's less than most places except for supercuts.

Our family of four (DH, 2 DS's and I) get haircuts every three weeks for $40. Yes, that is $40 total. The only tip I give her is chocolate chip cookies - since that is what she asks for! LOL!

I can't imagine paying what some of you are giving for a haircut. YIKES! We are very happy with what she does and she loves to see us coming because we are not picky. My hair grows so fast, she usually cuts it in a different style every couple of months!

To each their own, but my hair color is what it is. ;)

I have yet to find a hairdresser here... so I walk into different places when I get mine cut and base my service alot off the tip... So I really don't have a def answer! I think i used to tip 15-20 % when I had a regular stylist.

I agree that prices are high. I highlight my own hair now, using stuff from Sally Beauty, and it costs me about $7 each time to do. So I usually go in when I just get a cut and style... saves some money.

I also wax my own brows now. Saves $ too

Today, I paid $40 for a cut & blow dry. I gave her 20% tip, plus she makes commission on the products that I buy. I think that's more than enough.

I must be really cheap because I don't tip my hairdresser nothing. She owns the place and I was always told not to tip the owner. Is that still true? I do tip the shampoo girl though. I only pay $14.00 for a wash, cut and style. Considering what I have read here I am really getting a good deal.

I can't imagine paying what some of you pay either! LOL The girl who does my hair doesn't charge me so I just decide what I want to give her. I always pay her more than I charge myself! (I'm a hairdresser) I wouldn't pay 100.00 for my hair to be done and I certainly would never charge someone more than I would pay.

To the poster who said that she thought you weren't supposed to tip the owner of the salon, you are right.

No one seems to turn the money away but everything I have ever read or been taught about hairdressing says that we, as hairdressers, should not even accept tips. But in reality, we love a tip and a good tipper has been known to get in in a pinch too.

BTW, I report my tips.

I give a $10 tip for a $44 hair cut. That is also so he can give his washer a small tip as well. I do pay a bit for my hair but after the places I have gone and only paid $15-20, and seen the hair I've come out with, this is my indulgence!!!

I paid about $20 for a haircut in Northern California before I moved here last year. Tipped 15-20%.

In Japan? I never tip! But then that's the custom here. You never tip ANYWHERE in Japan. Not at restaurants, not in cabs, nowhere! It's great! Although, their prices are sky high, so the tips are all calculated in already.

I pay 5250 yen for a haircut here. That's right at $50! So, while I don't tip, my haircuts are incredibly expensive on their own here.

It cost 11:00 to cut my hair, I give her 20:00 but she is sexy.

I don't know if you were talking about my $100 ;) , but that is for cut, highlights (2 colors), and wax. She also does the shampooing/head massage and does blowdry and style my hair. :)

I feel very fortunate that I have found someone who knows how to work with my hair type. So I don't mind paying what I do. :)

I color my own hair. My last hairdresser said L'oreal products were the best. He charged me $35 for a 3 minute razor cut. No I didn't tip him. I think his tip is already built into his price. Besides, if I tipped him 20%, (in addition to one more client), he would be making more in 30 minutes than I do teaching a WHOLE DAY!

No wonder all the hairdressers here are driving BMW's and I am driving an old minivan.

Also, do your hairdressers accept credit cards? All the hairdressers here want to be paid by cash or personal check made out to them! I am assuming they are not claiming their entire income.

That burns me when they won't take my credit card.

I have always tipped the same tip whether I just get hilights or hilights/haircut. I have never felt my girl does that great on the cut. I always tip the same amount, so overall its about 15%.

I have been seeing her for about 5 years. but now that I have read all the responses I think I will bump the tip up.

Jenn Lynn, I wasn't directly speaking to you but, in truth, no, I wouldn't spend $100 either. I am not saying it isn't worth 100.00 though. Heck, you are wearing it EVERY day. And I bet it looks great and is done right! It is worth the investment. However, I know what a tube of color costs...

You are right about being fortunate in finding someone who knows what they are doing and does a great job at making you look your best. The girl who cuts my hair is an excellent haircutter and I do feel fortunate. She has cut my hair for 26 years!! I seen some of the best haircutter's in the world over the last 24 years of being in the business. I'd put her up against any one of them! And I have seen and worked with hairdressers who I have wondered how they ever received a license to do hair. So, when you find one that is good, I say pay what you need to to keep him or her. (I'm just lucky that I don't have to pay a lot!! :) )

Oh and Pop Daddy, they always are.;) "Lucky" you.;)

It's about $30 for a shampoo and cut, I tip about 15% and more if I have it at the time. I like her, Pop Daddy would like her too. :teeth:

I usually give a couple of dollars for a $14 cut. I got my hair trimmed the other day and I can't remember if I tipped her or not. The woman spent the whole time she cut my hair complimenting me and my hair and it made me want to get out of there quickly.

I give my hairdresser a $10 tip for a haircut and blow out. The haircut is about $36 and she blows it out as part of the style. I have A LOT of thick hair so it takes her a long time to blow it out straight. I sometimes go for just a blow out and still tip $10, I sometimes wonder if it's too much but since I only really get my haircut twice a year and a blow out alone once in awhile I feel it's worth it.

I don't pay for my haircut or hightlights. (I co-own the salon where I work as a nail tech.) The old saying about not tipping the owner is ridiculous. If the owner is your hairdresser why wouldn't you tip them as you would tip any other stylist?

If you are not happy with the outcome of your haircut or color, by all means don't tip, but most stylist want to make their clients happy. They want to know what they need to do different to keep you as a client.

Many stylist's are self employed and therefore have to pay all expenses, even credit card charges. Many simply choose not to accept credit cards because it is expensive. The machines are costly as well as the percentage each month of the total charges.

Personally, I appreciate any tips, but what really matters to me are my regular clients who show up for their appointment on time and help keep a roof over my family's heads.

That used to be true but I read in one of the advice columns in the paper recently about how that is not true anymore...
