Just curious how much you tip your hair stylists/salon......

I have one person that colors my hair ($200-$250 w/o tip) then I have another who cuts my hair ($95 w/o tip)

I usually try 20% ~ is that toooo much or to little?

Typically I give my stylist about a 30% tip (she just cuts my hair). But this is for a couple of specific reasons: First, I've been with her a long time and she's actually lowered my rate over time as a thank you for the loyalty. So I keep tipping as if she were charging the higher amount. Second, I have difficult hair that's very thick and naturally curly. I've had too many disasterous cuts by people who don't know what to do about it that I tip generously to those who do it well.

Geez, I'm glad I live where I do!!! Haircuts are $15.00 and coloring and perming is $35.00. My hair would be dragging on the ground if I had to pay those prices, or I would do it myself!!

LOL! They have those prices too here in AZ. This is one of my guilty pleasures that I spend money on myself with. I know the prices are high, when you add the 2 together which I always have done.

To me...it's worth the price because they are the absolute best. They are ex-sasoon, employees and for me...worth it everytime, because I never get a bad haircut or color. When I moved to California for a couple of years, I had to find someone new to do my hair. It was an experience I really hate going through. Not to mention it cost me more to have someone correct my hair color; and sometimes usually it still isn't close to what I wanted, was looking for or what worked with my coloring. In California, I found one AWESOME hair salon ~ the owner and his staff would fly to do events, Oscar's, Music Awards, etc. But then I moved back to AZ, and I was back to starting all over again.

At those prices, I would like to know how much you tip your crack dealer?

Wow, you must have beautiful hair! You spend more in one visit than I spend all year. The salon I go to charges $25 for haircuts and I usually give her $5 tip (20%). I only go every 3 months. Total of $120. I color my own hair and usually buy whatever brand is on sale or I have coupons for, usually $7 every month. Total color $84. $200 a year
I think 20% is fine, that's $40-$50 for color and $19 for cut.

I get my hair colored and cut for $90.00 ( she has lowered the price for me) I tip anywhere from $10 - $20, depending on my finances at the time.

I'm glad to see that i'm not the only one who spends on hair....You know my hair stylist said to me one day that people don't mind spending money on shoes but they won't spend the extra for a nice cut that you have to wear daily....But then again i did have someone do my hair because a friend highly recommended her.. I only paid 65.00 for cut, highlights and dye...She did a better job than the one i was forking out all this money to...From my exprience i think it all depends on the person who does your hair and there skills...
I usually tip between 15.00 to 20.00...I also look at the time they put into my hair and there was one time i sat in a salon for more than four hours...And she did a wonderful job...

Ummm...I don't use crack or have a crack dealer. I think that comment was unnecessary.

Some people spend that amount on a month if not more on a round of golf, some go to bars and spend that in a month, some go out to dinner that much and spend that in a month. I personally find getting my hair done just as relaxing as getting a massage. Some buy designer clothes/accessories...some don't. I personally wouldn't pay alot of money to golf, however, friends of mine would pay $200 for an afternoon of golf. It's like being crital of those who stay at a Deluxe resort instead of a value resort.

I think before people judge how much I'm spending on myself, stop and think about your guilty pleasures, because I might necessarily find them appealing. It's something that makes me feel better....so I don't think someone necessarily is on "crack" to enjoy the fine things in life that they work so hard for.

I dont think what you pay for a cut and color is too outrageous. I live in Ga and I pay $150 for highlights and $50 for a cut. I guess you get what you pay for.

I totally agree. You can't put a price on some things, and feeling good about your looks is one of them. IMO.

I have very short hair and I go every four weeks for a trim (it takes her 10 minutes). Regardless of the time, it costs me $27. I giver her $5 tip. I also just gave her $25 for Christmas. She in turn gives me a Christmas card with $5 off my next haircut. She is great and I have been going to her for many years.

I'm so glad someone started this thread....I have inadvertently been tipping my hairdresser about 40%; I honestly wasn't really sure what a good tip was...I 'm glad I can tip a bit less without feeling like I'm being less than generous. Thank-you!!! (after all, those extra $$$ can go to the Disney fund!!! :)

I though I was paying an outrageous amount at $ 97 for color and cut but this thread makes me feel better. I've been going to the same person for about 5 years now and tip her $ 20. I started with the $ 20 when the prices were in the 80's and haven't raised it. I gave her an extra $ 20 for Christmas. I've also given a wedding gift and will probably also give a baby gift (she's pg and due in March)

I live in Mass and pay those prices also, I have two people who do my hair at the same salon. I tip one of them more because the other one owns the salon and her chair rental is up there so I know the employee is paying through the nose. The owner is making her profit.

I pay about $90 for my hair cut too and I tip 20%. On average, I get my hair cut about 4 times a year which means my hair cut will last me about 90 days (3 months). So the $90 hair cut is costing me $1/day roughly. I know people who spend more on a coffee and muffin for breakfast every morning :)

I used to bring all the supplies to make margaritas. And this was after I bought a blender for the salon. That was my "tip". Needless to say, I was good friends with my stylist and the owner of the salon.
