We are jumping into using a teenage babysitter. This will be a regular job, once a week, on a weeknight, from about 5-8pm.

I have 2 kids, almost 1 year old, and 3 years old. She lives 2 doors down, so she will walk home (I'll watch her).

How much should I expect to pay in a metro area in the midwest?

TIA!

I'd give her $30-$35 for her visit for the two kids. If she's good with them and you can trust her you won't want to lose her, good babysitters are so hard to come by! I think she'll be happy with that.

Two boys 8 and 10, I pay our teenage neighbor $5.00 an hour.

In our area.....10,11,12, 13 yr olds get about $5 on average

14, 15, 16 get $6-8

17+ $9+

I live in Indiana and we pay our gal between 10 and 15 for 3hrs-4hrs. I guess that works out to about 4.00/hr huh? It's plenty and she loves us!!!

35 is outrageous.

$20 is my minimum payment. After that, $6.00 an hour for one $8.00 an hour for two. I don't think that giving up an evening would be worth it for less.

But, why not ask her what she charges? That is where I would start with a new sitter.

My DD is 15.................one of the families she babysits for has 2 kids, 7 & 3 and they pay her 5.00 per hour...................she also babysits for another family that has 3 kids, 9, 4 & 1-1/2 and they pay her 7.00 per hour.

Dang! Some of you are paying nearly twice the minimum wage. And that's income tax free!!!

I guess I'll stay in New York. Our property taxes may be high, but at least DH and I can still afford to go out to dinner once in a while! ;)

We have a teenage neighbor girl who charges $5 an hour. I think that's pretty cheap!!

when i babysat for three kids starting at age-2, 4, and 6 and i got 20 dollars for 5 hours. i didnt really think that it was bad until now i have a way better babysitting job that pays more! i get paid 45+ bucks for three kids all under age 6 and thats good for me so im perfectly happy! now they have a baby so i get to watch 4!
:earseek: :earseek:

We have three kids (11 months, two and four yrs old) and we pay $10 per hour. Our sitter is 17 and she drives herself.

We would give $20 for the 3 hour period.

WOW!! $35???

we start at $3/ hour thats if they do nothing but watch our kids, if the house is cleaned up ( the mess they made not what I made lol) they get more. My regular sitters know this and usually do a great job cleaning up after themselves! It works out to be about $5/ hour usually. This is also a little different if they drive here on their own they get a little more if I have to go get them and take themhome Im not quite so generous lol.

We instituted this policy after we left the kids with a sitter and a huge casserole for dinner. When we came home afterwards the casserole was still sitting on the counter ( she hadnt bothered to refirgerate the leftovers ) there was food everywhere, nothing was picked up, and my house that was clean when I left was COMPLETELY trashed!! They had taken out every game in the closet and mixed up all the pieces ( oh that was fun to try to starighten out!) and the kids had not been washed up after dinner  that was the LAST time I ever used that particlar sitter, I was NOT a happy camper!
So anyway, thats how it works here. No one has ever told me what they charge but we never have anyone say no they cant sit so I guess we do ok. ???

We pick our 17yr old sitter up and drive her home. Maybe I would give a little more if we didn't have to do that.

im 19 now, and get between 10-15 dollars an hour for watching 2 kids.....but i work at the day care center that the kids attend, and the parents feel comfortable leaving them with me...

when i was 17, i was still making 8 dollars an hour

im in nj

Thanks everyone! I thought probably $8 a hour. My kids are fairly easy to get along with. She is coming over on Friday to meet the kids and play for a while, so I'll ask her what she usually gets. I know her mom well, and I trust her. She's been busy this summer, so that's why we haven't met.

She's also a lifeguard, so she should be up on her first aid and cpr.

Blueeyes----this is more than you make at the day care?! I teach early childhood education to child care providers at a local community college, many of them also have side jobs with the families they work with if the day care will allow it.

MOM2GRACE---i only make 7.75 at the daycare...that is why i love babysitting on the side :)....i have a steady job that i watch 2 kids (ages 5 and 2) every day after work for 2 hours..i get 100 a week

I'm 17 and watch a little boy who will be 2 in October. Just him, but that's certainly enough for one person. I get $5 an hour. I live just down the road from them, and drive myself, walk or they drive me, depending on whether I have my car or not, the weather, and whether it's dark or not. That's a couple days a week for 2-4 hours at a time.
Last summer I babysat one day a week for 2 boys, aged 8 and 10. They were unbelievably well behaved. I got $35 per day (I'm wiser now) and was there from 8-5:30, some days I was there at 7:30am.
