how much do you leave Mousekeeping?

I'm in the minority but I don't tip Mousekeeping. I understand that they provide a service, but so does everyone who works. We went to Branson last summer and felt completely tipped out. Everyone wanted us to tip them on top of paying for the service/tour/ride. And honestly, I've never heard of tipping housekeeping prior to these boards. But that's just me:-)

I agree with you. I have been an RN for 24 yrs and believe me--I have cleaned up ALOT of nasty stuff!! :-( Most patients these days can't even manage to throw used tissues in the trash can never mind other "messes". Not only do we not get tips (we dont expect any) but probably half the patients these days treat nurses as if we are their personal servant. I realize that my salary is much higher than housekeeping--but I also have a much greater responsibility keeping people alive. I make sure that we keep our room pretty tidy. They basically just have to exchange the used towels--the rest is already done by me. :-). Maybe a 5minute job.

I read it on a Facebook thread posted by a CM :confused3
Just because she accepted it doesn't mean its policy. And I don't blame you for tipping for that mess. :laundy:
I don't see why one would tip at Disney if they don't at other hotels.

People who tip hotel (motel, resort, etc.) room cleaners generally do tip at all such facilities - not just Walt Disney World.

I agree with you 100%. I think this entire tipping for everything has gotten out of hand. People expect to be tipped to perform their jobs, and then there are soooo many jobs out there (like the ones you described) that deserve more money and they get nothing.

My kids love putting money in the fundraiser jars (cancer research, juvenile diabetes etc...) at the grocery store. Last night we were at Subway and my daughter was asking for a dollar to put in the jar, I was getting ready to hand it to her when I realized it was a tip jar. I immediately put it back in my wallet, no way are you getting a tip for doing what you are being paid to do.

Could I ask who you think you're helping by dropping money in those cans? Have you ever researched the recipients to see how legitimate they are? Or to see what (often extremely low) percentage of the funds actually go to assist people with the condition, vs the high percentage that goes to people running the charity? Or whether the name on the canister is identical to the well-know charity vs just being similar?

If you don't want to tip, don't. But please don't think even half that dollar you put in the canister actually helps the victims.

I only tip at wdw. Travel about 80 to 100 days per year. Normally by self and keep room clean so 10 min job at most.

At wdw find when tip get extras my family likes. Animal towels, stuffed animals staged, etc. Makes stay more magical IMO.

$3 per day and $5 on last day. I am happy and they seem happy.

If you read what I wrote, I said my KIDS love to put money in they jars. They feel like they are helping someone or something. They are 7 and 9, do I really want to set them off on the wrong foot by telling them giving is a bad thing to do because all the money doesn't always go where we think it should go?

They also love to donate money to the make a wish foundation at their school all year round, should I make them stop that too because not all of the money goes where you think it should?

We tips $3/day for DH and myself. We do it at WDW, at other hotels for vacation and also when we travel for business (out company will reimburse).

If I had a kid in daycare, I would also tip them. It would not be weekly, but more likely at Christmas or the end of the year.

Our WDW room is only a "10 minute job", as is our room when we travel for work. I do not do it for any reward but to thank.

Make a Wish applies over 72% of donations to program costs. That's pretty good. Some "charities" spend only five or ten percent on program costs. I think their desire to help is great - but if 90% of donations go for administrative costs (especially salaries), that's not helping the intended recipients/research. Don't tip, but at least tipping benefits people in your community.

We tip $5 a day for two people.

Honestly, I don't understand why these threads get heated. If you like to tip, do so. If you don't, then don't.

I tip because I remember my days in waitressing and working other minimal wage jobs. Some customers are pigs and treat workers terribly. Sometimes that little tip or other show of appreciation can help turn a rotten day around.

I'm a nurse too and yes, I've had to clean people up. However, I am compensated very well for what I do, so I get over it.

Am I the only one that leaves the "Do not disturb" sign up the entire trip?

I've never understood housekeeping to be honest. I don't have anyone cleaning my house every day so I don't need anyone cleaning my room.

:thumbsup2you are NOt the only one. I do not vaccum every day or take out the trash every day.

Disney has this big deal about being all about ECO FRIENDLY. and yet they give you a new bar of soap every day? and wash all those towel sthat have been used once?

just sayin'.

I leave the do not disturb sign out every day. and if you knock on my door, disturbing me to make sure I dont' want your service???? not a good idea.
and we tip at the end of our stay

I will tip when I get impeccable service, which to be honest doesn't happen very often. I have checked into too many hotel rooms with stuff left behind on the floor, hair in the bathroom, or stains on the bed. This to me is unacceptable in a 4-5star hotel. I won't tip maid service that couldn't be bothered to do the job right in the first place.

I do however, tip the person who brings me extra towels. I only use towels once at home so I appreciate this service while traveling. I never know if this is person cleaning the room, but I expect not as I almost never get the extra towels I request from the maid.

Maybe she would if I left a tip but that feels more like a bribe to me.

We tend to stay in a DVc villa so I tip $5 on trash and towel day and $20 on the last day. I also tip the luggage guys if in there when they come with our luggage and the bell services guys who deliver our grocery order.

I tip at hotels at Disney and elsewhere, whether traveling for pleasure or business. It is how I was raised.

When we travel on our own, we tip $1 per person per day, sometimes $1-$2 extra if kids made a mess.

When I travel for business, I only tip when the company will allow me to expense it. I have worked for three companies so far, only one will do that.

We tip the skycap at airport $2 a bag.
DME driver $2 a bag.
Bellhop (if there is one) $2 a bag.
Housekeeping $5 a night for two adults.
I already figured out how much our tips will be for services for our upcoming trip and will have it put aside. I just consider it another expense for our vacation.

Restaurants I can't do ahead of time because I don't know how much the bill will be!

I guess I do this because that's how my dad (and brother/sisters)tips and now that's how I tip(money increased as years go by). We are a family of big tippers, be happy if you see us coming to your table at a restaurant or bar! :rotfl:

Since your DD is a housekeeper, you should know to leave a tip every day if you choose to do so. One housekeeper is getting the reward of other people's work on previous days.

I do know but do not wish to deal with it everyday. If the housekeeper that has been with us most days is off, I sometimes give the envelope to the housekeeping manager to deliver to her. My DD also told me they are "pretty good" about making sure not to keep each others tips. There are still a few that are not as honest and pocket the tip. Also, someone else asked how many rooms they have to clean. I believe between 10-16 each. She also said very few people tip.

Does she report her tips to the government? Waitresses have to because they are tipped positions. If they are getting tips they should be reported as income to the government, Disney doesn't because they aren't a tipped position.

If they are getting the amounts listed on here then they are getting a nice tax free addition to their yearly wages.

Haha I hang that sign the entire trip as well only because I usually have clothes or junk lying around and I hate when I accidentally forget to hang the sign to see that they've straightened my stuff! It's embarrassing but I'm on vacation I don't care if I have a few shirts hanging on some chairs. Also a part of me just doesn't want strangers touching my stuff. However I tip about 50% of the time at hotels on the last day this just depends on whether or not I have cash since I don't normally carry cash on me. Then I'll tip $2-5 because I hate cleaning so I appreciate their hard work.

So what? You don't have to tip if you don't want to and that's where it ends. I don't see how what other people do with their tips is any of your business. :confused3

Why would someone tell some anonymous poster on a message board if they are reporting their tips to the IRS? :rotfl:

I am sure she wishes she was getting tipped more than they actually are! They make less than 8.00 per hour and earn every cent of it. As for the IRS, I couldn't say if she is reporting it or not. I assume so.
