How much do you feed your cat each day?

I feel like I'm feeding my kitty McKinley enough - she is a little heavy - about 10-11 pounds - I don't want to feed her too much as she was fat before and then lost weight quickly so she now is recovered from lipidosis - but she acts like she is ALWAYS starving. So how much do you feed?

We have 5 cats--so five cat bowls are filled in the morning and then refilled the next day.

my cat operates a charitable "kitty crunchy soup kitchen" on our front porch (she literaly goes and gets her friends from their yards when i fill the bowl)-so i think she is eating about a couple of handfulls of food per day, but going through at least 3 full bowls per day (she lets her friends eat first, then meows at anyone leaving the house to refill the bowl for her share).

I fill my cat's (Sassy) bowl once a day and she usually has some left the next morning. The only time that I will fill her bowl up more than once is if Jake eats Sassy's food. Usually if she eats all of her food, I will fill it up again because she doesn't really eat that much, but she always has food. Jake is the same way. We fill her bowl once a day and she has enough to last her all day. Jake is very much like a cat in that sense because she will eat a couple bites of her food, then walk away and when she's hungry again, she'll go back and eat some more. My old dog was the same way. I guess since she knows that she will always have food, there is no need to hurry and eat it all. My Grandma's cat, on the other hand gets two full bowls of food a day. She gobbles it up like most dogs do. That cat is the biggest pig in the world. LOL.

heh. I have 5 cats and most weigh between 15 & 26 lbs. The 14 month old kitten weights 8 lbs. Because I work in IT and have such an erratic schedule, I have to free feed. I put down 1 dish in the morning and they all share that.

I don't know how people raise these tiny cats. No matter what I do, I seem to have huge kitties. Fortunately they are all perfectly healthy these days

i take it sassy is the cat? she looks just like mine, is she a bengal? i have 2 romeo and boomer,they are brothers but romeo is the more handsome one and bbomer is kind of lazy and fat and bad-he likes to chew on my coffe table.ugh! one of these days i'll learn to resize my photos so that i can post a pic..lol. getting back to feeding habits, i fill the bowl with dry and give them a half a can of chicken and gravy every day...they are 8 yrs old and i've given them the smae food all the time..the dry is iams original hairball..obviously boomer eats more than romeo.lol. aw: aw:

I have 6 kitties.........I open 2 cans in the morning and divide it and then open 2 more in the evening and divide it again they also have a 20 lb dry food dispenser that they can use anytime......no one here is overweight and they all seem quite content.

well, I wish I could free feed but my McKinley would eat every minute - that's how she got fat in the first place. So I give 1/2 a can in the am mixed with water (b/c it's the only way she'll drink it - she hates water and won't drink it on her own - one of the reasons she got lipidosis); and a 1/2 a can at night and I usually give a handful of dry food as I'm leaving for work. but she still seems like she is starving. the vet seems to think that is fine, but I want to be sure. any thoughts?

My 2 only eat canned food...I'd say that they eat about 6 oz a day each if I had to guess. I feed them 3 times a day, plus a smaller bedtime snack on most days. Canned food has fewer calories, so they need to eat more of it.

Our two cats have a constant supply of dry food, and once a day they each get a bowl of wet food. We have no weight problems with our cats. Our female weighs 9lbs, and the male 11lbs.

Yeah, Sassy is my kitty. Guess I should have said that in my post. LOL. I have no clue what she is. She is just my little tabby cat. I know what its like to have a cat that destroys everything. Sassy totally tore apart the sides of our old couch and now she's starting at my bed. She scratches my box spring at like 3 in the morning every morning. Can't be mad at her right now, though. She is sleeping on my bed like a little angel. LOL.

I feed my cat about a half a cup of dry each day. That is the recommended amount of food for her weight indicated on the bag. I do notice that she (and my others before they died) eat more in the winter. Perhaps your kitty is eating more to keep warm during the colder weather? aw:

My three get dry food in the morning (sharing one big bowl). Out of all the healthier dry food I tried they decided to all agree on Purina One Chicken and Rice. Toward evening they split a can of Friskies (anything with gravy) and they get a bedtime snack (just a handful) of the "bad" dry food, Whiskas chicken flavor. One of them is so addicted to this, she refuses anything else and actually threw a tantrum when I tried another brand. I love the cat haters who say cats have no personalities. Fooey!

We just have dry out all the time and one small can of wet every other day. Sophie drinks water from her bowl, the toilet(yep!) and the tub if I let it drip. She's a tiny thing. I've never had a cat that needed to lose weight but I've known plenty that did. I would find that hard as I'm used to keeping dry food out all the time.
