How much did your car insurance go up by adding a teen driver?

We have 2 cars/3 drivers, we put the Honda CRV as DD's primary car because it was $1200 a year vs $2100 for the Toyota Hybrid Camry. Insurance agent said Hybrids fall into some catagory where it is more expensive as well as trucks and sports cars. Once DD gets her own car she will be insured with that car. Keeping her with temps (since she doesn't have a car yet) for an additional year saved us $$$. 4 of her close friends have had accidents (one girl has had two in the 8 mos she's had her license, the most responsible one)within the first 6 mos of getting their license, so it kind of slowed down her wanting hers so bad.

DS would've doubled mine so my agent told me to get him a car that was 8-10 years old with liability and glass and it only raised mine by $800/yr (2001 VW Jetta)

None, because we never added them. They had their own vehicles and jobs to pay for their insurance. Driving is a privilege and if they wanted to drive they needed to work for it. Taught money management, responsibility, priorities etc...

Glad there are others that felt the same as us! It was no surprise to our DD or DS as that was something that was always going to be that way and they were actually thankful for it.

They felt so proud of their own vehicles knowing that it was 'theirs', but in our names - total trust between us. They now have teens of their own and are teaching them the same ethics as we taught them.

Our DGD just loves her vehicle and told us she is so happy to 'own' it and not have it handed to her - quite the little gal for 17! (only DGD, and we are not proud of her at all ;)

I priced out our two newer vehicles with our then current carrier Allstate and for our dd with drivers ed and good student discount was going to go up $1900 a year for full coverage! Priced it out with Nationwide and our insurance actually went down! So my advise is to get quotes from other sources. My Allstate guy who we have had for 15 years couldn't even come close. I like him but not $1900 a year! Good luck!

FWIW, I never said we were buying him a car but we can't simply "hide" the fact that there's another licensed driver at our house.
Also having parents buy their kid a car doesn't make them spoiled. My parents bought me a car which then gave me the freedom to work to pay for college. I worked 25+ hours per week and graduated with $0 in student loans. My parents only contribution was $400 for books for one semester. We also paid for our own wedding & honeymoon to Ireland.
I don't see how that would make a spoiled princess.

I was talking to a Geico agent today and asked if it would help if we had ds take a defensive driving course. He told me since dh & I are the primary drivers it would be a bigger discount if we took one. AAA has an online course for just $35.00. The discount is applied for 3 years.
Just saying in case anyone wants to help lower their insurance.

We've been looking at our friends rates and can't believe the costs. The older sedan cars are far less then suv's. But we know only 1 kid that is less than $100/mo. Most are 175/300 a month more.

I am wondering is this just high S Fla rates or what?

My DS(18 in March) isn't pushing for his license and a car but it seems to be coming up a lot more often. We always told him we will get the first car and they can pay for ins, gas...

We have 2 explorers, 2003 and 2007 , high credit, no points or accidents on our lic, and when we inquired o add him a few months back, progressive was going to go from $1200(Progressive) for 6 mo to way more than double. That just seems wrong but our agent said they'll all be that way. I am not so sure.

Time to look for new ins I think.

Our son (who turned 18 in Oct) drives a 97 Maxima. His insurance is less than $1000 a year.

ETA When I asked dh to call the insurance agent, she said we were under the "old" Allstate. We are now under the "new" and have the Gold policy and our insurance went down about $230 a month.

I was told our insurance would go up $1,200 a year. However, I forgot to ask agent what the cost would be if DD was on her own policy. DH wants to know because we might put her on her own because of liability issue if she is on our policy.

I don't know if this is true everywhere but here in CA when we checked into this, we were told that even if our son had his own policy, we could still be held liable unless we could prove that he was financially independent (proof of his own income and that he was paying rent, etc).

So as long as we supported him, we kept him on a policy that was covered under our umbrella policy.

Just paid ours, 3 drivers, 2 in 40's, one son 18, 4 cars, had all 4 before his license. Was a little over 1400 year. Him added, driving a 18 year old Toyota Camry 3800 year. all have good driving records.

ours initially went up about $50 per month which was much lower than it would have had we not had dd wait until she turned 19 to get her license (she also qualified for good student based on her gpa, and she did the safe driver on-line program for the insurance company which was free). this was with 3 drivers in the home and 2 cars (2006 escape/2008 explorer).

funny thing is we decided to buy a new vehicle a couple of months ago (2014 escape) and sell our existing escape to dd (she's making payments so it's not yet in her name)-and when the insurance company added the new vehicle it kicked in a multi-car discount that kept the premiums very close to what they already were.

Get quotes from other agencies also...
Originally a USAA diehard member...
HO rates went up with no claims a few years back to almost double over 3 year period....
Shopped around and went with ALLSTATE...stayed there for two years when DS#1 got license and rates went up but not horrible
Last summer when DS#2 got license I started shopping around....know to keep HO and Auto together if possible. Found State Farm was a lot less for same coverage than any reputable companies. We switched in July....boys did the Safe Driver course thru state farm...good student discount, etc. We have 4 cars and 4 drivers insured....

When my oldest DD was about to get her license 2 years ago, my agent told us that if we put her on our policy, our insurance would go up by $1900 (in our state insurance doesn't go up while she had her permit). Our agent strongly recommended she go and get her own insurance because being on ours would be a huge risk if she were to get any violations. So between good student discounts, AAA discounts an additional discount for paying the premium upfront each year etc., she was able to get her own insurance for just under $1500/year. The deal in our house was simple in that before she could drive, she had to get a part-time job. We would give her our old car which was a 2003 Pontiac Vibe and pay for the first year's premium but she would be responsible for paying her insurance each year after that. We have had to chip in when she's been short as she does go to college full time and can't always work the same amount of hours BUT she's frugal with her money and does a good job saving as much as she can.

I am jealous of the cheap rates so many Diser's have. Here in NM we pay up the wazoo due to having close to the highest rates of DUI and uninsured drivers in the nation. We pay $2900 per year for a 2010 Toyota Corolla, a 2003 Toyota Tacoma (both full coverage), and a 1999 Honda Civic with only liability and comprehensive (no collision). When we added DD 2 years ago, our insurance went up $88 a month. We already had a 3rd car on the policy before DD started driving.

We are taking advantage of every discount possible, we have been at-fault accident free for over 10 years (We've had 2 parking lot accidents that weren't our faults and did not claim because the other drivers had to pay), and have close to the highest credit ratings possible. We carried 300,000/300,000 coverage, but had to drop it to 100,000/200,000 at our last 6 month renewal because the rates went up another $150 every 6 months for no reason other than the reason being the insurance statistics of the state we live in. I've shopped around and did find a slightly cheaper rate, but have been reluctant to switch because we have an accident forgiveness on our policy right now due to our excellent driving records.

DS will take driver's Ed this summer. I am dreading the cost of adding him to our policy because we will have to add a 4th car for him since DD will be taking her car to college (which will also increase the premiums).

We were told the same thing. Not in CA though. State Farm was quite a bit cheaper on the auto, but with the home owner policy added (they give a discount) it was a wash. Our homeowners on 2 properties plus an umbrella policy on with the autos and we get a better discount staying with our old insurance which offers a good student discount and you only have to have a 3.0 average! But they consider that a good student so it's 10% less!
