We're having our two kittens (1 male, 1 female) done on Monday and I'm curious if what our vet charges is the norm. TIA!

I've always taken my pets to the SPCA to have them fixed... much much cheaper & some months (during spay/neuter promotions) they have a discount.

The vet near me charges $200 per animal -- too much for me, so I go to a place that does it further away.

With the huge problem we have in our area of stray cats it's too bad that the city/vets don't offer more facilities with economical options.

Ours were free. Of course, the DW IS a veterinarian. She usually charges around $75 - $100 / animal.

Of course, remember that is surgery that would cost about 10 - 15 grand if it were a person.

Low - cost clinics are a good alternative, but please do your homework. My DW is continually encountering spays & neuters that were done poorly by the "economical" clinics. Cost a lot of $$ to fix. More in the long run.

Our vet does it for $25. They are great. I have been taking my animals to them for at least 5 years.

We went through Spay Today and it cost $90 for one female, one male and that included rabies shots.

Can I ask how you know if the spay was done poorly? I am a bit concerned about the amount of weight my cat put on after being spayed in January. I expected her to gain some weight, but not a much as she did. Could this be a problem from the spay?

My vet wanted about $135 for our male cat, so we tool him to the Humane Society for it, it cost about $50 there, I think!

I use the low-cost spay/neuter program and pay $25 - 50 (depending on the size of the cat or dog). The shots are added at $5 each.

We've never had a problem. Currently, I have 12 cats and 4 dogs (and that doesn't count the ones who have gone on), and while we love our vets, I just couldn't afford the regular vet fee for spaying/neutering.

Our Cat was $20.00

Female Dog $25.00 + $10.00 Rabbies (sp?) shot
Male Dog $25.00 + $10.00 Rabbies shot.

I used the low cost one with my male cat as well. It costs me 25 bucks. Normally vets will charge more mine wanted 80 dollars!

I didn't have a problem with the low cost clinic my cat was a little groogy when we picked him up from the medication but the next morning he was as good as new!

They also offer very discounted and sometimes free options to those families around here who can't afford to get there pets spayed or neutered.

Yeah, wow. The quote our vet gave us for 2 cats was nearly $900. Of course, that was with all sorts of reccommended extras (including microchipping which they already have done  )

We got our cats from the shelter and got a spay neuter certificate, which this vet accepts, which just covers cost of the actual cut. It doesn't cover IV fluids during surgery, antibiotics, pain meds, or anesthesia :confused3 Yeah, let's clip them w/o anesthesia. Of course, the shelter never told us that none of that stuff was covered, so we feel pretty mislead.

With just the basics, for two cats, including the use of the certificate to cover the actual cut, it's going to cost us about $250 total for both of them. We're kind of stuck because the procedure has to be performed by May 1 (Monday, which is when it's being performed) or we can get a citation, so we really don't have the option of finding another vet.

We're not digging this vet either. It's a practice and the first time we went there, we saw a woman who we liked, last time and today we got a male doc who really didn't seem to have his act together. We're going to request the female vet from now on, and only make appointments when she's working or we're going to change vets all together after the surgery is done.

Thanks for all your input!

ETA: DH and I should have done our research. The Orlando SPCA will do them for $20 and $30 respectively. Live and learn. :guilty: These are our first pets and we just moved to the area so we picked a vet close to where we live since we don't know our way around that well yet.

I paid 150 a few years back..I got the laser neutering because it is supposed to be less painful and I got kitty morphene

It cost us 410 for our male cat.
That was over 16 years ago.
He is 17 now and still very healthy.
He does take more naps now but so do I . :lmao:

Good Luck!

I would still go with the Orlando SPCA, as for the citation just tell them you have an appt and it will be done by May 15th, I would think that would satisfy them if you can prove that you have an appt. I for one believe this is one service (spay/neuter) that should be a reasonable cost for everyone, in the long run it saves lifes and makes for healtier animals, I do realize that vets have a huge amt. of overhead and they had lots of schooling, but IMO spaying and neutering should be done at a reasonable fee.

Holy mackeral!!! No wonder my boss can't afford a new clinic! We charge $88 for a female spay (cat) and $65 for a male cat.
We do recommend bloodwork before surgery and that is $28 per animal.

$900? Wow! I still can't get over that!

ok..breath...still $900? I would never get another pet.

Luckily, with mine, the boss cuts us a break. I also get vet care at cost.
That is why we have 1 dog and 5 cats.

My puppy Princess was just spayed this past Monday and the total was $104. She was 'in heat' though so that cost extra. My cat was neutered last year at a cost of $50.
