How much are you paying for braces?

Anyone had to get braces for anyone other than their kids? My DH is going to be going to a consultation soon for his mouth. He should have had braces as a teenager but his mother didn't care enough about his oral health to take care of it. Our dental insurance doesn't cover orthodontia after you're 18. I'm not looking forward to the estimate! :sad2:

My two children overlapped for one year with both them in braces. The total cost for the two was $11K. (DS more complicated, DD less and a sibling discount).

We had 3 payment options for the balance after insurance. One offered a 5% discount if payed in full at the beginning. Another was 12 months of equal payments with no interest and the third was 24 mo. of payments but with interest.

I think it's common for most orthodontists to offer some payment plans.

We are at the beginning of the braces journey for DS (12). His cost $5500 without discount...but we paid in full last week, so we got a good discount (paid $4800). He needs an expander for about a year first, then the braces will be put on.

Our dental insurance didn't cover any orthodontics, so we paid for it all out of our HSA (health savings account).

I was so sad writing that check, thinking of what a great Disney vacation we could have on that money.

ETA: Our ortho did a consult as well as molds to better assess the situation and give us a more detailed idea of what we could expect with treatment. I also made sure we did consultations with at least three ortho's, and I picked the one that was board certified, as well as having a *wonderful* office staff and dental assistants.

The cost is going to vary greatly depending on what kind of treatment your child needs. My DS's braces cost $5000, and he has been in his retainer (removable upper and cemented lower) for the last year and a half. His treatment plan covered one retainer and all his follow up (in fact, he has a retainer appointment next month). I had dental insurance which paid $1000 toward the cost. I got a 5% discount for paying the remainder in cash, which is what I did. I also pretaxed the amount I had to pay, reducing the cost further.

So far my DS loves his braces. Gets to pick the colors and all that jazz. Anyway he made a comment about how he didn't think it cost too much for his braces. I looked at him and said "honey, I love you very much and getting you teeth straightened out is worth every penny, however to put it in perspective you have a trip to Disney in your mouth!" He realized that it wasn't inexpensive for us to have him treated at the orthodontist. I think since he has never seen me actually pay while at the ortho he thought it was free or something!

DD's braces cost $6400. This is top and bottom braces, 18-24 months, plus headgear for about 6 mo. The price covers all of this, plus any emergencies, etc that come up during this time, plus her first set of retainers. She didn't need anything pulled, had nothing unusual.

We got a 5% discount for paying up front. We put it on our air miles card (tried to use Discover to get a % cashback, but they don't take Discover ). We paid it off immediately with Flex Spending $$ we had put aside for that year (we knew more than a year in advance that this was coming up). Then our insurance reimbursed us their portion ($2000) with a small payment every month for a year. While it did take some saving and planning, it is nice to walk into that office for appointments and not worry about whether I have the check book or whether I have enough money that month for the payment!!

Based on a few folks I have talked to, the $6400 is high for just "standard" treatment, but we didn't shop around much and didn't know this in advance. Good for you for shopping around!.......................P

Just took my 8 yr old for her consult.....for Phase 1 it's $1950 (palate expander.) Her braces are about 2 years out. I suspect that will be at least another $4K. Our insurance pays $750.

But I also had braces an adult to correct a gap in my two front teeth at age 27. Paid $2000 for tops only out of pocket, and was worth every penny. It gave me so much more confidence and I smile without worry now. So $6K for my daughter is worth it.

2 kids $8000. I was able to negotiate a little bit and did get a 5% discount for paying up front on top of that.

We paid $6,000.00 about five years ago. We were on the high end because his teeth were headed in a major bad direction with being crooked, and jaw alignment issues. It all worked out though. Perfect teeth after the braces. Last week DS had his wisdom teeth pulled. If he didn't get them pulled all that orthodontist work would have been worthless because his wisdom teeth were going to mess up all the other teeth if allowed to grow in. Good luck.:thumbsup2

Ours were $5000 (I got a professional discount of 35% on that plus $1500 insurance so we were lucky). It sounds like thats about right. A lot depends on your location as well. Don't cut costs by seeing a general dentist, stick to an orthodontist. Most give free consultations and interest free payment plans. It's a pretty smile for a lifetime!

My estimate for invisalign was $6000. My insurance will cover half of orthodontia up to $2500, so my out of pocket isn't too bad.

I used to work as an Orthodontic Office Manager for years before becoming a SAHM. Check your dental coverage for orthodontic coverage. Some have an age limit and some do not. Also, if you have to have any oral surgery done also check your medical insurance as that sometimes qualifies as additional coverage.

I would be very careful regarding choosing any doctor who is significantly below the average cost in your area. There will be some more expensive than others but on a whole you should get a ballpark average after a few consultations. Bad orthodontic work can not only painful but costly to fix. My best bit of advise is to have several consultations with a few doctors recommended by friends or your DDS and CHECK YOUR INSURANCE for maximums, deductibles, wait periods, age limits, etc. It is in your best interests to go in knowledgeable and not to expect the doctor office to have the exact answers. In the end it is you responsible for the bill and I don't know about you but I don't like surprises.

our total for dd is $3400. we pay half of that since our insurance pays out $2500 total lifetime orthodontics. She is in phase one for her cross bite and only has 4 braces on top with a distal jet appliance. Her total in them will be one year which will end next March. She will then go into a retainer I believe and if she needs phase two it will be for straightening only and even shorter of time and less money is what he told me..

I also am in braces and looking at $5300 total and my insurance paid 50% of that.. I have clear on top and metal on the bottom. I need to have a tooth extracted to give me 5mm more space so I have proper facial symmetry. that is covered 100% under our dental insurance. Im supposed to be in braces for 20-24 months.. I have noticed a dramatic change already and its been 7 months.. best thing I ever did at age 41.. and here I thought I would be getting a breast lift and I ended up in braces. lol..

we put money down and have auto pay for our monthly payments. it comes to right about $250 per month for both of us.

DS has had braces for 2yrs and 5 months, he gets them off two weeks from today :cool1:
We paid around $5600 total, including all x-rays, exams, the quad (aka expander) and the retainer, everything. The insurance only pays at the end of the treatment and we had to have the same dental plan as when we started or the insurance couldn't be applied (that was the rule for us anyway). We paid about $1200 down and then monthly payments after that. Our payments were through the orthodontist's office, so there was no type of interest, it was dollar for dollar. We weren't offered anything by paying up front, so we made a couple of payments and then paid it in full. It seems as if $5-6k is about the going price.

Our insurance didn't provide a cap in the pricing. My kids both needed braces and both were done in 2 phases. The youngest was just discharged last Friday! When all was said and done, each of my children have a $10,000 smile. $2000 for each of them was covered by insurance, the rest was payments OOP. They are nice and set up a fair payment plan at my orthodontist. I felt like we should have had some formal separation agreement though, since I have been going there since DS was in Kindergarten--he is a senior now:lmao:.

I've got a great orthodontist and got a steal at $3800
2.25 yrs and 4 teeth pulled (covered under dental 100%).

I paid $4655 for braces. It would be $4900 if not paid up front, but the ortho does have 0 interest finance option available. Probably $500 for extractions and $80 for the x-ray and impression.

$3465 each for 3 kids in Phase 1 right now. Paid off kid #1 and started #2 & #3. #4 will start treatment at the end of the year to put as much into 2010 as possible. Our insurance covers $1500 lifetime. I may need to get a job with dental to cover Phase 2 on 5 kids.

We had various issues- crossbite, over bite, little mouths- none requiring a palate expander or extractions.

We got a larger than usual discount on #2, #3, and #4. They usally have a flat rate sibling discount of $250- we got 10% :woohoo:

We are paying monthly, after a deposit of (I think) 10%. When we took our quads in, they were very willing to work with us on payment, extending it twice as long as typical. We also just have it hit our credit card each month, so we get cashback bonus too. It's like an add'l 1% discount. There is no finance charge to do it this way.

We LOVE the docs and the office staff. We do not pay for lost/broken brackets. It's all included. My DS also had some gum tissue lasered off when a tooth just wasn't erupting. No charge. Doc said it actually saves them money, as treatment was stalled until the tooth came down enough for a bracket to be put on.

We did not get 2nd opinions on our quads, but had 3 on our DS. ALL agreed that treatment was needed ASAP and for the same reason, but they all offered different treatment plans. The one we chose said they could do it without expanders or extractions. One ortho wanted to extract and another wanted to expand. We have been very pleased with the progress without such invasive measures.

There are lot of orthos in our area. All offer complimentary consultations and will provide digital photos and a digital panorama xray. Some also offer extras, so know what you are paying for. Common extras- points for good brushing and care accumulate and earn gift cards like Blockbuster, etc. Ours and a couple others give you a free photo session with a photographer when your smile is complete. You get to keep the photo after they are finished displaying it in their office. Free coffee and a parent room with power cords, etc so you can work while your kid is being seen- it's always empty, except for an occasional cell phone convo. Video games for the kids to play while waiting.

The best thing is the staff is AWESOME. You can tell that it's a positive work environment. Heck, I'd consider being a receptionist, especially for the dental plan:thumbsup2. They have patient party each year. The first one was a screening of HSM3 on Saturday AM of opening weekend. DH walked up with DS and no less than 3 people called DS by name. DH had never been in the office and this impressed the heck out of him. This practice is HUGE and has 2 locations. My DS had only been in treatment for 3 months.

It's worth shopping around for a good fit.

My parents were the same - in their minds, no one "needed" braces. It was just a "want". I had teeth growing in places they were never meant to be, and my parents laughed off the idea of braces - I had to live with my crooked crowded teeth, the decision was made and I simply had to accept that. They weren't paying. To this day they still shrug it off - was never their responsibility.

The sad reality is that a set of crooked ugly teeth is a social liability that could very well limit employability. That's what happened to me. As an adult, I had to spend ALL my savings to get braces, just so I can be employable. Every boss wants to see that winning smile in an interview. When I should have been starting to save for retirement, instead I used every cent I had just for braces. I needed surgery and 3 and a half years of braces, for around $9000. I was lucky it was that cheap (they were talking about a major jaw surgery costing $50,000!! ) but I managed to avoid that. I was lucky I saved up enough money at my minimum wage job, since I couldn't land a good job with benefits.

But like others said here - braces were the best thing I ever did. Having a nice smile and straight teeth changed my entire face, changed my whole identity and how others perceived me, and opened up a world of employment. Nice teeth simply are a necessity for suceeding today in America, and I am so glad I finally have that asset. :)

My dental through the company pays 85% for braces, I think we had to come up with $1200 and dental paid the rest.:thumbsup2
