I was loading a few dishes in the dishwasher moments ago, when I looked at the bottom and noticed something looked off. I touched the bottom and my suspicions were correct, there was a good amount of standing water in the bottom. Oh dear.

So I took the dishes out (luckily there were only a few) and took things apart. I used a sponge to remove the visable water from the bottom, and then got inquizative and started takign things apart (the arm, the circular thing at the bottom -- I know so technical, and some other stuff, only to reveal that where the dishwasher drain, there was another good 3-4 inches of water underneath all of that. Sigh.

This is waaaay beyond to fix myself, so I guess I'll be calling a plumber tomorrow to fix. Might as well get him to look at the garbage disposal too(hasn't worked since we moved in in July and we never use it anyway).

So any guesstamites of what we'll be charged?

In our old house we never had a dishwasher, so I'm used to washing dishes by hand, sigh, but I so liked the convienence.

Turns out it was a blocked drain line coming in to the garbage disposal. Also, I accidently knocked a screw in the garbage disposal when the painters took down switch plates when they painted back in July. The screw, jammed up the disposal, but there was somethign blocking the drain line. Woot! Two things fixed in one call.

We had a similar situation with our dishwasher. It turned out to be a switch of some sort, and I don't remember it being all that much at all. Our dishwasher is a lower end model that is about 8 years old, so we would have just replaced it if it was too much. We used an appliance repair place though, not a plumber. Hope yours turns out to be relatively inexpensive, too!

My dishwasher did that a couple months ago, then it started backing up a few inches in the sink while it was running. My dh cleaned out the sink trap and the dw was fixed.

If your garbage disposal doesn't work properly, it might just be a blocked drain line. Try taking all that stuff off again and pouring some baking soda and boiling water down the dishwasher drain. My Mom used to have this problem. ;)

I just went back and did this. Didn't work. Just added more water sitting in the bottom.

The garbage disposal turned on when we first moved in and then stopped. A few weeks ago the side of the sink that has the GD was drainign slowly, but I got out the plunger and fixed that. I also fogure it is also due to my mesh strainers that sit in the sink. They get clogged with food/grease. If I take out the strainers and run water int he sink, the sink drains just fine.

ETA: Dishwasher is about 7 years old. Was installed when the house was built. But I will say that the people who lived here before us, left the kitchen FILTHY. I cannot even describe the mess we found under the fridge and stove when we moved in. Surprisingly the bathrooms were cleaner than the kitchen.

I was going to suggest the same thing. We had this happen a few times with our dishwasher.

We also had a gasket thing fixed once that was easily fixed by us if we had known what it was.

Our 15 year old dishwasher finally died in May. We were planning on redoing the kitchen in the next couple years and didn't want to spend a lot on the dishwasher because we didn't know what we would get for the rest of our appliances. We found one that was actually really highly rated in Consumer Reports at Sears for $265. It cleans the dishes very well, doesn't dry worth a darn so we just let the dishes air dry. We have noticed a drop in our electric bill as a result too :lmao:. It has a LOT of room in there too. I really like it.
