We are in the talking stages of getting into DVC we are tossing around so many scenario's.. I see that resale goes from $86 to $98 per point.. I think we really only need either 50 or 100 points so we may just buy from a resale place because of that. We like to go every second year and this way we can bank the points and do that. It saves the initial cost of it as well.. AND we can always add on if needed later.
My Questions are
  • Is there a current promotion that would make buying from Disney better in the long run?
  • What closing costs in involved in a resale company?

  • Is there a site that lists all answers to these and any other questions?
    I have seen the official Disney site but it does get into specifics just call for more information.

  • What is the cost to buy from Disney directly?

Current promotion from Disney is between 8 and 10 dollars of per point depending on resort.

The closing costs will vary based on the number of points you buy. For 150/160 points it will be around $500.

I've looked at so many sites but for specific questions try the DVC boards on here, they are very helpful.

Disney has a $200 closing cost. Plus, if you are outside of Ontario you have to be in Florida to purchase (or even talk about purchasing) from Disney.

We bought into DVC last June and purchased a 50 point contract at HHI. It was actually or second attempt as we lost a 50 point OKW contract to ROFR a month before. We have already done three add on contracts to that original 50 point contract and just sold the original contract for more then we bought it for and we used two years points though we did lose the commision and the 10% tax on foriegn owners but the contract served its purpose for us and we just wanted to have the extra years on the contract and we really like AKV. The current prices are as per the following from one of Doc's threads and are good till June 4, 2007 I believe:

For new purchases (minimum purchase of 160 pts.)

AKV = $104 - $8 incentive = $96
SSR = $104 - $10 incentive = $94

OKW, HH and VB = $92
BWV = $98
VWL = $98
BCV = $101

As for closing costs, the 50 point contract we just sold has a closing cost of $450.00 so it would be around that area for 50 to 100 points.

Any other questions just ask, and all I can say is that we love our DVC.

The DVC boards on here have a great FAQ section.

Oh, this is so tempting... All this talk about DVC makes me want to buy in -- and I've only been to WDW once and didn't have time to take the DVC tour. It sounds like a good investment, as well as a great home away from home. Tempted. Very tempted. Except I should probably focus on getting a home here before buying DVC... I just wish Toronto condo/house prices were better!

Definately not an investment. Only something you should buy if you would spend the money anyway.
It is hard to avoid the emotional pull though.

Too true about the emotional attachment. It was so tough leaving Disney World at the end of my trip even though I knew immediately that I would be back -- again and again, I was sure. There really is something magical about being there... must be the water, or the pixie-dusted air!

I was thinking more along the lines of an investment toward my future holidays. Being a solo traveler, accommodations are always the priciest part of any holiday for me, and having a home (that's already paid for) to go to when I arrive would be so convenient -- and make the trips easier on the pocketbook. But getting the home in TO makes the most sense for me first, then I'll worry about a second place to call home.

In the meantime, I can dream... and I can keep visiting Disney. I really should look into renting DVC points for my next trip since I've heard that it can be more affordable, and I might just be able to stay in a resort that I wouldn't normally be able to afford at the rack/season rates.

We purchased 160 points for AKV while we were in WDW last week. We did not finance so our closing costs were in the range of $235 USD. We made an appointment to see a DVC salesperson before we went down. After the tour and Q & A session and 2 days of discussion between ourselves we called back and went through with the purchase while we were there. The Disney folks were very friendly and helpful. Made spending a large pile of money quite easy actually.:rotfl2:

We used Timeshare Store and found them to be very efficient and excellent. Wanted to go visit them on my trip a few weeks ago but did not have their address handy. Being a Canadian - I was really nervous dealing with a third party but they were amazing.
We ended up saving money buying from them instead of buying dircetly from Disney.

Care - sounds like you are being smart about it. Knowing what you want is half the battle.
Renting points is probably a good idea. It would be nice if we had a place on this board where Canadians could rent from each other to avoid having to get money over the border (and save on exchange fees).

I thought AK was only $101 per point, minus $8.00 if you are a member??

Holy Smokes!! I should have investigated this while I was there!! I have always understood that there is a min buy in of around 15K-20K - is this the case? And once you buy your points, aren't you then paying a monthly fee to keep them?

We go every year - usually 2 weeks but sometimes just 1 week. We do at least 5 days of Disney each year so it is a 5K trip for us Min every year.

Should I be looking into this?

Minimum buy in direct from Disney is currently about $101/point minimum 160 points. There are many resale options which are a lot smaller. Even less than 100 point contracts. And yes you do pay annual maintenance fees of approx $4/point depending on your home resort.

Can some Canadian DVC owners share experience how they finance their inital purchase? Is there a FAQ for canadian regarding DVC anywhere? I don't know where to start.

We used our LOC. Disney's interest was 10.5 or 11%. Plus we bought when the exchange rate was at it's near record high. Didn't want to deal with fluctuating exchange rates or their high interest rate.

I'm using my line of credit as well. You can finance through the company you buy from but their interest rates are a lot higher than ours. Some have reported using their credit cards but you can only do that if you go through Disney directly.
