How Many Trips do you Take?

Just thinking here.....

We usually take about 2 major trips per year, along with several weekend getaways, etc. This year we went to Disney in April, 5 nts, then a "biggie" to Hawaii--18 days! Well, the Hawaii trip was exceptional, we usually don't do trips to that extent, but hey--you only live once! Actually, the Hawaii trip was a budgeter's masterpiece--the whole trip came to right about $3000! That included everything--airfare, hotels, rent car, food, sightseeing, everything! We made good use of ff miles, AMEX reward miles, got great deals on accomodations, etc. However, even $3000 is a chunk of change.

Now we're looking at our budget, Braces, college savings, new car, all that is adding up so we decided no more traveling for at least a few years. Well, I'm going through "travel withdrawl". I never realized how much I enjoy not only traveling, but planning a trip. It was a sort of hobby of mine--researching a destination, ferreting out the best deals, reading up on the history (read Hawaii 3x's!). so now I'm at loose ends--I've lost my hobby!

Just wondering how many trips the rest of you take, about how much you spend, etc? Of course, we all have to plan around our own circumstances, not benchmark ourselves by others. Still, would like to know how we measure up. Maybe we could continue to travel, just keep costs down a little (well, I do that anyways!), or more frequent, shorter trips. I still feel the traveling is beneficial to my kids, opens up other worlds, broadens their horizions, all that good stuff. Also, we connect more as a family while on trips as opposed to just day-to-day routines. I can't see just never traveling again. We already put aside $500/month for college, which is not nearly enough for twins who will hit college, obviously, at the same time. Also, dd needs braces. Well, just rambling here, would like to know how often the rest of you travel, about how much you spend, etc.

In the past we have taken larger family trips every two years or so during slow seasons. Things will likely change as our older daughter is entering first grade and the younger is in an Early Childhood program with several therapies. We are now forced to either join other parents tied to school schedules or break the rules and take trips during the school year. (That is an unresolved issue...). We also do weekend trips to places like Wisconsin Dells as well as spending time at our lakehouse (not as posh as it sounds :) ) and visiting family. My husband travels a lot for work, and very occasionally when he is out of town his schedule allows for a day off. I have joined him for our anniversary and when we only had one kiddo I took her to see Daddy in FL and Nashville. (much harder to do with two!) I agree that providing your children with experiences is more valuable than providing your children with stuff! Real life sometimes jumps in the way, though. We, too, have a new car and college plans and most likely braces coming our way. As for expenses, I realize that my kids don't give a hoot if we stay at a four star or a Motel 666 so we try to find something that will excite them without breaking the bank. My rule of thumb is that if I can't save for it or pay it off in three months, we won't do. Usually that means no more than $2000 to $3000 total for the big trips and $200-$500 for the weekenders.

I also love the challenge of finding the travel bargains. I totally agree that it is like a hobby. Vacation or not and I'm on the computer checking out prices and hotels.

We took 2 major trips last year as well. The first was 10 days at WDW for my eldest daughter's dance convention/ MMD performance. Grand total $5000. The second was for eldest daughter's 16th birthday and for our wedding anniversary. We did a 7 night all inclusive in the Dominican Republic. Grand total $3200. Add those together and I start to feel sick  Just to make it even better/worse (depending on how you look at it) the trips were only 6 months apart.

Actually this is not the norm for us. We knew about 10 months in advance of the WDW trip that we would be going so we had that time to save the money. The second trip we only planned about 2 months out because DD had a week off after her exams at school. I would say that normally we take a big trip every 18 months and lots of weekends away in between. We are lucky that we have friends with lake cottages and a kid that dances competitively (dance requires weekend trips).

Unfortunately, there won't be a family holiday for us until next summer at the earliest due to my DH changing companies. I am hopeful that I will be able to take the kids for either a short trip to the carribean or a short WDW trip this winter but if it happens it will be totally bargain basement. If neither of those trips pan out then I'm crossing my fingers(and toes) for free dinning next August. I think that would be the only way I can talk DH into another trip so soon. :thumbsup2

vhoffman, where do you live? I also enjoy planning for trips, reading and researching, ect. Sounds like you got some great deals in Hawaii, however, my dh could never in a million years get a chunk of time off like that, so our trips are generally much less extravagant! We usually do 2 or 3 week long trips per year. We have only done shorter trips once or twice, we have pets we have to board and such so the shorter amount of time does not seem worth it. We almost always drive, one day drives are best but 2 day drives are doable (those trips are usually a little more like 8 or 9 days.) We go to WDW once every year or so. I find that lots of people, however, never get around to seeing all of the cool stuff that is closer to them. Some places we have enjoyed...Colonial Williamsburg, Branson, the Smokey Mountains, San Antonio, Philly, Hershey Pa, St. Louis, ect. Our next trips will be Hot Springs, Ak in the fall, WDW in Decemeber, and Sedona, Arizona next spring. Get out a map and see what you can do that is closer/cheaper. I know all about frequent flyer miles and hotel points (we recently did an entire week in San Antonio on Marriot points!) but maybe you could stretch them to get more out of them. We have 4 kids so I know all about the expenses involved, our next WDW trip we are camping to save $$$$.

We've been to Disney 4 times in the past 2 years.
We usually go for 8 nights/9 days.
Love it!!!

Ok, this is part of our retirement planning--put every single expense on AMEX to get the points. Of course, pay it off to to incurr finance charges (yes, I know AMEX doesn't have interest IF you pay it off, but more times than we care to admit we've "rolled" the balance over onto the Optima account). Then, when we retire (hopefully AMEX points will continue not to expire), then we will have many, many points to travel with! So, sounds like a plan :rotfl2:

Actually, we do have a retirement plan, the 401k ,IRA, all maxed out, etc. Just planning for leisure as well. Well, hey, sounds a little goofy, but why not? AMEX our way to travel in our retirement! Just have to not use those points in the meantime!

It depends on the year. This past year we have been to Florida 3 x's a record for us. We usually go to WDW and US/IOA once a year and then do some weekend trips to the beach or fairly nearby attractions. I know last year we spent 12,000 on trips but that was unusually high. My Dh is like you, he loves planning a trip and finding deals! He even helps other people. We just got back from WDW in April and last night he was doing a budget for next April or May and then a Disney cruise the May after that. I think we probably should take a year or so off but I doubt we will, we make good money and life is short. I would like a kitchen remodel but I bet I visit the mouse instead.

It depends. Every year I have been back home to Hawaii and I used to go anywhere from 2 weeks to a month as it helps to have family there. ;) My family and I also take short weekend trips or during holiday breaks along the East Coast. WDW trips every so often or just to Florida to visit family.

Now my focus will be traveling internationally. Next year I hope to go to New Zealand.

We are planning to take one 'big' trip every two years or so; on the off-years we will just do a weekend trip or something small like that.
January will be our first trip to Disney and I told DH that I'd like to go back in two years. It takes us a while to save up because I'm a SAHM and student, so we're a one-income family.

Never enough.

When I was playing Paintball I traveled 4 times a year just for that 4-10 days per trip all over ( WWoS sometimes twice a year)

Then we did 1 big week Vac. and many 2 to 4 day trips to the beach or camping.

Now that I'm not playing we want to do 3 to 4 trips just to Disney each year . With the few beach trips thrown in. DVC will help but I will still try to get aN AP rate and some SW Dings for a quick trip.

I'm the planner and bargin hunter Dw just goes along and enjoys.

I also have more time off then DW so DD & I take some trips without her.

OP i am like you it a hobby for me too. we are going to build a house hopefully starting this fall and I told dh no more vac. for two years. I don't know what I will do. :sad2: without trip planning.

Normally, not that many, LOL! But between 9/30/05 and 9/30/06 we'll have made 3 trips to WDW. Our first started last Sept 30 (9 days), we took one in May (6 days) and are taking one more 9/24-30. We decided that we would all celebrate our birthdays at Disney! (Dh and dd celebrated theirs during the 05 trip, ds in May, and me this Sept.)

We will start saving for DVC after this coming trip! :sunny:

We travel a lot! We keep finding new, great places to visit and want to return. We did Disney in March/May for family trips. We're headed to the family cottage in upstate NY for 2 weeks on Sunday. We also do a LOT of little week-end trips: Lakeside, OH; Niagra-on-the Lake, Ontario; Boca Raton (for a wedding

Then there are the work trips that are also good excuses for fun: NYC (for DH's work), Hawaii (for my work)

....and always, family visits to Iowa for holidays! They are vacations too!

Most week-end trips are less than 300.00 or so. The lake is free and so are the work trips (lodging and transportation). The family cottage...and "home for the holidays" are also freebies!

When I lived at home, we would take two big trips a year and about 6 weekend trips a year.

So far in college, I've taken 3 nice vacations. Thats about to double in this upcoming year alone though (finally figured out that whole budgetting money thing)

I'm exciting about my trip to Africa though, even if it is for school work. 1 week in south africa, 7 weeks in Namibia including an 8 day safari with some school project thrown in. Could it be any better?

My husband and I travel quite a bit now that our kids are in their 20s. My husband has to travel for his job all the time, and when he goes someplace interesting, I try and go along. In the past 2 years we've been to California (my home state), Alaska, Florida (3 times, different places,) Chicago, New York City (multiple trips), British Columbia (Multiple trips - Vancouver, Lake Louise, Banff, Calgary), New Brunswick, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Washington, DC, Maryland, and I can't remember where else.

When the trip is job related for my husband, I can tag along for free except air fare and a lot of those have been covered by frequent flyer tickets.

We, especially me, love to travel. So far this year we've gone to Disney for five nights, I went to Scottsdale with girlfriends for five nights, we went to Northern Michigan for four nights over Memorial Day, DH and I went to Vail, CO for five nights in July and I'm going to Vegas in September with girlfriends.

I always like to have something to look forward to. We are going back to Disney in January. :teeth:

:moped: disney every 3 years, Chicago every fall, and in the middle of winter travel for dd12 figure skating competition's.

We usually go to Disney 4 times a year with 3 of those being 5 day trips, and one of them 8 or more days.

I've been thinking though that I might try just doing 2 longer trips..can't really decide! It's so hard to pick a favorite time to go!

I was thinking of doing two 12 day trips, and alternating..one year Summer (StarWars Weekends) and Winter (MVMCP), and the next year Spring (Easter) and Fall (MNSSHP). :confused3

We also go to Disney's Hilton Head resort for a long weekend every September, and Gatlinburg,TN for 5 days every January.

We split the cost of the HH trip with my parents, and then the Gatlinburg trip is staying in their condo..so that helps! :thumbsup2
