How Many Points would I need?

Hi. Usually post on Trip Planning, but am in the middle of research for if it's worth buying into the DVC.
If we wanted to go to WDW every other year and stay in a deluxe hotel (e.g Contempory) for 2 weeks (as apposed to the "timeshare" accomodation) how many points would we need to buy? How much more for 3 weeks?
And, if anyone knows, what rough price are we talking?

Hi Kevin,

It will not be cheaper for you to buy DVC if you use the points to stay at Deluxe WDW accommodation that is NOT DVC. It will almost always be cheaper for you to just pay cash for the rooms you want.

Is there a particular reason you don't fancy the DVC resorts? The ones we have stayed at are lovely - we have tried out studios which are basically the same as a hotel room but with a mini kitchen (fridge and microwave). The "price" to stay at these if you pay in points is far cheaper than using DVC points for non DVC accommodation.

One thing I will say is that there are rumpours (which to be fair have been around for years) that they are building a DVC at the Contemporary which might suit you down to the ground

On the points calculator, the Cont, Poly and GF are all listed as points value...

Roughly working out one trip every two years, would work out needing around 300 points... (as a two week trip would be around 600 points, so I could bank one year and so on....) so somewhere around £15,000 ????? Rough guess???

Other questions .....

1. Park tickets - but another thread answered this one?
2. What is the maintenance fee? Is it expensive?
3. Can you add disney magic plan or meal programmes?
4. Is their consierge at DVC resorts.

Yes £15,000 for 300 points sounds about right I think. Depending on whether you bought resale or direct from Disney etc.

The cost of annual dues varies from resort to resort but $4 a point is a useful benchmarking figure so on a 300 point DVC you will be paying about $1200 per year. If you are going to be travelling every other year, this would be $2400 every two years and I guess what you need to ask yourself is, would this $2400 pay for my accommodation at WDW anyway?? Then you could save yourself £15,000 DVC upfront LOL.

Not sure about the magic or meal plans as I have never wanted to do this myself, sorry!

Concierge - I am not aware that there is concierge at the DVC specific resorts? I know that for example at the Wilderness Lodge there is conceirge but not at the DVC part of it (as far as I know? Anyone else know?)

You are right - there is no concierge service available at the DVC resorts.

Kevin - we have looked into DVC numerous times, but decided that it wouldn't work for us at this moment in time. Like you, we want to stay predominantly at the Magic Kingdom deluxe resorts (well, the Polynesian!) and the DVC points costs here just isn't worth it compared to paying and using an AA or annual pass discount.

I have also read about the possible DVC expansion at the Contemporary (actually, I think I read it was definitely going ahead now). When this is constructed we might re-consider. I figured we could still spend a few days at The Polynesian before/after our stay at a DVC resort - especially the Contemporary as it is so close
