How many points to purchase at Riviera?

I’m so sad that we missed out on that $188 per point price. We must have literally *just* missed it. We were at WDW January 22-27 staying at CBR right next door to RIV. We didn’t have time to tour as it was such a short trip :(. We started chatting with DVC as soon as we got back. That lower price point might certainly make our decision much easier :(

Amazing that it worked out for you and thanks for sharing. Good luck! Sounds like you’re so close.

Yeah, the price went to $195 on Jan 28! But it's not a huge difference if that's the home resort you want?

Im not the OP, but I have also been considering purchasing direct. I want the freedom to stay not only at the L 14 resorts, but also at any new ones that come on board. That would be my primary reason for purchasing direct.

I'm not sure why you would buy direct at all unless you would get value from a blue card or love RIV that much or want a fixed week.

For two people, I'm not even sure the blue card math works, unless you are golfing every day or something, and the blue card discounts can be eliminated at any time.

We do like it and also we like the Skyliner and we wanted to be able to do the member cruises, etc. We might also have kids later on... Also, staying at any new resorts that they build is a plus for us. Our original plan was to buy a small amount of points direct and get more through resale later, probably SSR, for when we want to bring parents/siblings/friends (I know I can't use the SSR points at Riviera).

If California goes like everyone thinks it will, it will be just as booked solid as a VGC. If that's what you want, I would wait and buy there.

And there's no promise that future resorts will be in this system at all. With the way Disney is going with the lock downs, I can easily see a DVC+ that doesn't play nicely with the O14.

Here's my thoughts. First, I think that you'll get the standard studio and the tower room periodically when booking at 11 months (probably the January trips) - it may just not be consistently over the life of the contract. But doing so even periodically will give you leeway for the preferred studios trip years that you may have to book perhaps more frequently. So in that case 125 points would probably work out to be fine. Perhaps even the 100 because of the resale you're also looking at. Since you're also planning on resale somewhere else then either you are going to plan more trips a year or it's just to have something less expensive for other options? With that resale you'll have other possibilities to thru into the mix and since Riviera isn't the only location you want to stay it's not as critical to buy extra especially if it's a stretch that starts adding to the overall cost because of any finance charges you'd end up with.

Now of course something about having these points and having the room "already paid for" often leads to going more often. If that's likely to be the case and you really think you'll love Riviera more than any other place then the 150 points now may be the best.

Yes, I think you're right about the smaller contract being better so that it's not a stretch. Hm...

I own and have been able to book SV studios and tower studios so far. While we won’t know how difficult it will be once the resort is sold out, I do think that right at 11 months, if you can book at 8 am, should yield you pretty good results right now based on when you travel,

During those times, though, PV studios should not be difficult at all so adding on a few more points would be good to cover that. Right now, for 2021, a PV studio is only 3 points more per night than SV. So, if you were forced to book a PV, over 5 nights, it’s only 15 more points.

In terms of more RIV or wait to do more at SSR, I think you have to decide how often you want to stay elsewhere and will you need 200 points. If owning 150 is enough, then having them all at RIV gives you the flexibility to stay everywhere. Remember, the 100 SSR won’t help you with your stays at RIV.

Good luck.

Started looking into adding more points to our CCV Home resort, but at $220 per point and a minimum add-on of 50pts, we could not justify it, which led us to looking into Riviera which was much more cost effective and would allow us with dual home resorts - one in the magic kingdom area, the other at Epcot/HS area.

We started at 75pts....then 100pts.... and finally landed on 125pts. We stretched a bit further now then having to later add-on for more money altogether because the minimum you could add is 50pts.

Thanks everyone for the useful advice. I've decided that 125 will suit us well by giving us more flexibility while not stretching us now like 150 pts would. Will look at having a 2nd home resort near MK or simply buying SSR resale later on, but for now I just informed my DVC guide and she's writing up the DRR contract. We already have a reservation for a week at a Riviera deluxe studio in early December (booked as a guide hold for now). Excited!

I’m so excited for you. Congratulations!!

Thanks so much! I hope things work out for you!!!

PS: it might be worth calling DVC and asking if they might let you have at older $188 pp--maybe say you saw that advertised during a previous visit and that you talked to some DVC people... they seemed very flexible with me, so might be worth a try!

Congratulations! Not to throw something else into the mix, but you may want to ask about splitting it into 2 smaller contracts - 1 for 50 points and 1 for 75 points but still get whatever incentives you're entitled to at 125 in total. It's a bit of a crapshoot right now how resale prices are going to be on Riviera and while I've only been a DVC owner for a couple of years, it does seem like smaller contracts are more desirable in the resale market.

That's a great idea if they'll do it! Do you think they'd do it, though? I don't know if it's possible because the minimum purchase is for 100 points (I'm a new member). Also, thanks!

I would think that as long as you're buying the minimum in total that they won't be concerned with how you buy them, but probably doesn't hurt to ask your guide. Again, congrats - super excited for you!

If they'll do it there will be additional closing costs. I think 125 points is a small enough contract that reselling it should not be an issue at all if the need ever arose. Because of the 100 point minimum for membership extras I wouldn't have a division that would mean you couldn't sell one and keep one and still have the benefits. But 100 points and 25 points really wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Your closing costs would be at least a few hundred more to do contract and since the minimum for any member buying RIV is 50, you’d only be allowed to do 50 and 75.

As already mentioned, that means if you did sell, you’d lose benefits and then Be required to meet whatever minimum is in place at the time.

Well, never mind then! Thanks for the tip, I thought the minimum was 75.

Thought of this as well, but as others have mentioned you will lose the member benefits if you ever had to resell one contract and the added closing costs for splitting the contracts would offset much if all of the higher asking price of a smaller contract. I would do it though if the split contracts were at least 100pt each.
