How many points do you have? We are thinking about adding on but are unsure about the amount that we need.

PlutoFan3,

It all depends how often you want to vacation, how much you can afford, etc. We started with 230 at OKW back in early 1999. We added on 70 more there to give us 300 pts the first year.
Then we decided we wanted 1 off-site DVC so we added on sight unseen 110 pts at VB in January. But after going there we fell in love with VB (and the Beach Cottages). So we added on 90 more pts last week to give us 200 pts at VB and the 11 month booking window at VB.We didn't have to finance so it wasn't that bad for us.We also like to go on a DVC vacation at least 2- 3 times a year. We are kind of spoiled and prefer the 1BR or larger.
With banking and borrowing available, I would recommend whatever amount of points you can afford in your budget.
Both of our contracts (OKW-300 VB-200) have the same use yr so that makes it easier for keeping track of our pts and banking deadlines.
We are both 46 now and planning on using DVC for many years, but also we have 2 kids(DS 28+DD16), who will be able to have a DVC contract each down the road.:)

I think every DVC member you talk to will give you a different scenario. Your need will be based strictly on your ability to travel, when and how often and what you can afford. We started out with 230 at OKW in 1997. In 1999, we added our name on a waiting list with The Timeshare Store for an add-on matching our use year. After a few months they called with a 40 point add-on, we jumped at the chance. Not too long after that, OKW offered add-ons to current members from inventory they had accumulated, we bought 70 more. We have never had a problem using all of our points. In fact, we usually run out of points before we ever have to consider banking. If we could afford it, we'd buy a new contract at BCV. I think 600 points sounds like a nice round number to shoot for!

Thank you so much for your replies. Does anybody know the current prices and which resorts are open?

The current price is $80/pp. I believe that there is a MB offer of $5/point at BCV, and $15/point at Vero Beach, making the prices, with MB, $75/pp BCV and $65/pp Vero. Keep in mind that you have to give your first years points back to DVD in order to take advantage of MB, so it's not necessarily a great deal.

Oh, BTW in response to your original question: We started with 200 points, and added 100 a month later. We've talked about adding at DI, and dh said that if they ever open up an AK DVC, we'll be camped out waiting to buy more points!

My motto is always one can never have too many DVC points, LOL!!

I am very tempted by the Beach Club Villas I must say. Having walked through there last month, they certainly are in a great location, and it is a beautiful resort too.

To answer your question, I started with 270 OKW points, then added 200 Vero Beach points, and then added another 200 at BWV. The variety gives me opportunity for 11 month booking at several resorts and several vacations throughout the year. Good luck with your decision! :)

We started with 222 at BWV a couple years back and have yet to add on (although I have finally gotten my DW to consider it. We'll be there in a month and will use it as an opportunity to review our needs (and wants).

It will be interesting whether we do an add on at another resort (for example we are staying at OKW because it seems like a quieter resort), or if we will try to wait list for BWV points....interesting issues for which I will continue to scan these boards for some help with answers.

Overall though, I love DVC and, given unlimited money would hoard points like a chipmonk hoards acorns :)

We started out in 2000 with 150 pts at OKW because truthfully, we didn't know what we were getting into (even though we sat thru the tour) and it was all we could afford. Actually, I was afraid we couldn't afford it and decided like we do all our big expenditures, ;) if they approve our credit, we'll manage it ;) LOL
Well, we have managed it and after taking our 1st vacation in 2 bedroom, we decided we have GOT to have more points! So we bought a 220 pt OKW resell from the Timeshare Store. So we have a total of 370 pts. You'll never be able to buy pts based on what you "want" or "need" only on what you can afford. Like new_yawka, there can never be enough pts for me.

We bought 250 points at BCV this past spring and are going home for the first time at the end of September. I've already borrowed points from next year - so I'm guessing we'll be adding on eventually. We want to pay off our 250 points first though.

I don't think there's such a thing as too many points, so buy what your budget allows and add on as you can afford it.

230 in '92, 200 more during our first trip when we realized that we were going to need a Grand Villa every year.

232 at OKW bought in March of this year and then we added on 70 at BCV a couple of months later. I would like about 100 more but feel fortunate that I got dh to go along with the points we purchased. :D I also am comfortable with my dues for the points we have.

We started with a 200 point resale at BWV and added on 100 VB points through Disney.

We are about to close on a 262 BCV contract today.

I asked this question a few weeks ago and was astounded by how many points some people have. I thought maybe they are plants by DVC.:)

Good luck with your decision.

I think it's true, you'll get a different answer from everyone because everyone's "needs" are so different. We got 270 at BWV in 1998, and until this year, felt it was enough. We figured on taking family with us every other year, so we'd have enough for 2 2 bdrms. This year, our "guest" list got really long, especially after my FIL passed away. Suddenly, we needed more points than we could borrow with our current contract, and so DH was very supportive of getting another 270 at BCV. We've already figured out how we'll be using the points thru 2005, but I think we have enough for awhile.

Started with 175 BWV points 2 years ago, then added on 50 more there, and recently 25 more there for a total of 250 at BWV. Also bought 125 at BCV this spring, so the grand total is 375. I'm pretty sure I'm done buying, but I never say never! ;)

We JUST bought in March and I bought 150 points, cuz we usually just go down for 10-11 days in either January or September and we only need a studio.........

.......for now!;)
