How many photos do you take? Memory ?

I've been seeing lots of great ideas for photos by reviewing all these great photo threads and wonder how many photos you guys all take. On my last trip (with 3 small children) I took about 750 photos. I have a Sony 7mp camera and currently have about 3 1/2 gb of memory. I used less than 3 gb on my last trip but can't wait to get back to Disney and try out all these new angles I've been seeing. I'm also going without kids (more photos!) and to the Flower Fest for the first time.

I see that Office Max has a Lexar 1GB stick for $39.99 after a $40 rebate. I'm thinking I should do that to be safe but was wondering if I should just buy some sort of hard drive storage device to put my photos on. I do not have a laptop and wouldn't want to take one on vacation with me. I know I can transfer photos to a CD at Disney but don't know if I would really trust that they were on the CD.

What do you guys do?

The HDD storage device is much too expensive. For the cheapest (but reliable) version of it, you'll be able to buy at least 4 Gb high-end media. So why even bother.

I was just in WDW last week, and used a Delkin Picture pad with a 30 gig hard drive to dump my cards each night, it's a nice little unit that allows viewing the pics and will also connect to a tv to run a slide show on the tv,

I liked having all my cards available, just in case I went crazy taking pictures....

I had a 2 gig lexar 80x card,

a 1 gig lexar 40x card

and my 4 gig hitachi microdrive..

I shot primarily with the 2 gig, then the 1 gig, saving the 4 gig for back up, since it has the slowest write speed and will lock me up when shooting fast sequences...

We took our laptop with us and saved our photos to it every night, then deleted them from our memory cards. On our way home, the hard drive on our laptop crashed!!! We were fortunate enough to find some software to recover the photos that we lost! We had to hook up the laptop drive to our PC when we got home and run the recovery software. We were able to get them all back.

When we go back, we will save the photos to our hard drive, but we will also burn them to a CD before we delete them from our memory cards.

We carry 2 cameras, one is a 5 megapixel and the other is an 8 megapixel. We will have a 2 Gig compact flash for the 8 megapixel and 1 Gig and 256 mg SD cards for the 5 megapixel. We take oodles of photos, about 200 per day!

So why even bother.

Well, my only thought was that it is more universal. So if I do continue to hang out here on the photography board and end up purchasing a digital SLR I would be investing in something that could be used on a non Sony camera. Where my memory sticks are just for Sony products.

So glad you were able to recover your photos. You must have had a few fearfull hours.

My adult only trip in May is only 3 nights so I think I'll just buy another 1gb stick and see how that goes. I have a 4 night trip planned with my DD for later May and a 7/8 night trip planned for Aug. Who knows how low the price of memory will go by May. I remember being pleased last Oct that the price of the 1gb stick was under $100 now I can get it for under $50.

2. an OTG device (preferably USB 2.0 version , there is one made by Sima Corp)
3. a slim (laptop) 2.5" HDD

This way you won't have any chance of your card reader being obsolete (if it does, all you need to do is to exchange the card reader (about $20) instead the entire thing (usually US$300).

We take the vast majority of our pictures with my D70, but we have a pocket size Canon digital too (can't remember the model number at the moment). We use that when we don't want to lug around the Nikon. I have a 1 gig card, and that has been plenty of storage for us on vacation (at WDW and elsewhere), but I do review the shots we've taken and delete bad ones once or twice a day. It holds at least 300 pictures at the highest jpeg setting, so that's about what we come home with. We have a couple of smaller cards for the Canon.

hmmm 300 is an average day for me.. I took over 700 at my nieces wedding last June, and 500 of a friend during an afternoon photo shoot..

Wow! What do you do with all of those? I wouldn't even be able to find time to review them! I would be completely overwhelmed.

I find time by not sleeping...LOL, I spend hours each night going thru my pics, dumping some, editing some, and just playing with others creating alternate reality shots..

On my last trip to disney, took 1238 Pictures with my kodak digital...filled one 512, and just started on a 1gb...

+ got 152 photopass pics on the cd, which was fabulous.

After my hard drive crashed 3 years ago and I lost 6 months worth of pictures (approx 250 pics, mostly of DS during his learning to walk age) I never delete pictures from my media card until they are backed up on at least 1 CD.

I recently got a DVD burner for my current computer and now will back up my pics on both CD and DVD. I was able to get some pics of that time period that I lost from my sister and mother and I had a few of the better ones printed out, but it still sucks that I lost all those pics.

As for how many at WDW,,, last trip I took about 500 digital and about 80 film, plus about an hour and a half of video.

If DW and I go again in June for the weekend without the kids, I think I may end up taking more than that. I'll be photo crazy for the weekend. I may need to get 2 or 3 more 1 gig cards.

When I started to read your post, I was about to agree with you

until I got to the third line.

I guess I must just take a lot of pictures, I have averaged about 1,200 over each of my last couple trips. Even my very young daughters are taking about 500 each, with their own cameras and they each have 512MB cards. This trip I am planning a new strategy, tag all the pictures I like as protected and then get rid of the ones I don't want or didn't come out right while I am there on a daily basis (or while waiting in one of the many lines). I am heading down with 4 GB and my Canon 20D (should fill it quickly), and am still trying to decide if I should pick up another gig or two. Because if you need more memory there, it will really cost you unless you go off the 'resort'.

I was toying with the idea of picking up something to store them on instead of another card...but I am sure my wife would kill me at this point if I bought one more gadget. At this point the UPS driver and I are back on a first name basis.

I have 4 1 gig cards. I am kind of scared to buy the 2 gig. Heaven forbid something happen, I would have lost twice the amount of photos vs a 1 gig going belly up. :x

I had a 1 gig lexar card. POC card... come to find out they do not like Canon 20d cameras I still need to find a place to send it in to try and recover my photos from Disneyland. 582 photos A life time trip with my mom.
I am not even sure who to send them in to. When I try and even have my computer read the card it freezes the second it gets put in the drive.

let's see we have 1 512 mb memory card and took almost 4000 pictures. we got a 20 gigabyte memory holder and used about 3.5 gigs worth of pictures. this year maybe we'll take more. i figure we will take at least 2000 pictures this year during our 11 day stay.

And I thought *I* took a lot of pictures!! Wow! I have an 8 megapixel Nikon with a 1 gig card and we bought another 1 gig card and a spare battery and I thought I was really prepared! Yikes! Now I am panicky thinking I need more ... ! we will be there for 6 days. I do plan to delete extras at night, etc, but do you guys think this is enough. This is our first trip.

It's never about how many pictures one takes, it's about how many USABLE pictures that one takes.
