Just wondering how many of you have gotten up grades when you check in to get your car.. I am reading alot of you get upgrades... I have booked an intermedtiate with dollar. I am thinking of going with a compact. I would save about $100.00. It sounds like most of you all get an upgrade because they are out of what you booked...What are my chances....thanks,,,corvair

it's a chance you take and down to pot luck....

personally i wouldn't rely on getting a free upgrade....

if you think you need an intermediate then stick with it and if you then get offered an upgrade then it'll be a bonus....

if you don't get offered an upgrade then you'll be stuck with a compact and it maybe too small

An upgrade is NEVER guaranteed and should be considered a bonus. We have had good/bad luck with rentals every time we needed one for various vacations.

We have reserved an ICAR (intermediate size, ie: Grand Am) only to be told there weren't any, a 2 hour wait, would you care for a minivan or FCAR (full size, ie: Grand Marquis)??? Of course we took the upgrade just so we could get out of there and it has always worked to our benefit!

I suggest you signup on the car company's website as a member. Again, this isn't a guarantee you will get an upgrade but it will improve your chances. You may also want to check out the Entertainment Books for the car rental coupons inside and check with AAA also. Check the rates on travelocity and Expedia too.

Corvair, I would reserve the vehicle that best suits your needs and hope for something better. I would not reserve something smaller than you need and count on an upgrade. You may, and probably will, end up disapointed. Plus, if you get to the car and it is too small and you need to go up a car class at the counter they will charge you a premium for it.

I always follow Murphy's law when it comes to things like this. The best rule of thumb is to plan on getting what you reserved and be happy if you get more.

Incidentally, I have been renting cars on every trip I have gone to Disney over the last 20+ years and I cannot recall one time I was offered a free upgrade to something better. Now, when I was in Vegas 2 years ago, I reserved a mid-size and they wanted to give me and my wife a Mini-Van. Bearing in mind this was our first trip alone without my son since he was born, I did not want a mini-van, we drive one at home. We ended up talking with the agents and they agreed to give us a PT Cruiser, so it worked out ok...

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will just stay with my intermediate... My DH would not like to be stuck with a compact........thanks,,,corvair
