I forget how the sign next to the penny press machine is worded, but I think it reads that machine it is one of the orginal penny press machines at WDW..)

If I remember correctly ( from the guys who work merchandise at DTD ) i think the DQ machine is the first on property.

Beside the cost adding up over time (especially if you buy the books to put them in) this also gets to be a time consuming activity. You literally could spend your entire vacation in search of penny machines. Find the machine, wait in line, wait to press, etc can take up a lot of time.

Your best bet is just to purchase x number of rolls or quarters at your bank. I would think 3 or 4 rolls for each child should do. Then collect enough older pennies to go with the quarters or just get a couple of penny rolls at the bank.

Bring along a zip lock type bag for each kid. The snack size bags work good. Put a bunch of quarters and pennies in the bag at the start of each day. Pressed pennies can go right back in the bag and then you can put them in the books all at once to save time. This is a good activity for the end of the day back at the hotel - not while walking around the parks.

My count is 273 pressed pennies to be found at the 4 theme parks and Downtown Disney. There are also 40 pressed quarters at those locations.
If you were to search out all of the other machines at WDW you would find 138 other pennies and 34 quarters.
My numbers may not be exact, but they will be very close.
Pressed pennies will need 2 quarters to operate, and pressed quarters will cost an additional 4 quarters to operate (a few only require 3).
If you were to try to get 1 of every pressed coin it would cost a grand total of approximately $400.00. You will never get them all in one trip, there is always machines that are out of service.

One other note. If you are a collector of pressed pennies, if you can, it is best to use pennies that are dated 1983 or erlier. These pennies are made of copper. Pennies made 1984 to present are made of copper plated zinc. You will find that the zinc will create silver colored stripes on your pennies. And also, if you wash the coins and remove tarnish before you press them they look very nice. It is difficult to clean them after they have been pressed, and will remove their luster.

After typing all of this I now realize that I know way too much about this subject to not be cnsidered obsessed. I don't know where to find a 12 step program for something like this.

I never understood why I keep getting soda out of that machine at my work, I thought I was going to get a penny with the words "Diet Coke" embossed on it.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Yes, you definitely need therapy! :rotfl:

How much are the books? Can you buy them in the resort gift shops or just in the parks?

You can get non disney ones at any souvenier shop...I picked up a couple at our local musuem as our kids like to do pressed pennies everywhere. So if it doesn't have to be a Disney one (which I'll probably buy at least 1 per child while in WDW too) - you can get them from any souvie shop or we have a baseball card store/memorabilia store nearby that carries them. Under $5 for the books when I bought them.

mikey13v, don't worry you're not obsessed... haha i actually have been collecting pressed pennies since i was 5 (i am now 21). i have 150+ pressed pennies from all up and down california and mostly from disneyland... and to my dismay, they are ALL pressed with pennies 1984 and later... i too thought shiny was the way to go...

but... now im prepared and bought some 350 pennies from 1957 off ebay!! haha... believe me... everybody if you actually press them with the all copper pennies, your 51 cent investment can turn into $200+ dollars... i saw a retired mulan penny on ebay going for $270 dollars! just double your pennies so you still have one to keep... wow... okay thats all.. im done.. haha see you at the machines everyone!!

OHHH! Great thread! I hope to do these for ds on our trip too. Not sure how many I want to do. I am thinking enough to fill up a whole book but then again, I do not want to cut into money for his mr potato head and such. Oh why does there have to be sooo many cool things out there that I want to get for him?? :rotfl:

What is the best way to clean them?
I've heard Ketchup?? Coke??

I tried oxy clean- I use it for everything :rolleyes1 didn't work too well.

So experts what is best to use?

DS9 had the best time doing pennies in January! We brought a roll of quarters and a roll of pennies, then we would give him quarters that we got back as change.

He typically didn't get all three designs from each machine - he just chose the ones he liked the most. Sometimes he would do all three from one machine, sometimes just one.

He filled up the book (we bought it at Pop and it was about $6.95) so he will need a new one in October.

We didn't clean our pennies before the trip because I just didn't think about it. We like to clean them in salt and vinegar. We did that in DS's science class for "super science" where the parents had to come in and do a neat little thing with the kids. Some salt in a paper cup, a bit of vinegar, add the pennies, swish, dry with soft cloth. :)

I have used Tarnex to clean them.
Wash them first, then pour some Tarnex into a plastic bowl. Using rubber gloves, place the pennies in the solution for less than a minute. Remove from solution and rinse very well with hot water. place on a towel and dry completely.
You wont believe the luster they end up having.
This stuff is quite corosive, so be careful with it.
