I know that for most of us this is unthinkable , but I am curious as to how many this
happened to.

I am also wondering what The DVC folks might of originally thought
about this when they did the original calculations for expected occupancy rates. Did
they think that 95-96% of points would be redeemed ? Higher? Lower? And what is
the reality?

I'll be anxious to see how this poll goes. I think this is an interesting question.

I wouldn't have thought about it from Disney's point of view until you brought it up. I believe that by law they couldn't oversell like the airlines do on flights but you're probably right that they had a statistical estimate of what percentage of points would expire without being used.

I've had points expire once.....I bought an add-on in February, for 60 points, and I was too close to my use year to bank those points, so they went to never never land....I hated that! I was going down in May with the 60 points in my next use year.....I have an April Use year. This was before there were any boards that I knew up (1995), and I didn't have anyone to offer the points to. Now, I rarely even bank points....although, I have 8 points left in this use year, that might get banked....YIPPEE!! But, probably not...LOL.

I once had some expire when a vacation I booked for my mom and her friend had to be cancelled. (she was hospitalized). I had booked 9 days in January for them at OKW, and instead what they were able to do was go in Feb. The only thing available was for 4 days - and it was too late for me to bank the points since my use year starts in April. I didn't ask about this being a special case or anything - I was pretty new at the DVC back then. Now I would ask.

I would never let my points expire however, this can happen. The one time I had some points ready to expire I got in touch with a cast member and asked them if he and his family would like to spend a night at WDW. Yes, they did take advantage and went to Vero Beach for the night in a 2 bedroom. They had a wonderful time and I felt that I just didn't waste the points. I would rather give the points away than let them expire.

What do you mean? We are borrowed till 2042 I can see how unforseeable circumstances could leave someone in a position to lose points. If need be, we know lots of people who live in Fla. that we could call to give them away to. They should have a "members pool" so that people could donate for other members and then when you need a few extra you could take from it. Kind of like "a penny in a penny out" like you see at some cash registers.

we, too, had points expire when we purchased an add-on very close to our use year. oh well.

We had four points expire; not worth trying to rent or perturb our plans to capitalize on.

We now have fifty points that are in danger of expiring, though we haven't decided our vacation plans for this year yet. (We just got back to Egypt, so we don't have any vacation time left...)

:) Hello and just let me say this forum is wonderful for us DVC members glad I found it. Yes I have let points expire only a few because I couldn't plan any other way to use them up. My suggestion to the board was to bank all unused points in pool to be used towards some children wish or sunshine foundation a charity for kids to bring terminally ill children to WDW for a couple days.. Disney has a charity like this but I thought this could be something nice the DVC members could do also could be a Tax write off or lower our monthly nut. What you all think. George

Just recently purchased but will have some points that expire. We bought through resale and the contract had some points in reservation status. We didn't want to borrow into next year and we just couldn't get the points for our stay to add up to the exact points in reservation status. So I think we will end up having 3 or 4 points in reservation status expire. But I can say with almost 100% confindence, these will be the only points we will ever let expire. A lot of money invested and love Disney way to much to give points back.

we almost did as our CM did us a FAVor and gave us a diffrent year end date that I was not aware of so we need to get special assistance to bank 120 points as opposed to losing them. That was making me very unhappy but it all worked out in the end!

I like this idea :-):bounce:

It's upsetting to see how many of you lost points because you added on too close to your use year to be able to use them.

I also thought the same thing until recently. We added onto our VWL membership in mid-January. We have a February use year, and we never thought for once that we'd have those points any sooner than February.

Fortunately, I was making a reservation during this time. The CM from MS told me to have my sales rep "file an exception on our behalf" to have the points banked. Even our sales agent was skeptical.

Sure enough, the transaction went through. Instead of having 2 weeks to use the points, they were banked and we have this entire use year to use them.

We're only members for one year. I don't think we will ever have unused points. We don't have enough points to begin with! ;)

Well in my case I made a ress for a friend in oct and cancelled ress did not write down cancellation # only to find out when I received survey the 2 nights were never cancelled so now I write down # and call back at least 2 times to make sure nothing is hanging out.
