How many military tickets?

I called Disney today to find out about military discounts for our upcoming trip. After being on hold for over an hour I finally got to talk to someone. When she asked me how many days tickets I needed I said 8. She said you can only get 4-day or 5-day salute tickets. I told her that that won't work. She said that DH could order 4 5-day tickets and then 4 4-day tickets which would be 9 days for the 4 of us. The way I understand it, he can only buy 6 tickets total. Is she right or am I? How would you deal with this situation? I am trying to figure out what the best deal is.

You are both right, but it depends on what kind of tickets we’re talking about. You will need to buy 4 of one kind and 4 of another, but they can’t all be salute tickets because you can only get six salute tickets per service member. So, you can get 4 5-day and 2 4-day tickets as salute tickets. The other 2 4-day tickets can’t be salute, but can be one of the other military discount ticket types.

If you have an ITT office near you then I would go there and they will know exactly what route to get you the best deal. If you don't have one, my suggestion is call/email Camp Pendleton or Shades of Green Ticket Office. They will do that for you as well. You cannot buy Salute tickets on the phone/online with Disney. You can only buy them at the parks and that is not what you'd like to do since you need park reservations, plus you have to pay taxes at the gate. Honestly, I don't even know if you can buy Salute tickets anymore at the gate at WDW?? After FP+ became a thing (RIP) I have always gone through Shades or CP.

Yes, you are correct that you can only buy 6 Salute tickets total for your family of 4. You'd have to get 6 salutes, and 2 Military discount tickets. I only ever buy Salute tickets so I cannot tell you which one would be the best after your 6 Salute tickets. This is where the ITT would come in handy.

Here is a price list from CP. Take a look and see what would work for you. (fyi, WDW is way down on the list, keep scrolling ...) ;)

You can buy 8 day tickets at a discount at your military base or through Shades of Green. It's not as steep a discount as the Armed Forces Salute though. Our last WDW trip we bought 10 day Park Hoppers via Shades. It at least saved on the tax WDW charges...in addition to providing a pretty hefty discount.

Doubling up and buying multiple AFS tickets doesn't make financial sense. And yes, there is a limit of 6 total. You can't buy 8 of them.

The max number of days you can do for the promotional military salute tickets is 5. If you need more than that, then you will either have to purchase a different ticket altogether, or the military tickets AND another ticket. The max number of tickets that can be purchased is 6 per servicemember, unless the servicemember has more than 5 dependents.

A non-promotional ticket will likely be less expensive, since the promotional tickets are over $300 each, while an regularly military discounted 8-day PH is less than $600.

I recommend contacting your local ITT/MWR/ITR or Shades of Green for a specific price list. If you order through those places, then you don't have to pay sales tax either, which is a good chunk too.

That was my thought too. Thanks for confirming that.
