How many miles before you ditch your shoes?

I can't believe my shoes would already need to be retired, but I'm having so many problems. They're almost at 200 miles. Anyone replace their shoes that early? :confused3

Don't really know-I like to change every four months at 25 miles a week or approx. 400 miles. My PT just said today every 500 miles. I'm sure how well the shoe is made and weather it endures has some impact.

Not generally, but I have switched to a completely different model/brand before the 300-mile mark, so I guess that kind of counts.

Are these a new model for you, or something you have been using for a while?

It is a model I have had success with - Saucony Rides.

I thought I just had a shin splint, but I'm thinking I might have a stress fracture. I just went and did some reading online. We went to the water park today and it hurt badly going up and down the stairs. I just read to try jumping on the leg ten times and if there was pain or you couldn't do it it might be a stress fracture. I couldn't even do one jump. Sitting here I have a dull ache in my shin.

I just ran the Peachtree and don't have anything I have officially signed up for so I guess I might as well lay off it this week and try to get into the ortho.

I was just hoping it was the shoes. :sad2:

That's a bummer. I hope you recover soon.

I don't track my mileage. I know when my shoes are getting worn I can just feel it. Plus I know how long I've had them so that is a good clue. Once i feel them getting a bit worn I regulate them to the shorter runs of 4 miles or less.

It's weird and I posted something the other day but I can just tell when my shoes have died. One day I'll go out and just know that is it. Happened on the last 3 pair. Just one day that's it, they're dead.

But, that doesn't help you with the mileage question. I really don't know because I usually have 3 pair in rotation.
Good luck,
Duane

I was just fitted for shoes this weekend and the guy at the store said every 500 miles. I bought Brooks Defyance2. They are great shoes. They take video of you running and fit your shoes from there. They also gave me some exercises to help fix my gate to cut down on my shoe wear. I would suggest a shoe store in your area that specializes in running shoes.

I have the same problem with my shins, I got it a few weeks back in both legs and thought I could just run through it :rotfl2: when I was unable to walk after a run I took my shoes in I had about 200 miles on them but the lady said it looked like I had more than 500 on them, I got some new ones and went on my merry way.

I started back training after giving myself a few days to recover and my right leg feels great but my left leg isn't improving the same, it feels better while I run but I am still in lots of pain after, rest doesn't help and I can't run through it, I am considering strapping it up???

I was just reading your post Shan and I too can't even do one jump on my leg, in fact I can barely stand on it. And it aches all the time and it is even sore to the touch, I ice it after every run and am resting up as much as possible, my crocs are the only shoes that help. I think I might have damaged it when I tried to run though the pain last month, I took my shoes back and they still look fine and my other leg was relieved immediately. Anyone any advice???

Kirsty

PS sorry for borrowing your tread but it sounds like we had similar problems

Kirsty, I went to orthopedic today. They did x-rays and it showed no fracture, but he feels I have medial tibial stress syndrome??? He said this was a precursor to a stress fracture. I was given a steroid shot, anti inflammatory drugs and was told to ice three times a day and buy a compression sleeve for my calf. I can't run for a week and then I have to start back slowly. Starting at 50%, then the next week increasing. If I experience any pain I'm to call him and he is going to do a MRI. He wanted to give me a steroid pack, but I had a bad experience with that before when I got poison ivy - didn't sleep for like a month and my blood pressure was sky high forever... Good luck!

I've only been running for 18 months, but have replaced my shoes a couple times at 250ish miles. I started to get shin splints, so I rested, replaced my shoes and that solved the problem. I hope it feels better soon. REST!!
