How many DVC folks have gone to DL and stayed using their points?

We have just returned from a GREAT 6 night stay at OKW. Of course on the plane home...wheels were turning about THE NEXT TRIP. Our oldest son would LOVE to go to DL so I am interested in how many of you have gone to CA and visited DL. Did you like it? I forget what the resort is out there that has DVC rooms/villas now. Would it be IMPOSSIBLE to book a 2 bedroom at the 7 month mark for say June??? I would love any tips and advice. THANKS

DVC is at the Grand California. I booked a studio at 7 months for the first week of May. I've also used my points at Paradise Pier for a regular room.

We were at DL in July 2010 and stayed at the GCV in a studio. I booked at the 7 month window. We had a WONDERFUL trip. We were only at DL for 3 days (spent a week in Newport Beach also which was great). I would stay at DL longer next time!

We haven't used our points yet, but we went to DLR in 2009 and loved it. We are going again in May, finally getting to use our VGC points. I don't know about booking at 7 months. Some people have reported having great success if they call right at the 7-month mark. I *think* CA schools don't get out until later in June, so if you go earlier in the month, you might have better luck.

As far as the park goes - we really enjoy it. It is Disney, but different. We love both WDW and DLR for different reasons. If you go thinking "this will be just like WDW" you'll be disappointed. However, if you go thinking "I can't wait to experience this resort destination" you'll be pleased. DLR has a lot to offer and the Villas are just beautiful. Also, as you plan, the folks on the DL boards are extremely helpful as you start your planning.

We took the whole family to the Grand Californian last summer and booked at the 7 month mark in a 2BR. We are going back in April of this year. We loved it. Read up on it on the Disneyland page on the Dis Boards and the Grand Californian lovers page.

One of the things we planned around is the "block out dates" for the southern California annual pass. The parks were less crowded because the southern California pass was blocked out while we were there. It is worth researching all aspects of a trip there but it was GREAT.

I was able to get a studio villa at less than 3 months this past February. I really enjoyed the resort.

Oooh - the Grand Californian is a fabulous resort, and yes, Disneyland is a fabulous park too. Definitely check out the VGC Owner's & Lovers thread, and spend some time on the Disneyland boards as well. There are lots of threads with photos and descriptions to be found throughout.

Do know that VGC is absolutely the smallest DVC resort coming in with only 48 rooms total, 2 of which are GV's. There are 23 dedicated 2 br's and 23 lock-off's. So far I've noticed quite a few people indicating success with the 7 month window, but a lot of us out there believe that it will get harder and harder once the construction/renovations currently happening throughout Disney California Adventure park are completed. World of Color opened last summer and takes over the Paradise Pier lagoon each night, The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Under Sea Adventure opens in May of this year, Goofy's Sky School opens later this year, and the all-new land, CARSLAND, with Radiator Springs Racers (kind of like Test Track but with 2 tracks racing each other instead of just the one track of TT) is slated to open in 2012, along with an entirely new park entrance and Buena Vista Street with the new Red Car Trolley (making it look like Hollywood in the 1920's when Walt first arrived in So. Cal) will debut in 2012 as well.

One of the very cool things about the Grand Californian, is that it is the only resort, DVC or otherwise, with an entrance directly INTO a theme park. It literally is considered part of the DCA park, and many of the DVC rooms have balconies looking directly over and in to the Paradise Pier section of DCA. The entrance is private, good only for guests of any of the 3 DL resort hotels - Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel and of course, the Grand Californian. And that entrance is literally just steps away from Soaring (Over California) and Grizzly River Run (much like Kali River Rapids, though longer and a bit better). It's also a short walk from the new Little Mermaid attraction, and all of Paradise Pier, including Toy Story Midway Mania.

If you haven't been before - it's definitely worth a trip IMO. The entire DL Resort area could easily fit inside AK and it's parking lot - so just know in advance that it will be very, very different from anything you've experienced at WDW...yet very similar and familiar in many ways too. Disneyland of course is also the original Disney theme park, and without it there would be no WDW. It's the only park that Walt every actually stepped foot in. Sure he ultimately picked the WDW property and walked it, but he died long before any construction in Florida ever began. He not only walked through DL, but ate and slept there too and his apartment on Main Street is still there, above the Fire Station. IMO it's definitely a must-do at least once in life for any Disney fan.

Many of the attractions are similar, since many at WDW were put in the MK because of DL - but over time, many at DLR have been added based on their success in WDW too. However there do remain a number of unique attractions that you will only find at DL, including the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Pinocchio's Daring Journey, Alice in Wonderland, Storybookland Canal Boats, Casey Jr. Circus Train, Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin, Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Indiana Jones & the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, The Enchanted Tiki Room (the ORIGINAL version, not that "Under New Management" version at the MK), and the Sailing Ship Columbia. There are some unique attractions at DCA as well, including the Golden Zephyr, California Screamin', Silly Symphony Swings, and the soon to be Little Mermaid attraction (MK's version isn't slated to open until 2012 or 13), Flik's Fun Fair and it's kid-sized attractions and of course the upcoming Carsland and it's numerous attractions.

Staying at the VGC is also a good way to explore some of the "other" attractions around So. Cal. There are great beaches just 15-20 minutes away, Knott's Berry Farm is only about 10 minutes away, Universal Studios is about 45 minutes north, Sea World and the world famous San Diego Zoo are just an hour and half or so south, and many, many other So. Cal destinations. There's a LOT to see and experience in So. Cal, and many of the schools in the area don't let out until around the 2nd week of June - however, several of the school districts have gone to "year round" school - with numerous "tracks" - so there's no real consistency to it anymore as there was when I grew up in So. Cal.

Have fun exploring it as an option! :)

WOW thanks so much for all the information. :) I have checked out the DL board here on Dis. I will keep exploring. :)

I have only traveled to VGC once in February of 2010 and for the most part was successful at the 7 month window....

....this is such a great response that I feel like I am in the mode to return there next summer. Since we went in February it was to cold to go to the beaches or to enjoy much of SoCal, but the next time around exploring will be a must...

From my experience so far the 2BR's often seem to be the last type of room available and the earlier you go in June the better luck you're likely to have.

We stayed at a one bedroom last June at the Grand Californian and had a wonderful time. The resort is the nicest DVC we have ever stayed in and the ability to walk to all things disney was great. You will really love the Grand Californian.

We have done Grand Californian once and Disneyland hotel once and we are going to be staying at the disneyland hotel with points again in two weeks.:cool1:

CA schools do not get out until late June, so the first part of June is your best bet.

We are DL regulars - we go at least once a year and own at VGC. We have also stayed at all three DL hotels there: Grand Californian (before VGC existed),Paradise Pier and DL Hotel. All three are nice in their own way.

DL is completely different than WDW, and as my kids say: DL is where Mickey lives, WDW is where he vacations (LOL)

Definately give DLR and the VGC a try! Everyone has already given such great advice and opinions. Our last 4 Disney trips have been every other year at DLR, because we enjoy it that much. Yes it is different from WDW in many ways, but it is the original and for that reason we love it all the more. As for the VGC they are simply wonderful. The best Disney stay we have ever had. Overlooked Paradise Pier and could see WOC off in the distance. It was magical! :goodvibes

We went last May and loved it! It was fun being in the park and seeing everything. We saw the testing of World of Color from our Balcony! We stayed in a Grand Villa and a 2 bedroom. It was our first Disney experience and we can't wait to go back in 2012 when the new stuff opens!!

We LOVE DL and the Grand! It is why we bought into DVC. We have never had a problem getting in at the 7 month mark. May is our favorite time of the year to visit, followed by October. Have a great time!

Used my points for a 1bedroom at grand California in March 2010. We loved it! Can't wait to do it again sometime. Loved the room location, we looked out at the World of Color light show.

Here is a tip: we flew into Orange County (John Wayne airport) it was cheaper and there is a shuttle to the Disney hotels that didn't cost us much. Also we enjoyed Orange County airport better than LAX.

we loved it there as well at the GC. flying into LAX has more options on flights, but some prefer Orange County for an easier (if there is one) drive. Traffic really is a pain, and if you plan on renting a car remember that a 30 mile drive equals 90 minutes for most of the day. we did visit LA and even got lucky and got picked for tickets to the Ellen show. Not my choice but my wife was elated. We took a tour of Hollywood and even saw the original Hotel that the Tower of Terror was created from.

We spent 3 nights at Paradise Pier back in 2005 (waaay before VGC). Hoping to get into VGC in Aug. 2012 on our way back from Hawaii for 2 or 3 nights on points. IF we can't get into VGC on points then we'll likely just do the PP again (will have to check out just how many points they want & then decide if a cash pkg deal would be better since we'll need park tix too).:rolleyes1

BTW when does the new Cars Land open?!:confused3
