Deciding if we should get our camcorder fixed or buy a new one?

Will have camera/underwater camera.

Find if one is recording they miss out. But have great fun/memories watching them later.

Any info/feeling on the subject ?

How do you pack a camcorder, carry on or in the suitcase?

Thanks
Linda

We are doing the "Should we bring it debate" right now.

The pro,of course is you get the great memory later.

The cons, seem to be many:

1. Money, if your present one is outdated and you'd consider getting a new one.

2. packing space

3. Keeping it charged.

4. Carrying it around

5. Not losing it

6. It seems more intrusive than a still camera.

7. The person filming seems to miss out.

Seems like a lot of cons.

Jim

PS For the first time, We did not take ours to Europe last year and did not miss it.

and are leaving it home this time I found it was much easier to just take pictures, we never seem to sit down and watch the movies anyhow. I had a real problem too of the lens fogging up when I would step out on the veranda,

We brought ours on our first cruise but we are thinking the same to just leave it home since its outdated now! WE have a new digital camera and an underwater camera we are going to bring. Unlike some we do enjoy watching the movies later and especially sharing them with our family.:)

I opted not to take our camcorder on our cruise in August, just took our digital. I have sooooooooooooo many tapes of us in WDW, and other vacations, that we never look at. Our DD enjoys watching her birthday and Christmas tapes all the time and she just turned 13, she never ask about watching vacation tapes.

Besides that would just one more thing for me to have to carry around and worry about. DW doesn't use the cameras. One time in WDW, while DD and I were in one of the Fort Wilderness pools, DW was trying to film us in the pool. We got home, looked at the tape, and saw five minutes of the lights above the pool, you could hear us talking, you just couldn't see us. LOL!!!

Jim, are you working at a prison....cons?

I have only taken my video camera once and thankfully got all the nights of Dueling Pianos with THE PIANO GUY - the great, the incomperable Fidelio doing the family show.

I also got a new cute clips but for the most part - it's a pain in the buns to haul around and the filmer definitely gets left out of the action.

BRING LOTS OF FILM -
Get your pictures developed on ship - yes, a bit expensive but if you can get a great shot of "Mickey" hugging on your kid, then why buy it from Shutters.

Jim - I missed ya' kiddo!

I just love your wife - she's my husbands twin sister!!!!!!!

If you have little ones, I vote for bringing it! The video of my kids at the program at the end of the week where my boys are on stage and Mickey comes out is priceless! It makes me cry everytime I watch it!

I edit my movies on the computer and mix in my still photographs, and I have wonderful movies my family loves to watch!

We do the debate every time. This last time we took it, filmed some of the sail away party and taped the kids show at the end. We taped that b/c the KIDS can't see the slide show of themselves! Dh will make a slide show with our digital pictures and then will put in a few clips of video here and there.

I'll agree, the person taping definitely misses out! Usually dh tapes, but this time I did and I missed a lot of stuff! :(

We took ours on our first Magic cruise, and I filmed everything I could possibly film. :) We took it on the second cruise too, since it was the Western itinerary this time. Although we didn't film as much the second trip, we still filmed quite a bit. Plan on taking it on our January Wonder cruise too, as my parents will be with us and they have never cruised before. I know that tape will be a priceless memory to have, especially after my parents are no longer with us. Yes, it's kind of a pain to haul it around but I know I'm always glad to have the tapes when we get home.

Sounds like I'm the wierd one...but that's nothing new..

Anyways, We'll bring our little video/digital camera...35 mm...the digital camera 4mp AND underwater cameras!!

I know!!!! But I want some video to remember from the trip. We've never been to WDW, going there before our cruise. The kids have never been on a cruise, they'll be 13 and 15 next month when we go. The digital is great cuz you know why..we'll just get another memory stick. The underwater will take cuz we plan to do lots of snorkeling. The reg. camera pics' are cheaper than the digital. With the digital, you can come home and send some right away to email everyone. The little video/digital we don't use for still shots cuz the quality just isn't the same as our digital. But that was our first camera before we got the digital.

Some things you get on the video just isn't the same in still shots from the camera. I"m not planning on taking LOTS of video. But a little here and there. Fun to watch over and over with the family. Relive the Magic...
ok...too much info.

I agree with you 100% here. I won't leave home without my camcorder. Those tapes are so cool to watch later on. We took my mil with us last year, who is sick with cancer. She had a great time, but I'm certain it was to be her last vacation with us.

It's the stuff you can't capture in photos---the sounds of the ship, the jokes the waiters make with you, the laughing of your kids (they grow up so fast !).....priceless stuff imho.::yes::

Digital is too cool!

If the format is the old analog, you can convert to digital later which is what I have undertaken. With digital today it's too easy to burn a digital DVD and the kids sit around and watch it over and over like they would a video.

It's not cheap. from the camera, to computer and software and burner. and lots and lots of hard disk space.

I noticed the little ones love to re-live the trip.

we brought both a video camera (bring extra batteries) and lots of film for cameras. took tooooo many pictures but it was well worth it. the memories will last forever. 1 important thing, have the camera running when you first get on the ship. the memory s will last for ever and the view is the best.

I will have my new Canon G3 digital camera that takes digital video as well as stills. I love technology.
We hauled a video camera on the first two trips and then found that it was just not worth the trouble.

We have done both (go cruising without it, and cruised with the video camera). This last time DH didn't want to bring it, but I did. We will probably bring it again next year because we will be driving next year (makes it easier to bring things).

We like watching our video now and then, but then the ones on the Travel Channel are even better  .......BUT one day, a long long time from now, my babies (twins who are 10 now), will be all grown and who knows what our lives will be like, and I am sure I will enjoy watching the videos in the future.

I am taking all 3 with me on our trip this December. My DH and I are doing a vow renewal on the ship and my DS is our best man. since it will be only the 3 of us, I'm going to videotape the ceremony for the family. Our last trip, (in 2001) we took both the 35mm camera and the digital camera. Took lots and lots of pics!!::yes::
I say go for it!! :hyper:

i must be nuts too, i bring my cam, digital, and a 35mm and i look like a real tourist when i'm on the shore excursions, all these cameras hanging off my neck. i think its a pain too but when i get home i love to look at all we did, of course i'm mostly looking at the tapes by myself, people seem to disappear when i hit play, who ever heard of doing homework in the summer or walking the dog, we don't even have a dog.anyway, somewhere down the line i know that all the work of filming and picture taking will be well worth it.

My vote is - if it's your FIRST time definitely take it to have the memories.

I took it the last two times (1 w/kids - 1 w/out) & love having the memories on tape, but we're not bringing it this time just because of all of the hassles mentioned. Our camera wouldn't only fog up, but would shut right down & not start up again for hours. It was SO annoying. I got some good tips on how to prevent that, but I chose not to take it this time anyway because there are so many other reasons not to.

That being said, I am a BIG photography buff & although we don't watch the tapes a lot, we do sit down every few years & look at them & it's a blast to watch with the kids. They love looking at themselves years ago & hearing themselves. What memories! Hearing the horn on the tape & seeing the ship, island, my husband in the belly-flop contest, etc. is priceless to me.

we took our camcorder and digital camera both--it was our 1st cruise. DH was the one doing the filming but he claims that it was enjoyable to him, didn't feel like he was "missing out". Now, thanks to him, we have great film of us at the sailaway & tropical parties, at Studio Sea trying to learn line-dancing and of the kids each doing their own Karoke (this is the best!!) My kids have really enjoyed watching it & reliving the moments. We did not take it with us to any of the islands or to dinner, mostly used it just for the items listed, which cut down on carrying it around everywhere.
