How long would you leave it to book?

Hi guys,

We would really like to go to Disney in Feb 2022, we are in Canada and currently our border is closed.... how late would you leave it to book a trip (staying on site?) I would book now if I could but I don't want to run the risk of the border still being closed (surely it will open before then!) and I'd like a bit more "magic" to be back, so it's kind of watch and wait but I'm nervous that I'll miss out on hard to book things if I wait super long.... we want to visit in off season so it's not super hot and a little cheaper, so if not Jan/Feb 2022 we will have to wait til Fall of 2022 instead...which I could live with but it feels like forever.

Disney reservations are fully refundable... room only up to 5 days before arrival & packages are 30 days. So the only risk to booking early would be the exchange rate if you do cancel. It’s hard to predict how fast any particular resort’s room categories will book. If you are flexible in the resort & room type, you should be fine waiting until you’re more sure of the travel situation. If you have a specific resort & room you really want, it is more risky to wait. Note, January has MLK holiday & February has President‘s day. Both weekends can be pretty busy.

Right now dining reservations are 60 days out, so no worries about missing out on those for a long time. And no fastpasses, tours or other special ticketed events to worry about either.

I am losing count of how many trips we have postponed since the outbreak, but we have just postponed this month and October 2021 to December 2021 and March 2022. We use a US TA and each time, she very patiently moves the reservation for us and reassigns the deposits. We have independently booked flights for the December trip but March flights from the U.K. are not released yet. The advantage of booking now ( other than having something to look forward to) is that you can make your APRs. Good luck.

What are the things You are thinking are hard to book?

Since you are looking at a low season, it seems you can wait a long time. I would imagine airfare would be a deciding factor?

I booked a short trip for May just a few weeks ago. No airlines involved, staying offsite. It Is still 5 days away from booking dining reservations for anyone during my week. And I wouldn’t have picked the dates if Park Reservation availability was full. (I picked my dates based on ticket price - there were two midweek days that were the lowest since February; I figured that was based on historically low attendance / demand for tickets, so hoping for lower crowds).

Fellow Canadian here, I feel your pain! We're planning for fall 2022 and it really does feel like forever.
I think you're safe to wait unless you have your heart set on a specific resort/room type or you're travelling over the holiday weekend. Like the previous posters have said, you can also book now and change/cancel if needed.

Ideally we want all star movies but if it fills up we would go with Art of Animation so it's not a huge deal

Really you could book a package now, and make your park reservations. That's about all you can do at this point. There aren't any special offers yet for that time. ADRs don't open until 60 days prior. There isn't really anything else to book in advance (as of yet). If you are concerned about cancelling and losing due to the exchange rate, instead of cancelling just push the deposit out to a new date in the future.

agreed with everyone...I would book now and only delay the flights (which cost more from Canada and for us are cheaper closer to our dates). If they come out with specials for your dates, you can have them applied to your reservation -- we've done it several times.

Feb. isn't necessarily low season. that's when all our trips have been and the place is packed for Pres. Week. It's a great time though because the weather has almost always been great compared to what they were having in Nova Scotia at the time ie. winter.
