I know my mom always said you can keep eggs past their expiration date, but how long? Mine expired a month and a half ago. That's probably too long, huh?
the date is the "sell by" date, not the day the food somehow knows to spoil. They should still be good for at least 2 weeks past the sell by date. If in doubt, sink the eggs in a bowl of water. If they float, toss them. If they sink, they are good. Remember: Don't eat floaters!
That's so funny, I just did a search on this this morning since my eggs expired last week. What I found said that eggs bought before their expiration date should last 3-5 weeks past the date if they are refrigerated properly.
I never pay attention to the exp date. How do you know that the eggs in any particular carton are the ones that were in there when the date was stamped on it? Could have been consolidated into a carton at the store to remove broken or cracked ones.
I always test ALL eggs before using buy the water method mentioned above. Sinks to the bottom, OK. Stands upright with one end touching the bottom, OK right then, but I don't keep another day. And floaters get thrown out immediately.
and I love fresh eggs .....I can tell the difference ...and hers are also free range chickens........I do know that if the egg is not at least two or three weeks old ....they are not the best ones for deviled eggs ..they do not peel good .......just clean the eggs before I boil them in my macaroni to make macaroni salad......
The way I learned the 'water test' was, if they lay flat in the water, they are fresh enough to fry or use in recipes; if they stand up but are still touching the bottom, they are fresh enough to boil; if they float, they're gone...
