We used to live in Manhattan, and moved to the other side of the river for a little more space and little less money. Now I live right outside of NYC in a town that is only the size of 1 square mile, and everthing is similar to NYC living, no real houses, just aprartments and condos, unless you have a lot of money to have a brown stone. No car is needed, everything is walkable, and it is really an extension of NYC in many ways. Most people live here because of the convenience to Manhattan. We rely on public transporatation (ferry, path train, or bus, are all within minutes to the city) to get to the city for work, play, and doctor visits, pretty much everything is there. To me, this is city living.
However, we are moving down to Monmouth County by Jersey shore close to where we used to live over many years ago

This is a suburb where there are mostly all houses, yards, kids schools have play grounds (my daughter's current school goes to a nearby public park for recess), and you need cars to get to places, plus a much longer commute. This is a suburb.
