How long for formal pictures?

I am starting to look into photographers and I am trying to figure out how much time we need. I am planning on doing most of our pictures before the ceremony. How long should I allow for this?

I know I can ask the individual photographers but I am trying to figure out my budget first.

I think it depends on how big your families are and how many different combos of people you want. We did ours in about 30 minutes right after the ceremony, but we ran it with military precision, calling up each set of guests (we had 34) to pose with us - which felt awkward to me but got the job done!
