How long do you keep deli meats?

I bought some turkey at the grocery deli on Saturday afternoon. Do you think its still good? The package label says 'sell by 1/4/06.' What do you think?

You are probably border line right now. I got the sickest I've ever been from eating deli meat beyond the expiration date. It was only two days beyond. Better to be safe than sorry.

I usually buy my sandwich meat on Monday nights and eat it through the following Monday at work (My deli's "seel by" date is the day I buy it)

I bought some Turkey last Thursday night...

I JUST opened it and made a sandwhich with it for lunch today. (I put the bag in a tupperware container in my fridge)

it's fine...I'll eat it until it's gone to be honest...if it tastes funny or feels "slimy" then I'll toss it...but I've done this for years and never gotten sick.

We usually buy on Sunday and eat it through the week; so I would say you are fine. My dh will eat it for 2 weeks and has never gotten sick but I wouldnt recommend that!

Thanks guys... I'm going to go for it! :earsgirl:

If it is green it goes. Other than that if it gets by the nose the mouth gets it :teeth:

1/4/06 is the Sell by date. You still get a few days afterword. I think you are just fine. I always use my sense of smell on deli meat, you can tell if it has gone bad. Or if it looks slimy at all it gets tossed.

For sliced deli meat, I will only keep it about 3 or 4 days--this includes thing like sliced hams, bologna etc. Cured meats like pepperoni, salami I find last longer without getting funky. Cheeses may last a bit longer maybe 10-14 days. I like really fresh deli meats, so rather than get a ton, I'd rather go to the store twice in one week. Just something better in the taste of fresh sliced meat.

About 3-4 days. It doesn't taste good to me beyond that point. :)

Personally I don't like to keep it after a few days, but my DH used to work on a Deli counter at a grocery store in his youth and he insists it's okay for a week. I generally as a rule don't follow his advice, but you know it's up to you! At home in UK, they always have a USE BY date, as opposed to the SELL BY date we have here in US...which makes more sense than a sell by to be honest, because you then get this type of dilemma!

Good luck!

3 days max...after that I wouldn't eat it for anything and it goes in the trash.

do the sniff test

if it doesnt smell like the original product

HEAVE IT

I throw out any deli meat that hasn't been eaten by the 3rd day. It probably is good for a while after that, but I just can't stand to think of eating it after it's 3 days old in my fridge.
