How Long Before We Invade Iran?

I admit I am not a fan of GW. It sounds like the war of words is gearing up regarding Iran. How long before we send troops there?

It looks like Bush & Co. may be getting all their ducks in a row. :confused3

I hope it doesn't come to that.

Please God, I hope not. I think that if that happens, we will see the draft once again. My nephew is leaving for his 3rd tour of Iraq this month, and there are so many more brave men and women who have done so. I am sure that I don't have the answer to all of this, but I am not comfortable with the direction we are taking.

I think they would have to institute the draft again. There is not enough military to go around. GW's presidency cannot be over quick enough for my comfort level. He has us in such a mess over in Iraq. I absolutely support our troops over there and I appreciate how much they have sacrificed but I think it was a poorly planned and poorly executed exercise on GW's and Rumsfeld's part.

I pray that I am wrong about Iran but I feel that the administration has already decided that we are going in there and soon.

I am sick over all of this. I am the mother of four boys and I am not a supporter of the war. I never have been. I don't know what I will do if we go into Iran.

I don't think we can afford another war.

And I would like to know -- why are we (as in the United States) allowed to have nukes (more than any other country I believe), but no one else? :confused3 It's ironic considering we're the only country that, to my knowledge, has ever used one, whether you think it was justified or not.

I'm not saying I trust Iran with nuclear weapons, but still it's interesting.

I pray there is another option, Iran wises up and comes to terms with the world soon. Our soldiers are already fully commited all over the world, including our only son, due for his second Iraqi deployment this fall.

I don't think Bush will be that stupid. I would assume that all this tough talk is just that, tough talk. It's like bluffing in a game of poker. We're putting on a tough/poker face to try to get them to back down. As for us being allowed to have nukes and no other country? Well, I can only speculate as to why we don't want Iran to have them. I think it's because they hate us and we think that they might give a nuke to an Al Qaeda type group to use against us. These are just my opinions and should in no way be used as fact. I just wanted to say that because I don't want someone to come back later and tell me I said this was fact.

Mr Bush just gave a pass to India about nuclear enrichment , contrary to all accords about non proliferation that exist, but Iran connot have it...hummmm

I think the reason the admin. doesn't want Iran to have nukes is they are know supporters and endorsers to numerous terrorist groups ( from the top to bottom). The nukes could be used for terrorist attacks, not wartime military operations (aka the only time we've used nukes ).

I am a cynic (not sure when that happened either) and truthfully I think there is a "we can have it but you cannot" about nuclear weapons with many countries. We did not want India to have them either and have pretty much been against most countries that want them. Face it, they could wipe out life on this planet and are a big stick. It's always nice to have the biggest stick around. That ensures some measure of success. I don't think any country that has a big stick really wants any other country to have a stick that big. I am failry sure most administrations would be against most countries having them.

The Democratic Party's official blog features excerpts from a speech chairman Howard Dean delivered the other day to the Jewish Council for Public Affairs:

The Democrats have a better idea. First we will conclude the negotiations with the Chinese and the North Koreans to disarm North Korea. Secondly, under no circumstances will a Democratic Administration ever allow Iran to become a nuclear power. Three, we will kill or capture Osama bin Laden and four, the authority and the control of the ports of the United States must be retained by American companies.

Seems that Bush isn't the only one throwing around the harsh rhetoric. I would personally love for all 4 of those points to happen but no where have I found a Democratic plan to accomplish the North Korea and Iran goals. Clinton's negotiations failed to prevent North Korea from going ahead. Europe's big three of Britain, France, and Germany's negotiations have not gone anywhere towards deterring Iran. Part of me believes the rush towards war in Iraq including the poor planning was just for us to get in place for the ultimate show down with Iran. I think the military stick is going to have to be pulled but hopefully not used.

There will be no invasion of Iran. The US, a European country, Israel, or a combination of those powers will take out the Iranian nuclear facility via airstrikes.

I thought I was the only one who believed this. We are on both sides of Iran and could launch air stikes from both. I believe the 5th largest army and largest arab army had to be whipped out before taking on Iran. I expect that Isreal will be the one to take out the nuke plants.

Don't be too confused, remember, Iran's leader wishes to remove another country (Israel) from the map. He even publically refutes their existance as a country at all. Who else might those of his kind like to some day remove??

Let's speculate

1. Right between between Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran is now surrounded on either side by countries under US control. Tactically, it wouldn't be a far road to travel to get there, Everything is all right next door (on both sides, even).

2. Iran is in possession of a humungous oil reserve. They also hold what is speculated to be as much as 50% of the world's supply of natural gas.

3. As soon as Iran raised concerns about the tactics being used by U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq (Iran condemned them as terror attacks), they were immediately accused of supporting insurgents. Iran has accused British agents of terror attacks in Iraq.

4. The U.S. has given Iran a deadline, via the United Nations, to prove it has no nuclear weapons program. Since it turns out Iraq had no nuclear weapons, just like they said and tried to prove, it seems that it may not matter whether Iran even has a weapons program. It is a pretext for war that Iran obviously CLEARLY sees right through.

5. Despite concerns about the size of our military, we have a huge invasion force in the Middle East, large enough to conquer the entire region, supposedly.

6. In 2000, Saddam Hussein began trading oil for Euros. The euro appreciated something like 20 percent against the dollar between 2000 and 2003. Iran, Iraq, and Syria all discussed the switch from dollar to euro (with much posturing and threatening from Washington, supposedly, because this is terrible for our economy), but Iraq was the the only country to make the switch at that time.
When we took over Iraq soon after, one of the first things we did was to switch oil sales back to dollars.

Interestingly, Iran is making the switch from dollars to euros in 2006.

I won't argue with you about that. The only thing I will say is that there are many monsters in this world and I do find fault in the way we pick and choose which ones to do something about.

And only when we have something to gain.

Don't get me wrong, I do *not* want them to gain these weapons. But I guess I was trying to view it from their perspective -- in their eyes, this is likely more bullying from the West; I mean we DO have these weapons so their mindset may be "if you, why not us?"

Personally I wish the whole world was rid of these things, but I read an article that as little as 4 years ago the U.S. was opening a plant to make plutonium cores? :confused3
