How long before relief with an ear infection?

Another zombie thread returns. I hope the OP is better.:rotfl:

Darn. I was hoping it was a current thread. I am going through the exact same thing now. I have both ears infected but they don't hurt. Just muffled sounds & the tinnitus. I have 2 more doses to take of my zpac & no change. Like I said there's is no pain just the plugged up ears. I feel like I'm on a plane.

A z-pack is an odd antibiotic for an ear infection; azithromycin is more productive when treating an URI. Amoxicillin or Ceftin are usually much more effective but that doesn't mean I haven't seen people prescribed (and find success with) z-packs for an inner ear infection. Give the ABT about 4-5 days to kick in.. it's a 5-day dose pack but it remains in your system for an additional 5 days after its completion.

..... which is why I hated this particular antibiotic so much. I had terrible stomach pains with it and couldn't do anything to stop it since it was already in my system.

My daughter had chronic ear infections and nothing oral ever seemed to help. She always ended up with a shot of Rocephin. I'm so glad those days are over.

The infection may clear, but the fluid will still be there for a while giving you that stuff year feeling. Keep taking the Flonase and a decongestant. I hate zpaks for ear infections. This is why we have resistant bugs because docs are skipping first generation meds and going to the big guns. Amox works way better.

And start taking a probiotic and eating yogurt. It helps with the tummy stuff.

I am going to guess she is better after 3 years!

Yep, ear infection is much better now! LOL! :thumbsup2 That really was a weird one... haven't had anything else like it since. And I will still go to my grave refusing to ever have a Z-pak prescribed again. Actually, I had a heart attack and had a stent put in 6 months after that original post -- I'd still take that experience over the incredible, horrific stomach pain that $#%@ Z-pak caused!!!

I can't even remember now if the Durahist that was prescribed did the trick, or if the weird pressure just went away on its own.. But I hope the folks who have just posted recently here get some relief soon! It's an awful feeling!!

So glad you're better. From both the ear infection and the heart attack.

Count me as another one who will never take another Z-pak.

The Zpack is for the infection, not the clogging. I once had ears clogged for a month after an ear infection. No pain, just plugged. ANNOYING! I read to chew gum and I think that helped me a little. Also took Sudafed every day until they unplugged. Edited to add: Oops just noticed this thread is OLD! Sorry.

WHOA. This thread is 17 years old!! I typed in something about ear infections, and this is what popped up. I am pregnant, and I am on day 3 of the zpack... This started 6 days ago, and I have zero relief. I went to the doctor two days ago which is when I was prescribed the zpack. I'm assuming I don't have any relief because I'm preggo, and can't take decongestants like Mucinex.... Thoughts?? My head and ear feel like they are going to explode!!

Warm compresses may give some pain relief and won't hurt anybody.

17 years old? Don't think so.

No, this thread is only five years old. You were looking at when the original poster joined the disboards (1999), versus the post date (2011).

Best advice I have is to keep going back to your doctor, if your antibiotics aren't working.

Call dr asap and explain, lots of antibiotic resistant microbes cause ear infections and if you system is still struggling it's prob a good idea to press for a different antibiotic. This happened to my kids a few times, I think we ended up with Omnicef. Feel better
