how is the food at akershus?

I think I am in the minority - we ate there a few years ago and rather like the food. Not the best meal every but perfectly acceptable. And I thought the mix of buffet and plated food was nice

That said, I don't know if I would eat there (or at least pay those prices) without the princess interaction.

The look on my daughters face when Snow White gave her a kiss can make even the worst meatball go down easier

As a side note, we leave in just over a week for our next trip and will be eating here again, so hopefully we still enjoy it. :thumbsup2

I agree. I ate here because I really wanted to try Norwegian food and was a little bothered that they had turned it into a princess meal! What are the princesses doing in Norway anyway?

They really, really like to ride Maelstrom

For those of you that didn't like the meal, was it because it was just strange offering that you didn't care for, or was the food actually poor quality?

DD and DS will love the princesses, but the grandparents are going too and I want there to be some decent food options.

They used to have a very large variety (over 30 items on the Kaltbort) as well as many hot items. They were all very good. The selection has dropped and the food has been Americanized (especially for children). Just as long as they don't serve lutefisk almost anything they do will be an improvement.

We dined there about 2 weeks ago. My DH, who is 1/2 Norwegian, was disappointed at how Americanized the food was. I, on the other had, loved it. I had several cold salads that were extremely tasty. I also enjoy smoked salmon so I had plenty of that.

My entree was the salmon and it was very well-prepared. The vegetables had a nice brothy flavor. DH had the meatballs and said they were closer to the way his grandmother made than what he has had in a while (ie, he liked them better than what I make)

My kids barely touched their meals, but it wasn't because it wasn't good. My DS actually fell asleep and both of them were a little sick.

We ate there for lunch a few years ago, and didn't care for it. With that being said, I don't think it was the food, just not our taste! Now, the breakfast here is one of our favorites!

While I don't think we will be going back any time soon for dinner.. (We just didn't care for it. Very bland tasting..) We are thinking about trying Akershus for breakfast in the future for our two daughter's. I wish we liked the food better, but I guess you can't like everything! I will say that the cold board is very good and we loved our desserts.

I liked our breakfast there but lunch, not so much (except the dessert plate). Nothing on the lunch menu appealed to me that much so I settled on the stuffed pasta. It was drenched in this "lean cuisine"-esque white sauce that was just blech:sad2:.

It's a matter of personal taste.
I agree. I liked the food, and my DH and MIL were pleasantly surprised!

It is not your normal fare, but I thought it tasted good. I was surprised my DH enjoyed it. He grew up on southern fried cookin' and all he likes is southern style food, but he enjoyed the food.

My in-laws took us on a trip to DW 5 years ago and booked Akershus for dinner for my nieces. It was my FAVORITE meal of the trip. Upon the recommendation from our waiter I ordered:

Traditional Kjottkake - Ground Beef and Pork Dumplings served with Mashed Potatoes, seasonal Vegetables, and Lingonberry Sauce

It was very yummy! We loved the interaction with the Princesses and I plan on booking this for lunch or dinner on our next trip. Hubby and I went there for breakfast 4 years ago but I am not a big breakfast eater so I felt it was a waste of money (or dining credit) for me.

I guess we're in the minority here, but we've eaten at Akershus for lunch and dinner and for the most part really liked the food. The appetizer buffet with the cheese, cold cuts, seafood, etc. were a huge hit for our kids (2 and 5). The only thing I would not order from their menu is the kjottkake.

May I ask why you wouldn't order that? I only ask because I loved it and I'm hoping nothing was "wrong" with it, haha. It was one of my favorite meals in DW!

Yep!

We LOVE LOVE LOVE the cold board. Meats, cheeses, seafood, herring!!!, salads. Yum!

I love the plated food, too. I am all about Scandinavian cooking! We all loved it, actually. But, the menu has been dumbed down to fit "American palates". Sickening, really. A Norwegian restaurant should be able to serve good Norwegian food....not sub par because little Suzy wants to see Belle, but won't eat anything "different".

I vote for the princess meal to be MOVED and allow the good food back in :)

Totally agree! I don't have kids and I honestly kind of resent that my favorite restaurant was ruined like this.

It's hard to be angry at, say, CRT for turning into all-princesses-all-the-time because at least they fit there. No reason at all for them to take over Norway though!

They used to have good food at Akershus. Now they have Princesses.

Exactly! I'm part Norwegian and I remember going to the Epcot dining reservation kiosks in the 80's to book our Akershus reservation. It was my family's favorite Epcot restaurant. Now, they don't even serve lefse! I couldn't believe it!

But we were at Akershus for dinner in January, and the princess interaction was absolutely wonderful. Our youngest was going through a princess phase at the time and had a most memorable birthday dinner there. So I highly recommend it for that purpose. It's just not a place we would visit for the food.

We went Feb 2011 and no one liked their food but me - I had the mushroom ravioli and it was very good. It had some garnish like fried shallots or something (it's been a while) that made it flavorful, interesting, and "gourmet".

We must be in the minority, but we LOVED Akershus. We had dinner there two weeks ago. It was also our favorite character meal. We had 9 TS meals and Akershus was in our top 4. With that being said, if I had to choose Akershus or Le Cellier for lunch it would be Le Cellier hands down. The food is just better at Le Cellier. At Akershus the appetizer buffet was awesome, we really enjoyed that a lot. I had the Seared Herb-dusted Beef Tips and DH had the Traditional Kjottkake and we both really did enjoy our meals. My boys LOVED the princesses and their interaction was really great. I wish they hadn't have served the desserts family style, but they were delicious. I didn't like the rice cream, but absolutely loved the other two.

The food was too exotic for our taste, but the princess interaction was fantastic! Would we do it again? :confused3 Unlikely. To each his own.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? You can't have Norwegian food w/o lutefisk!

We've had both lunch and dinner here and really enjoyed both. Our last trip in March we had dinner. I had the pork and it was really yummy. I really don't think the food is unusual. It's pretty Americanized, but still good.

We went last year and I wasn't expecting much. Honestly I loved it. I had the salmon and it was some of the freshest salmon I've had on property. The appatizer buffet has some awesome smoked and pickeled fish. Honestly if you love seafood I think you'll like it. If you don't you may not be to impressed. DF wasn't impressed but I was talking with one of the girls that was working there and she was telling me that due to the nature of the restaurant they actually go through more salmon then anywhere else on property.

Since you are planning a nice table service meal for dinner, why not do a late breakfast at Askerhaus?? We always get a 10:30ish time. I think the breakfast is quite good. Love those little muffins & strawberry cream cheese on the cold bar...:lovestruc
