It's been my experience that I release them prior to catch. although I didn't fish there when the water level was back to normal, or maybe i just suck at fishing.
I took the kids out to catch some bream / spot /sunfish what ever you call them. They love they dough balls and are easy to catch with a bobber. Most of the bass like deeper / cooler water at the edge of the lake. I saw a kid top fishing a lure with just a little action. You really need live shiners at the lake to do any good. And yes there are some size to the bass in the lake.
Use shiners or live bait. Those fish have seen every lure possible and are used to live bait from the fishing charters. It is possible to catch with lures but you wont catch as much. (DH went fishing there on our recent trip.)
During the 80's and 90's I did a lot of fly fishing in the canals and sometimes the lake. I haven't fished the canals for like 10 years. I've caught some good sized large mouth bass in the canal next to the tennis courts at the Meadows. I've also caught some in the canal running behind the 1600 loop where the dog walk is. The best fishing is in the canals just past the bridge along that dog walk where the golf course is, but they will chase you off when and if they see you so you might only get in like 30min to an hour at dawn. Most that I have caught in that canal were on the bank opposite the bank adjoining the 1600 loop. I cast across into the weeds and that's where the bass like to sit. Below is one that I caught just passed that bridge and some were that size and some just a tad smaller.
Also, be advised I've lost a number of hand made bass poppers in that canal after a huge strike and splash and while I can't confirm this I'll bet there are/were at least one or maybe more alligator gar in those canals.
Here's one from behind the 200 loop in Sept '07. Took us about 4 hours to catch this one. We fed A LOT of fish and this was the only one that wanted to visit with us!
Sorry, but that's sort of like the CARMAX horse add commercial where they guy says sorry but we won't sell you that since something is just not right there ... LOL
That's how I wanted to post it..just couldn't remember how!! She was scared to hold it up as it kept flipping around... Her twin wouldn't even think of getting that close unless it was breaded and on a plate!!
