How is Fort Wilderness in the summer?

In 2005 we took our oldest to WDW for his Bday in July. We stayed at the Contemporary because that is his favorite hotel. It was HOT and crowded and I vowed not to go back in the summer again.

Now my second child's bday is in late August. We have an RV now and I booked a trip for his bday. Am I going to regret it? Does the shade and woods make it feel any cooler? I have always stayed at the Fort in the winter and Fall so I am not sure what to expect.

As long as you have A/C in your RV you'll be ok in there, but Florida in summer is still Florida in summer. Trees might keep out direct sun but the air is still muggy, muggy, muggy!

End of August is better as far as crowds..or at least it was when we used to go in August. While it's just as hot as July..it is reported to have a bit less rain. Although it is VERY hot. It does rain almost each afternoon..thunderstorm, and frankly it cools things down. We usually enjoy the resort during the day and go to parks at about 4:30...many people are leaving when we are arriving..the heat of the day is past..and while warm it's more enjoyable at the parks in the evening. Usually included a light/fireworks type show..and it made the evening nice.
We have friends that used to go in July..and there were tons of Brazilian tour groups..don't ask me why..but it's the truth. Terrible lines in the parks. We would go in late August and didn't find this. Also the Florida schools are open by that time, so that also might be why it's a bit less crowded the last couple of weeks of August. While it's a hot time of year..it's also great that parks are open so late. You can enjoy all the night time activities. Enjoy the pool during the day.

Unless you like it humid, hot, heat index at 100 to 120, don't camp without air in your unit. It will be dog days at the park, if you survive that, you will need a good nights rest to face the next day.

We camped last August. It was not bad. The temps were hot during the day but we had a fan which kept it cool. I should mention we tent camped. The nights were cool and about 7:15 in the morning it started to get really warm, but usually by that time we were on our way to one of the parks. I thought it was great, I don't think you will regret it at all. In fact we are going back this August again.

Do you run your AC all day long or just when you return to your camper? We haven't used ours yet.

In FL in the summer, I'd just leave it running. When you're outside all day at the parks, by the time you get back you'll want a nice cool place to relax. I wouldn't want to have to wait for it to cool down!
