How is Avis ‘select your car’?

Hi everyone, we usually rent through Alamo with their Skip the Line and love selecting our own car, but the rates are 🤯 right now.

Looks like UT has a great rate through Avis, and I’m hoping to figure out a way to sign up for preferred so we can skip the counter at MCO.

I saw that Avis will send you a text when you land of the available vehicles, and you can select the vehicle you want from the app, it tells you the car location, and then you go get it?

Seems too good to be true LOL…. We would still rather peruse the line of vehicles and hop in the one we like, but this sounds pretty good and it’s not worth the extra Mickey money to go with Alamo right now.

Thanks for your advice!!

This was in January, so maybe things have changed, but even though I’m preferred at Avis and I booked an awesome rate via UT, I had to go to the desk by the cars. It was a short line, but the guy in front of me went to his assigned car and it wasn’t there, so he had to walk all the way back so it took a few minutes. Still, it was pretty quick. I didn’t get any text or anything via the app, though.

Haven't used that particular program but have always been satisfied with Avis. I belong to whatever their 'club' is called and don't have to wait in any lines at the counter. I just go directly to my assigned vehicle.

Was this the first time you rented thru Avis?

The first I rented thru Avis I had to go to the counter and when I asked why since I'm a member she said they require you to go to the counter if its your first rental with them to verify your identity.
After that I was able to skip the counter. Avis works a little different than Alamo for picking your car, when you arrive at the airport the app recognizes that your there and will offer you a car to select.
If you don't like that car keep refreshing and another available car pops up once you see the car you like you just reserve it. Then you just go to your car location. It's like your getting to pick the car you want but you don't have to physically walk in the garage and pick it. My experience is just at the Orlando airport so I'm not sure other airports work the same.

When I had to go to the counter the first time, the lady at the counter didn't give me any options to pick which car I wanted.

Thanks- I wonder if I could go to my local Avis to get identity-verified so we can skip the counter in Orlando 🤔

Was this using a discounted reservation booked with UCT? I have done Avis preferred + UCT discounted reservations for 3 trips so far in 2022. Each time I land the app recognizes that I'm at MCO and gives me a list of cars to choose from. Each time I select the car and there's an error because of the discount and I have to visit the desk for them to assign me a car. 😢

That was discussed in another thread recently, but I don't recall which rental company it was about. Some brands/locations let you do that while others do not. I would certainly call the place where you want to try to do that before wasting your time driving there only to find out they won't let you do this. Typically, the first time you rent from a company they have to verify you have a valid driver's license and input various things to their computer system. You can then skip the counter for future rentals.

Holyrita,
How did you connect your avis preferred to the UCT reservation? Thanks!
