We are 10 weeks away from the Wine and Dine. Today someone told me that I should be doing a significant amount of core training at this point. I haven't done any!!

It's not something you should cram on.

Core training is one of the critical strength exercises that an athlete should work on. What is core work? Well it is not your daddy's situps.

Think work like planks, side planks, single legged squats, standing cable curls on one leg; essentially any work where you have some instability and are performing weight work.

Your weights do not need to be heavy in these workouts but you should have a full range of motion.

I would not worry but would start incorporating some core work into your weekly routines. A strong core will help prevent injuries over time.

As you incorporate the core work into your workouts, you will be amazed at how good you feel especially as the distances increase.

Doing a power yoga class is a great way to get core work in, and you also get plenty of the stretching and strengthening that runners needs in their hips and legs.

The most important thing you should be doing is running (or Gallowalking, or walking, or however you plan to get to the finish line)

Is cross training and strength training important? of course, and you should incorporate into your routine like coach said. but i'm a very firm believer in "miles make champions"

Core training is extremely important. In just about anything athletic you do in life from running to hitting a baseball your core is the source of your power. If all you are doing to train is run you are leaving a lot on the table and increasing your chance of injury.

I agree with John about Yoga. I incorporate "hot yoga" as part of my cross-training. Have done that made me more adaptable to this humid weather and less back pain as I am putting more miles in.
Happy training everyone!!
