Tuesday morning June 1st we arrived at the Indy airport to leave for Arizona...then onto Disneyland later in our 2 week trip. We arrived at 4:45AM for our 6:45 flight. Walk up to counter to be told flight was canceled. When I checked in online on Monday it said flight was overbooked. They said cancellation was due to weather in Detroit the night before and flight crew would not have adequate rest. Understandable. They could get us out Wednesday..which would make us miss graduation. Lady worked and found flight out of Cincinnati at 9:45AM arriving within 15 minutes of original flight. She tried to get supervisor to approve taxi fare from Indy to Cincy which was a big NO. Said we would get a car and drive---knew no time to get to park and fly hotel, pick up car and drive to Cincy. The agent was going to change return flight to Cincy for no charge. Very polite and nice person at desk. She got us seats on Cincy flight but not good ones.
Go to rental car counters. This had been Indy 500 weekend so not many cars left and not many for 1 way rental. We paid $274 for a Cadillac (ONLY CAR BESIDE 12 PASSENGER VAN) and drove to Cincinnati. This was our choice and at this point only one.
Arrive at Cincy and wait a long time to get to agent. She said 2 parents can't be in emergency exit row...our boys were in rows 3-5 in front of that but not together. She calls gate agent who gets 3 of us together and hubby in emergency row. Once again she was very nice.
Arrive in Phoenix exhausted, not happy about extra money on car rental (my 12 day rental in Phoenix is ONLY $234 for FULL SIZE). Send Delta an email. I had remained calm and understanding through this whole adventure...which amazed my husband and boys. Two days later after I explained we had NOT been notified by email or phone of cancellation they send us 4 $50 vouchers. Since it was a weather delay they didn't have to do. I was very impressed.
Just glad we arrived safely. Not happy about extra $274 not budgeted but now have $200 for future trip. Would I rather have the money in cash towards rental expenses yes, but I am not complaining!
Good news is had Chevy Impala in Phoenix. Sticky gas pedal so I exchanged car at Alamo...ended up with Premium Chrysler 500 and satellite radio for my super cheap price.
Think if people get flight canceled or issues on trips with cars, etc. thing to do is remain calm. It wouldn't help to yell at agent. It is not there fault and I don't think they would have done what they did if I had yelled.
