How Hot Is It Really in Late August?

With the whole free dining thing coming out and with us having tickets left over a trip late this summer could be pretty cheap and it is hard to pass up right now. We could really use another vacation and my DS is begging to go back.

I don't really care for the heat and the hottest time we have been to WDW was in mid-May. We do live in Missouri so we are used to hot and humid summers but exactly how hot are we talking about at Disney? Is it about the same as Missouri or even hotter?

My kids will be 4 and 17 months so I don't want the heat to be too much for them. We would do early mornings and spend lots of time at the pools, etc.. trying to cool off.

It can be brutal in July, August and September. I live in the a hot and humid climate so it doesn't bother me if I am here or at WDW. I only go to the parks in the evening or night when traveling those months. All other times I just enjoy my resort pool or one of the waterparks.

You do realize that to utilize the free dining you have to buy new tickets?

It's very hot & very humid. I personally love it. I love feeling the air stick to my skin like a super-warm down comforter. But, I know I'm in a definate minority with that.

It's hot & humid enough that the second you walk outside, your glasses fog over.

That said, if you use your head & take precautions, a great time can still be had, no matter how hot it is. I can't speak for taking kids as young as yours during the summer tho, as the youngest I ever bought in the heat season was 10 yo.

Late August is one of my favorite times to go.

Don't you only have to buy a 1 day ticket as part of the package?

I used to live in SW Missouri - those summers were downright pleasant compared to July and August in central Florida. The temperatures aren't all that different, but it's MUCH more humid.
Best to plan on taking lots of pool/shower breaks during the afternoon and return to the parks in the later afternoon/early evening.

We were there August 2000 and yes it was HOT!! but we had a great time. We got there early, and left for a break by 2:00 most days. We only had heat problems twice. Both were with my dad who has medical issues.
#1-The playground in MGM was way too hot and by 10 am he was so overheated we had to leave the park (he was in playgroung about 1/2 hr with my 1yo.) If I had known about the first aid area I would have made him go there. He was truly near heatstroke.
#2-The other problem was one MK day he tried to go too long w/o water and sitting and was almost weak and dizzy, he got a water, rode the boat around Tom Sawyers Island and felt much better, well enough to stay for the afternoon parade before our planned early departure.
SO...drink a lot of water and rest when needed. It's till Disney and still great even if it's HOT!!!

Weve gone the last week in August twice and are going back again this year. I would go that week every year if I could work it out that way.

Yes it is very HOT! But you are in and out of AC for a lot of the rides/shows. We go early mornings, usually take a midday break to swim and shower, then return to the parks in the evening.

I have to say I prefer going that week than going in December. I would rather be very hot, than a little cold. Plus packing is so much easier. In August you only need shorts and bathing suits. In the winter you need all sorts of clothes including jackets. Once in December we were wearing winter jackets and mittens and were still cold waiting for the parade....Give me 95 degrees any day! ;)

If you do not like the heat, and the hottest time you visited was in mid May, you probably will be miserable in August.

For reference, it is usually in the upper 80's - low 90's by 9:00 in the morning. Add in the humidity, and it usually will feel even warmer. The humidity in Missouri is a lot less than in Florida.

Editted to add: For reference, I live about 45 minutes west of the parks.

I went for the first time in late August last year and to be honest, I didn't think it was any hotter than the other three times I went, which were twice in mid May and once in late May. I think I was just "lucky" and hit really hot spells in my May trips, but still, August was do-able. In fact, I'm going back in late August again. I think that it was about 92-95 degrees each day I was there and yes, very humid. But as long as you rest like you plan to, I say go for it! :thumbsup2

We were there the end of last August and it was in the mid to high 90s. But really, to me... anything over 85 feels the same. To keep cool, go to parks early on, do an outside ride or short ride (Dumbo, Peter Pan), then an airconditioned sit down show or ride (Philharmagic, Haunted Mansion). Drink lots of water and you'll be fine. We usually head back by 1pm and hang at the pool and return after dinner. At night, it's downright chilly at 90! Have fun and enjoy yourselves because the parks are quiet. We'll be there this year too!

I was there with my 4 year old the last week of August last year too. I also didn't think it was as bad I thought it would be. My DS did great. I did have a stroller for him with a Ray Shade to add extra shading. I made sure he drank a lot of water. I would be a bit more worried about your 18 month old. And I too wonder if I was just "lucky". It think it was low 90's every day but a week or 2 earlier it was in the high 90's. I'm planning another trip this year the last week of Aug.

Don't forget a rain cover for your stroller and use it everytime you go into a ride. You never know when the rain may come. Here's a link to the Ray Shade

The only place worse than Orlando in July is Maine in winter.

It is hot as hell. I'm not kidding. It's awful.

I definately agree with the above poster who said they can't go to the parks except at night.

Las Vegas is more comfortable than Orlando. Mexico City is more comfortable. There's something about crowds + brutal sun + 105 degrees that equals torture.

Go during fall, winter or spring. :thumbsup2

We live in Maine and I would take the cold winter anyday before I would go back to Orlando in September. We went last year in the middle of September and while we were sitting waiting for Fantasmic to begin (which was about 8:00 at night) the sweat was running down my back down my shorts. When I touched my arm my skin was all sticking and it was really miserable feeling like that....it is way too hot for me. Maybe I'm just used to the cold living up North. I would rather put on a coat and get warm than sit with the sweat pouring off me when I'm not even moving. That said....if someone asked me to go to Disney this September to get the free dining they are offering, I would be there in a heartbeat! You forget real easy just how hot it is when you are in such a great place as Disney.

HOT! HOT! HOT!! Just plan on spending 1/2 to 3/4 days at the parks and utilize the pools OFTEN!!! I have already warned my girls about the temps we will experience!!! They don't seem phased ... yet!!! :stir:

The crowds were less than what we experience in late April/early May. We went at the END of August last summer.

I live in Miami and August is ridiculously HOT down here but in Orlando it's HOTTER since it's inland and doesn't have the ocean next door to cool it down.If you're outside for a couple of minutes you start to glisten from the heat and humidity.Typical highs in august would be like 91-95, with humidity, feels like 104-107.

We went last year in late August and my DH said never again. My DD6 got sick, I don't know if it was food poisoning or heat exhaustion and my DS4 got heat rash under his arms and near his sock line. And Yes, we took breaks and Yes, we pushed water and popsicles at them. If we do go back at that time of the year, I will wait until the kids are older.
