TRIP DETAILS: Putting the "Dad" back in Family Vacation
Who: Jen (HEY :wave2:, that's me!!!), the mum, 27 years old (next month), full time college student going for my Pre-K thru Grade 2 teaching certification. I am currently working part time as a substitute at the local elementary schools and my daughter's preschool, and as a per diem youth shelter residential counselor. In my free time I love photography, scrapbooking, party planning and spending time with my two favorite people!
Shamus, the dad, 30 in April. He is a HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) Technician, been with the same company for the last 6 or 7 years, occasionally does an HVAC side job. Enjoys all things xBox, currently playing Assains Creed - the Brotherhood and just picked up Dead Space 2 tonight. He works hard and deserves a vacation he can enjoy... (<--- that's a teaser right there!!! ;) )
Madilynn, our number one girl! She will turn 4 in September. She loves learning, playing with her dress-up, helping Momma bake, and prolonging bedtime! She is currently in a preschool program 3 days a week (while Momma is in class) and has made some friends pretty easily. She would like to one day reside in the suite inside of Cinderella's Castle - and she'd like her mom to live there too! *Her name is Madilynn, sounds like Madi-lynn, not Mada-line.

What: A Disney vacation - duh! This time, all three of us will be in attendance (<--- another potential teaser, maybe a mini TR from Madi & I's trip last October).

Where: Pop Century. Our first family trip we did CBR and really liked it - but we just never spend time at the resort and I don't see the difference in Mods and Values. Madi & I stayed at Pop in October and we really fell in love. I don't know why we didn't instantly love CBR the way we loved POP, but for me, POP wins, hands down!

When: Saturday, November 12 through Saturday, November 19, 2011. (As of 01/26/11, we all know how things can change).

Why: Disney is the happy place for 3/4 of our family. ...WAIT - three-fouths? YES - three-fourths! I know Shamus secretly enjoys Disney, maybe more than just a smidge. So you figure, Madi & I make up 66.67% of the family and our happiness level is 100% while at Disney. This leaves Shamus with a potential of 33.33% happiness to share. SO if Shamus gives just 8.33% of his happiness meter toward a Disney vacation, then we're at 75%. (Did I mention I got an A- in Statistics last semester!). Better question - WHY NOT?! :confused3 *Also, we got a 35% off room rate and shaved a few dollars off the cost - free QSDP would be an even better deal, so we'll wait..........*

How: As it stands I would like to get a direct Jet Blue flight from Boston to Orlando, departing around 10:00AM, no later than Noon, no earlier than 8:00AM. We're planning to surprise Madi with this trip and I think we'll spring it on her the morning of. We're about an hour and a half from the airport, so surprising her at 3:00AM may lack the luster I am envisioning... <--- MUCH more talk about this down the road!

Now you might be asking yourself, "this lady has over 9 months before this trip even starts, 8 months to have it paid off, and a hundred and one things to do between now and then - why the heck is she writing a pre-trippie? And why so dang early?! --- Well I'll tell you why - cause I can and I need and want to! I've got a very sparse population of Disney lovers in my life and I am going to rely heavily on my friends and experts here on the DIS to help me out and guide me on what will certainly be a memorable family trip!

COMING UP NEXT: A VISUAL INTRODUCTION and THE FIRST BUMP IN THE ROAD

I hope you will join me and not leave me typing to myself at odd hours of the night... I bid you goodnight and will catch up with you sooner than later! :goodvibes - Jen

You know who we are and a little background on what we do/enjoy - so let's put some faces to those names!

This is a picture from apple picking in October

So that is us, our cute little family of three :goodvibes

I may or may not be talking to myself, but at least I am polite and introduce my family to myself

If you are reading along - stay tuned for how this trip evolved from a Bahamian cruise to an 8-Day Disney World vacation!

Ok, heyyyy!!! You know I'm in!

We used to stay at CBR all the time when I was growing up, and I loved it. I haven't been back since they re-did the rooms though, so I'm not sure if that'll ruin some of the feeling that I used to get there (like I think that it might.)

POP was a bit overwhelming for me, but I'm sure it'd be a completely different experience with a kiddo around!

Everyone definitely has their resort preferences! I say, as long as you're happy wherever you're staying (and, how could you NOT be - you're at Disney?) then whooooo cares!

I can't wait to hear more and help you plan! I know you guys are going to have another fantastic trip! (You know, except your last two trips, we were both there at the same time, and this year, I'll be in school. That's not so fantastic, but I would not be hurt if you wanted to make a Heather-on-a-stick for some pictures! :rolleyes1)

:cheer2:

Hey there - dropped over from the November 2011 thread...as we are matching trip dates and possibly hotels (will upgrade if we get Free Dining). I'm also originally from Mass (near Springfield - Agawam to be precise).

The problem with starting a PTR so early is you run out of things to talk about...I know from experience...but hey...I'll gladly help be excited for your upcoming trip! :cool1:

And...Hi HeatherBelle. Met her on the bus from AKL on our LAST trip. The DIS is a small world!

We are going almost the same time. (November 10 - 19) We are also staying at Pop Century. I'll be keeping an eye out on your pre-trip report!

Oh my goodness - my first trip without you?! This is tragic, and yet it hadn't even occurred to me yet!

CBR rooms are really nice, not overly done up in Nemo, subtle accents throughout. POP just works for us with a little lady!

Note to self: construct Heather-on-a-stick for TR

I will be wishing you luck on your FD! We like the QSDP so will likely stay put if it is offered, currently have a 35% off pin code applied. I spent 4 years in South Hadley while my mother attended Mount Holyoke College.

I can usually always come up with some kind of something to keep a PTR moving, but time will tell!

So we were all there the same time in October? We did AK with HeatherBelle as well as a really cute photo shoot on GF property.

Thanks for reading along!

Thanks for tagging along!

I always get a little sad when I see someone that is going the same time as me, but for longer... enjoy those extra two days! Warm the place up for me and scare off the crowds too if you please!

Every year includes a vacation. 2006: I went to Disney with the family I nanny'd for - it was my first Disney experience and I got bit, HARD! 2007: I went to Nebraska in March and then Madi was born in September and Shamus took the first two weeks of her life off . 2008: We visited my mom in Nebraska. They have a world famous zoo that is AMAZING (but you notice I haven't been quick to get back to it... there is a Natazu I much prefer!) - but that is about it, my mom, sister and brother, a handful of friends, and a zoo... 2009: the three of us take our first "real" family vacation to Disney and stay at CBR. We loved it - I loved it - Madi loved it. Dad, not so much... he had a great time, but when it came time to talk about 2010he had no interest in returning to Disney.

Shamus: it will be the same trip
Me: every trip is a new trip - with new experiences
Shamus: it will be the same trip
Me: then Madi & I will go enjoy a mother-daughter trip
Shamus: that's lame

Now I know I may be painting a poor picture of Shamus here, but it is the picture he chose to have me draw. So, 2010: Madi and I went back to Disney this time for Halloween, and had a blast! A couple bumps here and there (I cried to myself over dinner with Cinderella. Not happy joyous tears, but sad, over-tired, here-alone tears) - but we had a great time, just my girl and me :lovestruc . SO this brings us to talks of 2011 and what the family vacation would be... or wouldn't be.

Early talks would have sounded like this:
Shamus: we're not going back to Disney
Me: what would you like to do?
Shamus: a cruise would be nice
---pause---
Me: what are your thoughts on a Disney cruise?
Shamus: show me.

So we research, watch videos, read posts, etc. Shamus could do a cruise, a Disney cruise. Now that I've got him on board I let it slide for a month or so, then ---

Me: What if we spent three days before the cruise at Disney World?
Shamus: that would be okay (it probably didn't come out like that, but that is how my ears heard it!)
Me: let me punch some numbers...

That plan stands for a while and then I come out with it...

Me: I don't think I can do a cruise!
Shamus: what do you mean?
Me: being out there, in the middle of the water? With a small child - ugh I just don't like thinking about it.
Shamus: you're being irrational
Me: what about Titanic?
Shamus: *looks at me like this:  * really Jen? Titanic?
Me: I know that is irrational, but like some kind of emergency could happen and we'd be stuck in the middle of the Caribbean Sea!
Shamus: ...then what?
Me: well I thought maybe we could drive down to Disney, spend 2 or 3 days driving down. You know really enjoy the drive and stop off along the way as we'd like. We could rent a car for the week. Then stay at Disney for 5 nights or so and turn around and come home, driving back but without the stops maybe.
Shamus: can we get a Malibu? (his current *family* dream car)
Me: I don't see why not!

So there we have it - I am going back to Disney and Dad is along for the ride! Then it hits me - do I really want to drive. Geez with the cost of renting a car, paying for gas, paying for meals and paying for hotels... So I let another week or so slide and then I say it:

Me: I don't think driving is really our best option... it is going to cost quite a bit. At least $150 on hotels, $200 or so for the car, and who knows what gas prices will be next winter. What if we hit a freak storm?
Shamus: ya, I was wondering what the costs would be.
Me: Oh, there is some really good priced out of Hartford (about 2-3 hours away from us. Boston is our preferred, but it too is 2 hours away). We could drive out there, spend the night at hotel and fly out the next day...
Shamus: okay (again, this probably wasn't his reply - but we'll go with it!)
Me: maybe we could tack on a few extra days at Disney since we won't be driving. Then we don't have to feel rushed to do it all and see it all in such a short period of time...
Shamus: I want some good meals. Like a nice breakfast.
Me: I'll go look at what they offer!

Me: You know, I think we would be better off with a nice dinner instead of a breakfast - do you really want to be off and running after eating a full breakfast? Maybe on our last day a breakfast...
Shamus: Ya, I could do a dinner.

Woo Hoo! :cool1: So there you have it. What started out as his dream cruise vacation was quickly turned into my...err... our dream extended Disney vacation!

*My fingers and eyes are tired, so I will be back by the weekend to fill you in on that first wrench Shamus has so graciously thrown into MY plans... Thanks for reading along :goodvibes

That's it, I'm in! That post was hilarious!! Best of luck to you with your planning! Maybe I'll take away some tips for planning our upcoming trip.

Looks like things moved up by about three weeks. Nothin' bad about that!
