Our family will be going on a 7 night western cruise in September. AS allways I am thinking allready of what I am packing and wondering HOW FORMAL???? My DD has several formals (from all the school dances she is a Senior next year and has 3 formals a year!! Yeah add that up....LOL) anyway do we go that formal????? Or is a dressier dress for myself and her and shirts and Ties for my DH and DS allright? I think long Formals will be a MAJOR pain to pack any help on this one????

You will see everything from long, elaborate ball gowns to sequined cocktail dresses to church clothes. There will be men in suits with ties, men in tuxedos, and men in tuxedos with tails.

Honestly, on our cruise, there were several long formals. I wore a sequined top and a floor-length black skirt. Those rolling garmet bags are the "only way to go."

I'm cruising on August 24th on the Magic.

On formal night I am wearing a long sequin and chiffon gown. DH and DS will both be in tuxes.

On semi formal night I will be in an off the shoulder black lace top and chiffon tea length skirt. DH will be in either tux or suit (more than likely the latter.) DS will not join us that night.

For Palo's I have a very dressy black pantsuit and DH will wear at minimum a sport coat and slacks.

The beauty of chiffon is that if you pack it wrapped in a couple of dry cleaning bags, with tissue in the skirt, and then hang it up in a steamy room for a day, any wrinkles it picked up in transit will fall right out.

Dodie, the rolling garment bags your talking about, are they the ones you roll up and then unroll to pack? Something about getting the air out to make things smaller? My DD said something about seeing them somewhere, if they are what your talking about where did you get them? i have seen similar things on infomercials but you suck the air out for storing big bulky things. Can you let me know what your talking about and where you found them? Thanks

Belle,

I think the rolling garment bag that Dodie was talking about is a piece of luggage. It is a garment bag with wheels. Very handy. My DH picked one up on sale from $450 down to $89. I had been looking on line and most of those were around $150 - $180.

By the way, Dodie, I always have liked your German Shepard picture. We are on our 2nd, this one straight from Germany. Just gotta love those dogs!:)

Yes. I meant rolling a garment bag. I think they're sometimes called wardrobers or suiters.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about (hope this works):

iluvorlando: We have three GSD's, a white 8-year old (Opal), a red/black 5-year-old (Ruby-pictured), and a black and red 7-month-old (Maya). Ruby does search and rescue work with my husband and Maya is in puppy training to hopefully someday do the same. Amazingly smart dogs - but basically just big lap puppies!

Belle,

I just got off the 06/01 Magic. On formal night I wore a floor length gown, DH wore a tux, DS (6) wore a tux and DD (3) wore a formal dress. I wondered if we were going to feel weird being that dressed up - especiall DS. We didn't feel weird at all. And the pictures turned out great! I wouldn't have felt weird in something less formal either. You truly do see everything and everybody fits in. I might have felt underdressed in a normal church dress (at least one of my church dresses.)

Just wear what you want. If you don't want to mess with bringing formals, don't worry about it. And DH will be fine in a suit and tie.

Hope this helps!

on the subject of tuxes...does Disney rent them onboard or do you have to rent one for the whole week? or do most of the men just buy one?

DH and I want him to wear one but it would only be for this once and so we don't want to buy one. But we don't want to spend the money on renting one for a whole week as well.

Any help is appreciated.

We're renting from Cruiseline formal. Disney does NOT rent on board, you need to make the arrangements in advance with Cruise line formal and they'll have it delivered to your cabin. I comparred prices, and they're about the same as renting locally for a weeks rental. The few extra $$ is worth it to not have to lug it downt here and back.

Two of my teens DD18 and DD14 wore their long formal homecoming dresses on formal night. They looked beautiful and did not feel out of place. This year my DD18 is wearing her long formal prom gown on formal night and my DD14 is wearing her 8th grade dance dress. Get as much use out of those dresses as you possible can!!! On semi-formal nights they wear cocktail length dresses.
