How far out do we need to book

We were wondering how far out we need to book value studios at Animal Kingdom Lodge and Boardwalk Villas for December 2014?

We'd like to see what deals Disney may be offering for that time of year at their other Resorts before committing to renting a DVC studio. However we are not sure there will be availability by the time Disney releases that information.

An additional question: Could we book Old Key West in August 2014 for December 2014? If we wait till Disney releases discount information about December 2014 and there is nothing we'd be interested in, like free dining in Dec 2014, we're concerned that Old Key West might even be booked up by that point. So we wondering what the experts think about that option as well.

December is popular with DVC members. For a value studio at AKV or standard at BWV, you need to book at 11 months. OKW would be pushing it by waiting until August, I would book at 7 months.

I agree, you will need to book at the 11 month window for both of those catagories. So you need to be ready to book those rooms January 2014.

It may also depend on when you are looking to book in Dec. The first week or the holiday? You need to book right at eleven months out. If you wait for ten months and three weeks, you might be too late for the value villa. If you book the preferred/non-BW view villa at the BWV, you could also wait a few weeks. But the first week of Dec is the most requested week for DVC members. OKW, you might get a few weeks out because it has more availability (but not near Hospitality House area).

August is going to be too late.

We are wanting to go the week of Dec 7-14 of 2014. (That's the week of our 10th anniversary). This may seem like a silly question, but if we do decide to try and get a DVC rental can we book starting January 1, or do we need to wait until exactly 365 days out from our vacation?

We really love OKW (we stayed there on our honeymoon), we just thought we might try a new resort. I know we probably chose the hardest resorts to get

You can book up to 7 nights at 11 months from date of arrival.

Booking on line for 11 months out will start exactly at 8 a.m. Eastern on January 7 for Dec 7 to 14. You are looking at trying to book two of the four hardest categories of rooms to get, AKV value or BWV standard (the other two are AKC club level and BLT standard). You are also looking to book at the very highest DVC demand time of the year. To have a real chance of getting AKV value or BWV standard, the person who is gone to reserve will need to be on line at exactly 8 a.m. on Jan 7 because what you want could be gone completely by 8:05.

DW and I have been every year since '93 during the 2nd week of Dec. We book our home resort (OKW) at the 11 month mark; 95% of the time we are able to transfer to another resort at 7 months depending on what we are doing that stay. For the times we can not transfer we just enjoy our home resort base for the trip.

One other option you might want to consider, is a DCL. DW and I have gone on our 15, 20, & 25th anniversaries.

Keep in mind that if you do decide to rent from a DVC member they need to "own" at the resort you want to stay at to book at the 11 month window. So, lets say I own at AKV only and I call to get you a value standard and they are already gone, I can not then switch and ask for BWV because I don't own there. You might find a member who owns both resorts and is willing to rent out a reservation at either resort.
