how far in advance must you cancel a car reservation?

I have a reservation at National for 5 days, starting at the airport. We'll be vacationing with relatives who are driving down from GA. They say that they will get there before our flight gets in, check in, then come and get us at the airport. Knowing how they are (ie: late), I'm a little concerned with their timing. They plan on leaving GA early in the morning, and our plane gets in around 4. Anyhoo, i plan on calling them when we awaken that morning to see exactly where they are in their travels before wwe board our flight. Can you cancel a car ressie on the same day or do you need to give 24 or 48 hours notice? Thanks

I believe you have to give 24 hrs notice or you are charged some sort of fee.

I cancelled thrifty and dollar the day before I left. I got a good deal with Alamo.

Did you book through Emerald Club? What size vehicle? I've heard they only charge for larger vehicles (vans, convertibles, etc). If you booked through Emerald Club, they have your credit card # on file to charge if they choose.
