How far do you drive to get to Disneyland Resort?

Our drive is about 11-13 hours depending on traffic. Usaully we break it up and stay at a hotel half-way. I love rode trips so to me unless I find one heck of a deal on airfare we are driving. The drive is part of the experience for us. We never rush and stop wherever we feel the need.

That does not sound bad distance wise, at all. Matter of fact, it can take almost as long @8-10 hours by train, from Northern Ca. to Anaheim. Coming down, it was a bit over 8 hours, not bad at all. Returning though, it took @ ten hours, because that morning somewhere in So.Ca. someone tried to beat the train, and lost.
I enjoyed my train trip, so I did not mind it taking longer than by car, or of course, plane.
I agree, that the trip is apart of the experience. Road trips can be, and should be fun, and interesting. And hopefully will always be a good one, as well. It is important to not feel rushed, and to stop and take little breaks, or larger ones for that matter. Good for the circulation, don't ya know. :)
Have an awesome trip and visit to Disneyland! :goodvibes

Another Portlander here, it's about 16 hours, when we make the trip to SoCal we usually stop in Stockton or Sacramento, it's really boring after that and it's good to be well rested.

I would never suggest the train, I did this back in 2001 OMG 36 hours, we hit a car, had a stoaway, someone had a hard attack, on and on - it was horrible and I will never come close to a train again - granted you can have a lot of things happen in a car or delays on a plane, I just can't do the train!

Good deals can sometimes be had on Alaska Airlines, which makes the cost a little more reasonable to fly.

Anyway you look at, I'm just thrilled to be going to DL!!

I live about 20 mins east of San Diego and its about a 2.5 hr drive to Disneyland. Usually for a day trip to DL, we wake at 5, make it there around 8 or 830 and leave at park closing. I do all the driving and its fine. I don't sleep much anyways lol

Personally, I would only drive 16 hrs if I were staying a few days at the resorts.

My family's currently sitting in an airport; our flight was canceled because of some plane malfunction. :scared: So, we're waiting to hear back. It's already been twenty minutes since we got off the plane and we've heard nothing.

We're planning on going to Disneyland in October, and by then we'll live in the Southern Washington/Portland area. We've estimated the drive to Disney to be around sixteen hours or so. Which sounds like a really long drive, but we don't want to fly if we don't have to. So, how far do you guys drive, if you drive? Would it be worth it to you to drive for sixteen hours? We love the idea of going when we want, getting to take our own car, and saving money. Just looking for opinions... and, I'm bored sitting here. :rotfl:

Thanks for any opinions!

I live in the Salem, OR area. We will be driving down in October to save money. (we had a WDW package booked, but I just can't justify spending that much money this year). We will take two days to drive down and two to drive back however I have done the drive in one shot before. It took about 13 hours with no stopping aside from the restroom.
To me it's sooooo worth the drive!:yay:

509.7 miles door to door. (via San Diego) 8-10 hrs, depending on what time we leave and traffic on the 5.

It takes me 6 hours to get to Disneyland. I love to drive there. It is a long and boring drive but just knowing I'm getting closer makes it fun!

My family and I travel to Disneyland from Portland Oregon by car about once a year, sometimes more :) We spread the drive over two days, the first day we drive from Portland to Harris Ranch Inn (near Coalinga CA) arriving there just in time for a nice dinner, and spend the night. Next morning we get up have a nice breakfast then drive the rest of the way and make it in time for lunch at Disneyland! As many have stated the drive back is the painful part as you don't have the excitement of going to Disneyland to carry you through the drive. So we usually drive the whole way home in one day!

When the kids were younger we listened to audio books during the drive to pass the time. It also helps keep 'em quiet!! We listened to all 7 Harry Potter books during these trips, made for an exciting time and plenty to talk about during the stops during the drive.

For this years trip, it'll just be the wife and I, we are celebrating our 20th anniversary, and we're planning on flying - we'll be staying for a week at the GCH!

We just did it from Corvallis Oregon- we stayed the night on the way down and on the way back, just off I-5 in Firebaugh at the Best Western Apricot Inn- nice and quiet, relaxed hotel- great pool!

OK that just sounds like a pleasant motel. ***apricot inn*** nice.

DH and I live 6 hours away from DLR.....we've made the drive the past 5 visits and we both agreed NEVER AGAIN!!!! LOL:rotfl2: It's long......tedious....and I5 is a very boring freeway.........

When I lived in San Jose (grew up there) that's how I felt too! Then I moved away and thought "I lived THAT (relatively) close and thought it was so far away????" :)

...why not stop off in san francisco and enjoy the sighst. Makes the trip a little easier.

$$$$$

And SF isn't right off 5 so it takes time, too.

I'm from CA, and I have family all over, and even if I just choose one person to visit, it takes so much time and doesn't seem to add enjoyment (they want me to stay longer, I wish they'd just come to DLR with us).

In any case, we'll definitely be discussing the pro's and con's of both! Well, and taking a train, too. That sounds interesting.

Thanks for all your opinions!

The train is indeed interesting! I've only gone from Seattle to San Jose, and that was a solid 24 hours. Spent an hour sitting in the trainyard just south of the Seattle station b/c there was something going on on a track or something like that.

The way back home, it was delayed several hours...every little delay along the way causes a BIG effect down the line, so by the time it got to San Jose it was rather delayed.

I have friends who were coming home from CA to Seattle back in '01 or so (hey, maybe the same train as the other poster!) and it was 24 hours LATE getting home...yikes.

When I took the train, it was b/c I was 7 months pregnant and scared to fly. So my dad got me a ticket and a roommette. The room not only gives you a place to sleep, but it also causes you to be a first class passenger, giving you FOOD (very important for me at that time) and access to the special lounge.

But you have to have the extra vacation time, you have to have the proper mind-set that you're not looking at the clock every hour, and you have to be OK with being bashed into the walls as you make your way down the aisles as the train moves.

And...if you're 7 months pregnant, I would try to get a room with a bathroom (NOT the 2 person roommette!) or just don't change out of your clothes, for alllll the trips you're going to take down the hallway. On the way back, my dad managed to charm them into moving me to an Accessible room, with the bathroom in the room, and I was infinitely happier there.

Anyway, I like the train, but it's $$$, takes much longer, and requires the right mindset (and it's good to either have the money in case of extreme delays to buy a plane ticket, or have even more vacation time on either end, just in case you are late).

While in college, I would drive from Tacoma to Santa Cruz in one shot...maybe 2 quick stops, and if I didn't need to take a nap at a rest area (gosh, how intelligent of me), I'd make it in 12 hours. No more, I tell you, no more! Not since I particularly frightening trip from Tacoma to the middle of Montana...now I hate driving long mountainous distances.

If I manage to forget that and drive again, we won't do it quickly. We'll take our time. And we won't stop at the Worst Super8 Ever (in Medford on Aviation Drive), where we were afraid to take off our shoes in our room b/c it was so dirty. :scared:

We're just SE of Phoenix so it's about 5.5 to 6 hours for us. It's really not too bad as long as the person in the passenger seat isn't alseep and snoring. lol My kid is pretty good at keeping me entertained though. It's about a 4 hr trip if we fly. I priced the train a year or two ago and I think I'll do that again now for our next trip.

We're driving from Denver. Total time in the car (round trip) is something like 33 hours (2271 miles).

We'll break the trip up - we'll drive to Albuquerque the first day and then on to the Grand Canyon for 3 nts. Then to DL for 6 nts @ GC. On the way home we're staying in Las Vegas for 3 nts. We'll probably drive straight through to get home that final day (11 hrs)

We could do it with just one night each way but we actually want to stop at the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. We're just breaking the drive to AZ down because we have a limited check in window at the B&B and we don't want to leave at 5 in the morning to be there on time. (can only check in between 3 and 5 pm) If we had any delays or DS needed more time out of his car seat we'd be hosed...

That's awful! I've ridden the train many times all across the country and always enjoyed it..although it does seem that every single night someone is wandering drunk...

I hate to drive now that we're older..DH tends to nod off and I have vision problems so can't drive distances and HATE to fly so only do it when I have to, so train is best bet for us. (I wish they'd open up the train route from New Orleans east again...long flight to WDW!)
