...in order to get to the race on time?

I'm planning to go to bed early the night before, but I'm still afraid of oversleeping! :scared1:

Does the monorail run early enough to get people to the race?

Monorail is running pretty early. I remember getting on it around 3:15am from the Poly and there was only about 12 other people on it when we transferred from the resort mono to the EPCOT monorail.

Any one have any experience leaving the Dolphin to get to the race start in time? I did notice that the last bus leaves at 4AM so I would assume I would leave the room a lot sooner than that.

I don't sleep well the night before anyway, so I'm on the 3AM bus.

I'm with Pat. I only manage to sleep about 1 or 2 hours at the most the night before the race, so I'm usually on the first bus out. Last year we were at the Poly and I was there before they opened up to start the monorail running for the full.

Getting there early also means if you forget to put your chip on your shoe, you have time to go back for it :rolleyes1

Oh Mel, did that really happen to you? I'm going to need to make a list of what to do the night before the race, because that is totally something I would do.

I am about in line with everyone else. I am a "I'd rather be an hour early than 5 seconds late" kinda' guy.

I'll probably be up between 2:15 -> 2:30 & progress from there. Most likely I will be on the 1st bus to leave SSR. Barring that I'll probably be at the start area by 4:00 at the latest.

I'm going to be at the Beach Club. I guess it's a bus from there? I thought about getting up at 3:00am and being to the bus by 4:00am thinking I'll likely not be getting any real sleep.
I'm a night before person so everything will be laid out and man-handled a million times to ensure I have everything ready. I have no experience this is my 1st Marathon.

We are staying at the Beach Club. Usually, we get to the bus area around 345 am. I don't know of a particular cut off time when you have to be in the corral per say :confused3 ....Disney says you have to be on a bus or monorail by 400am, bags must be checked by 500am and to expect a 20 minute walk to the start. Also, my experience---expect to wait at least 10 minutes for a port-o-potty before the race. There are port-o-pottys in the area before the 20 minute walk to the corrals and then there are more when you get down close to the corrals.

K I'm just going to throw this out there as an "alternative" plan for those who might have something go wrong and don't want to be freaking out come race morning.

The previous two years I've arrived VERY late to the area, and so its been important to sleep in as much as possible. Since I stayed at SoG, it was easy for me to set my alarm for 4:30, be in the car by 4:45, and drive through completely empty DW streets (that weren't closed yet) into Epcot parking by 5:00, with plenty of time to walk to the start by 5:30 and still have a half hour to warm up and stretch.

Now I'm not recommending this because you'll miss out on all the pre-race WISH fun and meetings. HOWEVER if you oversleep, or have something that delays you, do not think that "all is lost" just because you weren't at the bus by 4:00. The reason they say 4:00 is to try to get as many people to the start as EARLY as possible which makes traffic flow better. You could still catch a taxi as late as 5:00 without an issue, just a little added stress. For those who will be out on the course for upwards of 6 and 7 hours, being able to not be up for an additional 3, 4, or even 5 hours before the race starts might help the fatigue factor.

This is just an IDEA or OPTION though, everyone should be doing what makes them feel comfortable/prepared/excited! I personally am going to show up earlier this year to enjoy the prerace festivities I've missed out on previous years.

Remember people, most importantly, enjoy the race! You've earned it!

Matt, thanks for the info.

I just sent the final instructions to Randy. His response "WE HAVE TO BE ON THE BUS AT 4AM!" Not sure he's going to make it.

I actually figure if I AT the bus stop at 4 AM Disney will get me there. Does that sound reasonable. I mean I know there might be a line at 4!

'Fraid so. First race in 2006. Got all the way to EPCOT parking lot on the bus when Howard noticed I didn't have my chip. The driver took me back to the BCV...I called DH and he met the bus with my chip so I didn't have to go all the way back up to the room. Made it back in time to go to the corrals.

Howard saved it for me. I'm not sure when or if I would've noticed. Now I put my chip on my shoe as soon as I get it :-)

Wow, thank goodness you made it back in time! Thanks for sharing your story. I'm going to make sure I put my chip on my shoe the night before.

Any one have any experience leaving the Dolphin to get to the race start in time? I did notice that the last bus leaves at 4AM so I would assume I would leave the room a lot sooner than that.

i stayed at the Swan & Dolphin for my first ever half marathon in 2007.

i was nervous and anxious but did manage to get some sleep. being paranoid my original plan was to be up by 2:30am, and i ended up unconsciously turning off my alarm! i woke up at 3:20am in a panic and made it down to the lobby by 3:40am convinced that i wasn't going to make it.

there were a lot of people hanging out in running gear and i was worried that they were the tail end of the line waiting for the buses, but it turned out it was just groups meeting up. i boarded a waiting bus without any line and it was a quick trip over to the Epcot parking lot. i made it to the start area with a bunch of time to spare, in fact, i believe it was more than an hour before we even started walking to the start line! (...but i could be wrong, the whole experience was pretty surreal for me)

in 2008 i stayed at the Wilderness Lodge and it was definitely a much longer trip to the start, but i still ended up getting there and settled with a lot of time to spare.

so, i'd say so long as you're down in the lobby and ready to go by 3:45am you'll be just fine.

i'll be staying at the Swan & Dolphin this year too. :)

good luck!
chris

Thanks - its good to know that there will be buses from the Dolphin as well.

We'll be at Beach Club too. I'm sure my DH will be on the bus by 3:30.

I am trying to figure out what time to have my MIL meet me at the hotel so we can get there wihtout too much traffic hassle.
