How does tipping work

First time cruiser here and i don't know the propper way to tip and who to tip, when we tip or what we tip can anyone help please

The amounts are per passenger (regardless of age), per cruise based on the length of cruise -- not per stateroom or per day.

For 4 passengers on a 7-night cruise, that works out to a grand total of $305 for all four main tipped positions, if you follow the guidelines exactly.

For the four main tipped positions, our preference is to pay against our shipboard account at Guest Services. If you don't wait until the last minute, it's quick and easy. You get two receipts for each tip -- one to keep for your records, and one to put into envelopes that are provided to you on Thursday evening. Neither you nor the tip recipient has to bother with cash. It's accurate and secure. If you provided a credit card that gives reward point points, you earn points on the tips.

Remember that for crew members in the four main tipped positions, the tips are essentially their paycheck. They support their families back home. They work 7 days a week, often starting early in the morning.

The numbers in the DCL brochure and on the DCL website are the recommended tip amounts -- not the minimum recommended tip amounts. I think most of us treat DCL's recommended amounts as the minimums. But you should feel just as free to go lower as to go higher, based on the quality of the service you receive. (Considering the excellence of the people who work on the DCL ships, it much more likely that you'll want to adjust up instead of down.)

We'll make it easy. It is customary to give gratuities in recognition of service, which you will most likely be treated to in abundance aboard the ship. As a guideline, may we suggest the following:

To answer a few more of your questions. A few nights (I believe it is Wed or Thurs for the 7 day) before the end of your cruise you are given tip envelopes for the individuals who should be tipped. You can either put cash money in these or go to guest services and charge the amount to your on board account and they will give you a receipt to place in the envelope. Some people also do a combination of receipt from guest services and cash, it just depends on what you want to do. You then give these envelopes to the individuals on the last evening of the cruise.

Disney sets a recommended amout for tips, but it is up to you as the cruiser to determine how much you should tip. As stated before, I think most DISer's feel that the recommended amount is a minimum and I know we have always tipped more than the suggested amount. As an added extra bonus we also put in a phone card because many of the CM's live far from home and this allows them to call home to talk to their family.

What denominations of the phone cards have you used for tips? I have never bought them before.

We usually buy the ones from Sam's Club that come in a package. They basically come in number of minutes, i.e., 60 min, 120 min, and so on. It just depends on how much money you want to spend. The big thing to remember is to get the cards that say international on them because most of their families live outside of the US. Also, please remember that these phone cards are not in lieu of the regular cash tip, but as added extra bonus. We also use them around the ship for CM's that cannot take cash tips, such as the counselors in the kids club, concierge staff, and any other CM that we run into that we feel deserves a little extra.

In addition to the tips discussed above, there is an automatic 15% added to any "bar" orders whether alcoholic, sodas (not on package), or smoothies. You should also budget tips for baggage handlers ($1-2 per bag), Palo servers, room service ($1-2 per order), and any special services you might receive. DCL isn't one of those places where everyone has his/her hand out for a tip, but these few "extras" are customary. You should be aware that the 15% is automatically added to the bar order. This is divided among the bar staff at the end of the cruise. I've been told that any extra you add to a bar tab goes directly to that server.

We just returned (yesterday) from the 7 day. I charged the "suggested" tips, then added some extra cash to a couple of the envelopes. I have never seen such a huge "thank you" as I received from my server on Saturday morning! It is amazing that what may seem like a small amount to us can be a very big thing to someone who is supporting a family in a third world country.

I've been told different things from different servers re cash vs. charging the tips. Charging is easiest for me, and provides the servers with a secure form (they get a check from DCL reflecting the total of their charged tips.) They do get the full amount--DCL does not impose any sort of handling charge or anything. However, they also get a yearly accouting, similar to our W-2 forms. Whether they pay taxes based on this amount depends on their home country. They do not pay any US taxes as the ship is licensed in the Bahamas, which has no income tax.

And the most aggravating tip is on bottled water!! That's the only one that bugs me - and you can't remove it.

No envelope, no cash....you just add it on the slip they give you at the end.

Okey I going into dumb mode here I am still not understanding on how tip on a cruise.

2 Adults is going on a 3 day cruise

1 Adult pays $11.00 dollars tips for breakfeast
1 Adult pays $11.00 dollars tips for lunch
1 Adult pays 11.00 dollars tps for dinner

That only for day on the cruise in tips 33.00. If I am adding correctly that's 66.00 dollars in tips for 2 adults in one day.

Really lost me with that statement I not sure what mean by that statement.

Do someone have A Step By Step Guide to tipping on DCL because I am really not getting it.

I really need the Idiot's Guide to Tipping DCL.
 
For the 3 night cruise, per person:
Restaurant Server: $11.00
Assistant Server: $8.00
Head Server: $2.75
Staterooom Host(ess): $10.75

This means that for 2 people:
your tip for the WHOLE CRUISE for your dining room server would be $22.00.

Your tip for the Assistant server would be $16 for the whole cruise.

Your tip for the Head Server would be $5.50 for the cruise

and your tip for your Stateroom host/ess would be $21.50.

So, for 2 people, the TOTAL tips for and ENTIRE 3-day cruise would be $65.00 if you follow the guidelines.

The tips for the Servers are usually handed out during dinner on the last night of your cruise. You have the same servers for dinner every night, so you only tip them once at the end of the cruise.

The tip for your stateroom host/ess is usually given to them or left in your room for them sometime during the last full day of the cruise.
 
Wonder if anyone has ever slipped the Captain a tip.
