How does "renting points" work?

Please excuse the ignorance! I'm a non-DVC owner and I've been reading about "renting points" but haven't been able to find a thread (I'm sure it exists!) that describes exactly what this means and how the system works. Can someone direct me?

Go to the DVC Rent/Trade board here on the DISboards. There are sticky threads at the top of the board that explain how renting works and explain the posting rules for the Rent/Trade board. The thread that Doingitagain pointed you to is the sticky thread titled "Using the DVC Rent/Trade board. READ ME FIRST". Start with that and then move on to the Posting Rules sticky threads. If you have questions after reading through those threads, just come back here and post your questions. Don't post any questions on the Rent/Trade board however because that is just for "ads".

You really don't rent points. You actually rent a reservation made by the member using their points.
