We own a timeshare (NOT disney) and the chances of being able to trade to a Disney property are slim due to the fact that not many of you give up your time there! haha So now I'm looking at the possibility of buying a week from someone....

We're looking at some time after Thanksiving but before middle of Dec.
Not sure how all this works or how to go about it...can anyone fill me in??

late nov and dec are very popular at DVC (low pt costs to see the great wdw decorations.) you should try to find a renter around 11 months before your trip...and they will need to own at the resort you choose to stay at.

but definitely read this first:

Actually, you need to research and line up an owner to rent from a little prior to the opening of your 11-month window (which will be 11 months from your checkOUT day).

The description of that period being "very popular" doesn't begin to cover the frenzy for accommodations, and you're going to want your owner to be on the phone the morning of your window opening. If they call a day or two later, you may be out of luck.

Obviously, in order to be ready, you will have to establish the relationship some time ahead of your window opening.

Here's another thread, started by diznyfanatic, with a ton of very good info about renting from a variety of knowledgeable folks: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1255828

Also, be sure to go to the Rent/Trade board and read all of the "stickies" at the top of the board. There is a LOT of info on the stickies, but it's all important stuff.

Hmm, that's strange you all tell me that early DEC is a busy time to go. I've been 2x in the past (not to an onsite) the week after Thanksgiving and the parks were soooo quiet. I was able to sit on the rides 2-3 times before they kicked us off...no lines. So are you saying the DVC properties are just filled that time of year or have things changed in the past 4-5 yrs?

Also, Interval considers it low season as far as trades...so I'm confused.

THANKS!
Melanie

What's popular in the parks is not necessarly what is popular with DVC. Point cost are low during this time as well as the crowds making it a great time for DVC member to go. Also, Christmas decorations are up at this time which DVC members seem to enjoy.

Good luck with your quest.

You may want to also rethink trying to trade into DVC with your other time share. If it is a good trader through II we have had great success as long as you pick your time and be flexible. We have made 4 successful trades into DVC using ACs from II this year alone and not even using our real time share weeks including December of 2007, May 2008, October 2008 and now looking at November 2008. In fact there are one bed room OKW and SSRs available right now on II for ACs let alone real weeks for this October. If you can travel anytime in November or December 2009 and have a red week trader with II, I would think you could get at least a one bedroom at OKW or SSR. We have actually gotten 2 bedrooms mostly. :cool1:

Trust us. From November through New Years Eve is THE busiest time of the year for DVC! DVC peak times are not necessarily the same as WDW generally -- sometimes they coincide, sometimes they don't.

Many things Disney are like that. For example, September is a slow period generally, but good luck getting a dining ADR then. Why? Free DDP. Disney is constantly running promotions to try to level out the peaks and valleys, and they are pretty darn good at it.

Just t oclarify - the parks in early December are still quite slow compared to other times of the year.

DVC accomodations for that time of the year fill up very quickly - much faster than the summer or spring break months (which are busier times in the parks).

So if you want to rent points for that time of the year, you do need to start early if you want to stya in one of the smaller DVC resorts - VWL, BWV or BCV. It's not quite that bad for OKW & SSR, but the longer you wait to book, the less likely you are to get what you want.

Are you wanting Dec 2009? If you are wanting 2009 you are fine, You need to decide the resort you want, then find a owner that has that resort. It can be booked in Jan 09. It needs to be booked day by day. You have 2009 in your heading.

I'm "seconding" the fact that early December is one of the toughest times to book DVC -- that is partly because the points cost are low then. You will need to line up someone to rent to you, somewhat before 11 months from your check-in date.

I agree with this, too, except to add that you must own a high quality II trader to qualify for a DVC trade. About half the resorts in II are not high enough quality to be eligible for DVC trades. If your resort has high enough quality, you may not even need it to be a red (high season) week. I have traded into the DVC during low demand times of the year using high-quality yellow (mid-season) weeks.

Picabo, if you email or PM me, I can give you more information on trading into the DVC via II.

I was able to cancel my BCV one bdrm for Nov 30 to Dec 5 for a SSR one bdrm for Nov 30 to Dec 7th using a Marriott Platinum Studio. I actually had airfare booked for the original dates so my sil is going to stay from Dec 5-7th at SSR. I would have rather been in the BCV but I took what I could get and I saved 112 precious BCV points.

As far as the parks being crowded--They are empty. The DVC resorts are full because of the Member Christmas Party and the decorations around the Disney World Resort.

SSR is much easier to get than BCV as Marylyn shows.

Why not try to trade directly with an owner for what you have?

Good point Trading with a DVC member is always an option if she has a good enough week

Melanie, WaltsaGod brought a good point. Which timeshare and season do you own? If it is a Four Seasons, a Hyatt, a Hilton on the west coast of Florida, Hawaii, top of the line Westins, some Marriotts, then you have a good shot at getting a trade from a DVC member for your week.

Keep in mind many timeshares do not equate to Disney's timeshares in money invested, or maintenance fees. Therefore, you may need to trade your two bdrm for a studio or a one bedroom DVC, especially if you want the Boardwalk, Beach Club, Animal Kingdom or Villas at Wilderness Lodge Resorts.

We own a red week at a Gold Key property in Virginia Beach. So while it's not Florida or Hawaii, etc....it is red and their properties are always filled up far, far in advance. I guess what I could do is deposit my week with II now and then put in the request for with II?

Do you have a week in the summer in VA Beach? I don't think it will be enough for for a DVC resort if it is not prime time in VA Beach. Although those resorts are very popular they may not be spectacular traders unless they are in the prime summer weeks.

Marylyn...

The week in VA Bch is in Sept...guess it can't hurt to at least deposit my week with II and put some options on request for a DVC property. I don't have anything to loose!

thanks!

hey it is on the beach.

use II website and go look for yourself. dec, 2009 is much to earlier to be in their inventory (I think) - we have 2 years to exchange - but most members (like me) through it was 11 months (thanks Dean)

so not even expecting any to show up in Dec until april or may of next year.

so go look now and see what your trader will show you.

remember that DVC villa are generally only trader to II when members use them - so there will not be a great number of them - like Marriott, Sheraton, etc. - but if any show up. then you might be able to get Dec,2009.

look for Nov, Dec, Jan - now. (also Sept - there is always some in Sept) for this year.
