how does one get to be a grand marshal?

I was in WDW in Jan 2006 and we were at the MK for the afternoon parade and they announced the grand marshal of the parade (who they were and where they were from). Does anyone know how you get to be a grand marshal???

We got Chosen for MNSSHP Parade last year. We just happened to ask a question of the CM who selects the Grand Marshals. Of course they select a lot of people for the Party Parades so we got Lucky. I think it's a little harder for the regular 3PM parade. It seems to be people who are celebrated a special event who get chosen. Maybe other CM's arrange it upon hearing about special occassions from guests.

It is totally random. Just look happy to be in the parks and you increase your chances.

That was our 1st trip to WDW and if I tried to look any happier than I really was I think I would have spontaneously combusted.
