usually if i make a print it's to give to someone so i don'thave a large collection of prints butoccasionally i make a book of something like a vacation or my granddaughter so that would be "subject". chronologically means nothing to me so i'd have no idea what was in there if i did it by date.

I just recently started using Lightroom 2 to process pictures and since starting to use it I have been sorting by date (starting with a folder for the year, a month subfolder and then a subfolder for that days shots) by backing up to an EHD with the original RAW files. I then import into Lightroom and process those I want to keep and also backup the keepers into a separate folder (That folder is titled "processed photos" and is broken down by subject) on the external drive. I also back up to dvd the RAW files I consider keepers. I label the dvds by the month the pics on it were shot. I also numerically number the dvds as I fill them so they are easy to keep in order.

I keep mine in folders based on the the date the pictures were taken. I will sometimes add a description as well.. For example lets say I go to MK today. I would store all todays pics from MK in 20090420 Disney Magic Kingdom.

Then, I use Bridge to tag the images.

Keep in mind this is just my way. I am in no way saying this is the way you should do it. I think everyone finds a method they like and sticks with it. If it works for you great. Just keep it consistant.

thanks everyone!

here is my problem...how about older picts (before digital) that have been sorted chronologically but then the rest thrown in a box..what would you do???

I sort mine by event (location, whatever) and then date. Found that as I got older it was harder and harder to remember the dates of trips (such as 32 trips to WDW over 36 years) and a lot easier to remember the event. Look up the event and then they are listed by the date, whether scanned prints or digital images.
