How do you "rent" DVC points?

Can you use DME, DDP etc if you stay with rent points?

Rosie, I am sure this info is somewhere on the DVC board, but I'll tell you what I know!

You do NOT have to be a member to rent points. You find a member to rent from, and they make the ressie for you. You pay them a set $ amount per point (usually $10 - $12). They usually ask for at least half of the money at the time of reservation, and it may be entirely non-refunadable, so be sure of your plans!

You may use DME, the owner just has to call in your info.

You may add DDP, you pay it in full at check-in.

The only thing I can add is that I believe I was told that they recommend you add DDP 48 hours in advance.

Be very careful venturing into this sort of thing. I don't rent our points, but I have heard any number of unpleasant things from people who rented from DVC members.

Remember too, that as a point renter, you will be as if you were a DVC member, so you won't have daily housekeeping service.

There are any number of other issues to be aware of, so tread carefully.

As a renter, you are entirely at the mercy of the owner. The owner holds the ressie - if they cancel it and keep your money you are sort of stuck.

We don't rent out our points because we never have any left!

I've rented, but it was from someone we know. We just rented from them again, for our Disneymoon, and we're very happy. On the DVC board, they do have renters and I believe you can get references from them. If it were me, I'd go to the DVC board and start a thread, "Anyone renting points in the (your city) area?" You'll be surprised how many there are. That way you can meet them, in person. Hope that helps, good luck!

As others have mentioned, Renting a reservation from a DVC Member is a matter of trust for both parties. You trust the DVC Member to be upfront and not cancel the reservation, the DVC Member trusts you to not trash the room or leave an outstanding balance on the room account, and to pay in a timely manner.

Most rental transactions are considered a final transaction, while some DVC members will work with a the renter to reschedule, if need be. There should be a contract agreeable to both parties. Given the number of transactions on of DVC Rent/trade board, there have been very few problems, but there have been a few. Be sure to get contact info (address, cell phone, home phone, etc) of the member. If something doesn't "feel right" do not do business with that member.

I am just thinking about options for another trip in September with Tara. I bought an AP this year and I'd like to get the most out of it.

Do you have to stay on site? I know some folks do because of transportation, etc.

Often there are really reasonable villas for rent off site.
